Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club Camping: Ruskins view- 5 minutes walk

General

  • Spacious and simple site in a 30-acre Cumbrian country park
  • Five minutes' walk to Kirkby Lonsdale for pubs, shops and a market
  • Walk to Ruskin's View for spectacular views across the Lune valley

Scrum down and stay in hilly splendour at Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club Camping. Fear not, you won't be woken by 15 burly blokes chasing a ball: the club makes its home in Underley Park, some 30 acres of lush nature between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District.

Art critic John Ruskin declared this region 'one of the loveliest views in England, therefore the world' when he saw the scenes painted of it by Turner: you'll likely not argue with that on your hikes around the surrounding land, especially to Ruskin's View: sky-high panoramas will be yours for the snapping, with views right across the Lune valley.

Hose your mucky self down back at base, where the club's showers and washrooms are well praised by visitors. And then to bed... with such a spacious site, there's plenty of room to pitch up and lose yourself in the Cumbrian countryside, even though it's only a five-minute walk from the centre of Kirkby Lonsdale.

Guests are welcome to use the players' gym for an extra fee.

Really nice quiet location with lovely views.

    Disliked:

Outside toilet block was absolutely filthy. Dead flies stick all up the walls. Excrement all over the toilets, including the seats. Looked like it hadn’t been cleaned for days. Inside toilets and showers were better. Also Hadn't been cleaned for a while. Advertised as a bar in the club house but that was closed for all 3 days of our visit.

Large pitch and good location for the town

    Disliked:

The path to the town has been closed off due to a landslide risk, so to walk to town its a bit more of a trek especially with little ones. Just be prepared

The staff on arrival was very friendly and informative, was given a leaflet with relevant information and contact numbers on. We set our tent up and realised we forgot our electric cable - which staff was more than happy to lend us a spare.
The toilets and shower blocks are very big and spacious, mostly clean just with a few muddy footprints on the floor which is to be expected whilst camping, we always take shower shoes so this doesn’t bother us at all.
The clubhouse is open most days with set hours and sky sports on the tv which was a huge bonus for my husband!!!
5 mins walk into the village where there is plenty of pubs, shops a playground and lots of beautiful sites to see.

Really liked this campsite lovely views and surrounding area. Nice woodland area to the back of the campsite and short walk into the local shops and pubs. The showers were in lockable Chang long rooms with toilets.

    Disliked:

It would be ideal if toilets had sanitary bins and mirrors.

Pitch size good and friendly helpful staff.
Hot showers and private, enough room to be able to shower as a family.
Approx 10 minute walk to the town.
Lots of space for children to run around.
    Fabulous views from the site.
Access to Wi-Fi although we didn't connect to this during our stay.

    Disliked:

Facilities not the cleanest! Some of the toilets were missing seats, and often blocked with build up of dirty paper and faecal matter.
Portable loos on site disgusting - somebody defecated in the urinal!

Beautiful views. The main shower blocks very spacious great if you have children with you. You have to let it run for a minute for it to get hotter. We could lock the door for privacy. There were 8 shower rooms each has 2 toilets in. Cleaned regular. Were on cleaning as we were leaving Saturday at 12. Didn't go in the bar. Enjoyed the pizza van. And had plenty space around the pitches and great for walking our 2 dogs. Site clean and tidy. We were there Monday to Saturday. There was a bit nose from some campers further down personally I never heard it. But there were asked to leave the following day by the site. The group in question did come round and apologise to everyone. Great atmosphere from everyone. The good mornings people having lunch and chatting to other campers. We were ele tric in our van and let us change from hardstanding to grass no problem and put our daughter and grandson in their tent non electric next to us. As I was the cook. Our grandson loved it playing with the other children. Met a lovely couple Barbara and Colin who brought treats every night for our 2 dogs they ate out our dogs were spoilt. You have to remember that when it rains and your going to the shower block yes the floor is going to get dirty off shoes etc. We left our shoes in a corner of the changing area. So we wouldn't muddy it. Bit common sense really. The village is lovely and we walked in every day to get cakes from Lunsdale Bakery omg the size of the cakes unreal. We popped into the Snooty FOX pub dog friendly massive beer garden. Also The Sun Hill pub dog friendly. We sat for lunch in the beer garden out the back of the Kingshead for lunch. Fab butchers in town. Farmers market on a Thursday we had food off the pizza stall and the hog roast. Walked the radical steps and to devils Bridge and walked the fields near our camp site. We will definately be back. Holiday is what you make it. If they sorted the portaloo area a bit better I understand you cannot be responsible for dirty customers.

    Disliked:

The portaloo. They were not cleaned from Monday till the Thursday you can tell by the dirt the flies around the seat the back bit. lack of hand towels. They were cleaned Friday and Saturday. The toilet properly would have been cleaner if some customers would have used the loo brush to clean away their shit stains. If you wouldn't do it at home and you would clean your mess why do it at a campsite. Some extra mirrors in the shower block would be great as not all had mirrors.

Local attractions

There's a bit of a scrum over Kirkby Lonsdale, with the Lakes, the Dales and even the Forest of Bowland all claiming the town as their gateway… and why not indeed…

There are many fine old inns among the 17th- and 18th-century houses of this handsome old market town, and visitors to the 11th-century church should find peace and reflection. With the river flowing right through, you're well placed to go fishing or paddle a canoe downstream; paths make for excellent easy riverside rambling too.

Head half an hour north and you'll hit Windermere. Take in the view, then take a walk: at the top of the lake, Ambleside (45 minutes' drive) is a hub for many paths up the high tarns and fells.

Clamouring for your attention to the east, the three peaks of the Yorkshire Dales are in easy reach, with Ingleborough closest (half an hour). If you don't fancy going up, head down to the fab caves instead. Meanwhile, armchair adventurers can settle in a comfy berth on the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway starting in, er, Settle (an hour's drive) or see the lakes from the decks of a steamer on Windermere.
