  • Spacious and simple site in a 30-acre Cumbrian country park
  • Five minutes' walk to Kirkby Lonsdale for pubs, shops and a market
  • Walk to Ruskin's View for spectacular views across the Lune valley
Scrum down and stay in hilly splendour at Kirkby Lonsdale Rugby Club Camping. Fear not, you won't be woken by 15 burly blokes chasing a ball: the club makes its home in Underley Park, some 30 acres of lush nature between the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. Art critic John Ruskin declared this region 'one of the loveliest views in England, therefore the world' when he saw the scenes painted of it by Turner: you'll likely not argue with that on your hikes around the surrounding land, especially to Ruskin's View: sky-high panoramas will be yours for the snapping, with views right across the Lune valley. Hose your mucky self down back at base, where the club's showers and washrooms are well praised by visitors. And then to bed... with such a spacious site, there's plenty of room to pitch up and lose yourself in the Cumbrian countryside, even though it's only a five-minute walk from the centre of Kirkby Lonsdale. Guests are welcome to use the players' gym for an extra fee.

Liked: The amazing view.

Disliked: Only facilities were rugby club toilets; showers & changing room. No toilet seats; just bare pot toilets and these were also in use by the team training which were then left filthy. Smell of broken drains and only 1 water tap for the whole site. No warden & no security - you are just left in limbo. £30 per night is an absolute rip off for this site with only EHU.

Liked: The Views

Disliked: Facilities. Price. On the PitchUp website they claimed only 3 places left. The site was deserted when we arrived!! We hunted out a cleaner in the Rugby club who claimed the Camping season was supposed to be over. According to the PitchUp website it still had 5 days left. The rugby club changing room was our showers and toilet...communal arrangement and freezing! We had electrical hook up, as thankfully the electricity hadn't been cut off. We were charged £30 by PitchUp which was a rip off. £10 would have been too much! Look carefully at the reviews. The positive ones cannot be relied upon. Never again.

Liked: What a shamble’s this place is, we called ahead to say we would be 5 mins late 17:05 Voice mail stated that he was out of the country on the 31st of August. Went on there web site, found that it stated the site was closed from the 31st August We had booked a grass electric pitch only to find the only one available was in the middle of a friend’s, family pissup. It was only just passed 5pm. No way would they move for us . Am sure it states no groups , loud music, . It looked like they knew the owner had left and it was a free for all . We left and found another site just up the road .

Disliked: As above.

Local attractions

There's a bit of a scrum over Kirkby Lonsdale, with the Lakes, the Dales and even the Forest of Bowland all claiming the town as their gateway… and why not indeed… There are many fine old inns among the 17th- and 18th-century houses of this handsome old market town, and visitors to the 11th-century church should find peace and reflection. With the river flowing right through, you're well placed to go fishing or paddle a canoe downstream; paths make for excellent easy riverside rambling too. Head half an hour north and you'll hit Windermere. Take in the view, then take a walk: at the top of the lake, Ambleside (45 minutes' drive) is a hub for many paths up the high tarns and fells. Clamouring for your attention to the east, the three peaks of the Yorkshire Dales are in easy reach, with Ingleborough closest (half an hour). If you don't fancy going up, head down to the fab caves instead. Meanwhile, armchair adventurers can settle in a comfy berth on the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway starting in, er, Settle (an hour's drive) or see the lakes from the decks of a steamer on Windermere.
