General

  • Waterside Cumbrian retreat in the rural Eden Valley
  • Three miles from Kirkoswald; 30 minutes' drive to the Lake District
  • All pitches come with a firepit and picnic bench; coarse fishing lake

Established in 2021, High Hall Campsite gives you the opportunity to come and experience everything that makes Cumbria tick. Tucked away under the hills of the North Pennine fells and set deep in the gorgeous Eden Valley, this modern site is an excellent place to arrange a relaxed rural retreat.

The grounds here are divided by Croglin Beck, a scenic stream that meanders its way through the middle of the site. There are plenty of waterside views around and the wildlife is abundant: red squirrels, roe deer, barn owls and kingfishers could be among the creatures you spot. There are also farm animals to admire and a well-stocked coarse fishing lake that guests can use free of charge. (Please note that a catch-and-return fishing policy is in place.)

This Cumbrian campsite is fairly remote, but it's easy to drop by in Kirkoswald (three miles from base), an Eden Valley village with a hotel, pub, convenience store and ruined castle.

High Hall Campsite is located on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding National Beauty. This secluded site would also make a good base for day trips to the Lake District, as the national park is approximately 30 minutes away by road.

The owners were so very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. I loved meeting the cats and dogs on site. The showers were brilliant however, the only hot one I had after 5 days was the very last one before we went.

We loved the fact it was spacious and we had a bench and fire pit made the world of difference to our camping trip. Thank you!

    Disliked:

Whilst I took the compost toilets as they were, you did need a strong stomach for the smell and the lights only ever flickered on and went off. There weren't enough showers for the amount of people on the site if it was full and they were a bit of a trek up to them. After reading other reviews, we were looking forward to trying home made cakes and the likes in the vending machine but it was pretty empty over the week we were there.

Great Site! such lovely and spaced out pitches. It was bank holiday weekend and we expected it to be busy... but because they space the pitches out so much, it felt so lovely and relaxed. Perfect setting, great hosts and great break! will be returning for a much longer stay next summer.

Absolutely beautiful site, fantastic people, large pitches, family run. The family are on hand should you need anything. There is a lovely stream for the children to play in as well as a barn with so so many games. The barn also has a kitchen facility and a honesty corner with additional snacks etc. The showers were powerful with plugs for hairdryers etc should you need them (also one site one provided). We ventured to the Lake District twice. Once to do the infinity bridge at conisters slate mine and another to paddleboard on Windermere lake, both took approx an hour by car. Note we went south of the lake to fell foot.

Local attractions

There's a lot to see and do in the local area without venturing far: Kirkoswald Castle (10 minutes' drive) is well worth a visit, as are Lacy's Caves (15 minutes), a series of five sandstone chambers carved out by an eccentric 18th-century landowner. On a slightly grander scale, there are also ancient sites like Hadrian's Wall (20 minutes) and Birdoswald Roman Fort (35 minutes).

If you're Lakeland bound, start off in Pooley Bridge (30 minutes), a pretty little waterside town where you can catch the Ullswater steamer service to gorgeous Glenridding at the other end of the lake. The market town of Keswick (45 minutes) on the shores of Derwentwater is easily accessible too – head here for boat hire, to browse an array of independent shops or to visit the Derwent Pencil Museum and learn about the local graphite industry.

If you want to cover varied terrain, you're in the right place: this site is three miles down the road from the Coast to Coast cycle route (join at the bottom of Hartside Pass), and if you fancy dipping dipping your toe in the Yorkshire Dales it's easy to hop on the Settle to Carlisle railway 10 minutes down the road at Lazonby.

Must see

  • The Rheged Centre (18.6 kilometres)
  • Carlisle Castle (19.3 kilometres)
  • Dalemain Historic House & Gardens (21.0 kilometres)

  • Acorn Bank Garden and Watermill (18.4 kilometres)
