On a busy weekend

  • Spacious and simple site in a 30-acre Cumbrian country park
  • Five minutes' walk to Kirkby Lonsdale for pubs, shops and a market
  • Near Ruskin's View for spectacular views across the Lune valley
Scrum down and stay in hilly splendour at Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club Camping. Fear not, you won't be woken by 15 burly blokes chasing a ball: the club makes its home in Underley Park, some 30 acres of lush nature between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. Art critic John Ruskin declared this region 'one of the loveliest views in England, therefore the world' when he saw the scenes painted of it by Turner: sky-high panoramas will be yours for the snapping, with views right across the Lune valley, like nearby Ruskin's View. Hose your mucky self down back at base, where the club's showers and washrooms are well praised by visitors. And then to bed... with such a spacious site, there's plenty of room to pitch up and lose yourself in the Cumbrian countryside, even though it's only a five-minute walk from the centre of Kirkby Lonsdale. Guests are welcome to use the players' gym for an extra fee.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Great view of the hills from our pitch. Quite close to Kirkby Lonsdale but not the 5 minute walk as advertised.

Disliked The price is a bit steep for a very basic campsite, there are only 2 toilets and the shower was cold.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Friendliness of welcome- wardens seemed genuinely chuffed ( northern word) we were there.
Gorgeous views and quirky facilities- loved showering in a rugby changing room
Walkable into Kirkby longsdale which is a lovely place. Even have my favourite supermarket Booths
Very quiet and could hear birds sing

Disliked Bit of a trog to chemical disposal ( but maybe that’s cos it was raining so seemed a long way )
Duke of Edinburgh there so a lot of titivating and chatting going on in the toilets which was a tad irritating- perhaps a separate toilet could have been opened just for them?

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Friendly and informative host, a lovely pitch with a great view. Only a minute walk to the toilet up a flight of steps. Our two dogs loved the site too! Only a 10 minute walk into Kirkby Lonsdale, a lovely scenic place with plenty of pubs and restaurants. Thank you!

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Good location, nice views, friendly warden

Disliked Nowhere to dump grey waste (we were told just to unload it on the ground) and the elsan point was a VERY long walk away, with no vehicle access. There were two shower rooms available which were fine, but I don't know how this would work if so the pitches were full. The friendly warden did seem embarrassed about the lack of appropriate facilities saying 'well it is a rugby club' but it wouldn't be so disappointing if that was reflected in the fees. The charge was higher than the fully- serviced pitches elsewhere.

Local attractions

There's a bit of a scrum over Kirkby Lonsdale, with the Lakes, the Dales and even the Forest of Bowland all claiming the town as their gateway… and why not indeed… There are many fine old inns among the 17th- and 18th-century houses of this handsome old market town, and visitors to the 11th-century church should find peace and reflection. With the river flowing right through, you're well placed to go fishing or paddle a canoe downstream; paths make for excellent easy riverside rambling too. Head half an hour north and you'll hit Windermere. Take in the view, then take a walk: at the top of the lake, Ambleside (45 minutes' drive) is a hub for many paths up the high tarns and fells. Clamouring for your attention to the east, the three peaks of the Yorkshire Dales are in easy reach, with Ingleborough closest (half an hour). If you don't fancy going up, head down to the fab caves instead. Meanwhile, armchair adventurers can settle in a comfy berth on the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway starting in, er, Settle (an hour's drive) or see the lakes from the decks of a steamer on Windermere.
