Low Hollows: Low Hollows farmhouse

General

  • Lake District pop-up site in the foothills of Blencathra
  • Keswick, Skiddaw and Helvellyn all within a 10-minute drive
  • Simple, spacious pitches with a stream for paddling

The owners of Low Hollows reckon they’ve got one of the most stunning locations in the Lake District… and it’s easy to see why they love it. This Cumbria pop-up site is in the foothills of Blencathra, so it’s a scenic place, and it’s easy to get to as well – just a little way off the A66.

That handy position means that it’s easy to get to the village of Threlkeld, a mile away, for two excellent pubs and a coffee shop – or continue on to the bigger market town of Keswick, less than 10 minutes’ drive away. The Keswick to Penrith bus route stops in the village too, so you can get out and about easily without taking the car.

And where might your outings take you? Well, it’s all about the open air around here: climbing, horse riding, canoeing and shooting are all within five miles, and there’s a golf course less than a mile away. Cyclists can head out on the C2C (Coast to Coast) route from the village, while walkers take strolls along the Keswick to Threlkeld railway line path. More intrepid types can tick off several Lakeland fells nearby, including Skiddaw and Helvellyn as well as Blencathra.

Sounds rather like you’ll need time to chill out back on site – and handily there’s plenty of space for that, plus a stream for soothing tired feet. Barbecues are permitted on the pitches, and you’re welcome to bring dogs and kids (there’s a whole lot of field for them to scamper about in). Facilities are on the low-key side, with just showers and toilets (two of each for the ladies and gents) and a washing-up area.

Booked into Low Hollows for 3 nights with my two sons for a much needed break.
The sheer amount of space in the fields was great so we weren't crammed close to other tents and it was really quiet. The facilities were fine, shower block, pot washing area and outside water taps.
The views from the campsite were stunning. We don't camp very often, but this was the best camping trip we've had.

    Disliked:

There was nothing to dislike. The site had everything we needed. If we had wanted luxury facilities, we would have stayed in a hotel

Excellent location and ample space spread over four fields. Most of the pitches were on a slope, but I managed to find a nice flat pitch.

    Disliked:

Facilities were clean, but basic, with insufficient toilet and dish washing spaces for the number of pitches available, but this is a developing site, so their is scope for improvement

Me and my partner were in desperate need of some time away however, due to Covid, we had a tighter budget than usual. Low Hollows was priced well and the location was ideal. It is a 10 minute drive to Keswick meaning that you are far enough out that you aren’t constantly surrounded by other tourists but close enough that you can drive anywhere in the lakes with ease. The site was large and there was plenty of space for pitches so you never felt like you were too close to other campers. For the price that we paid, you can’t really go wrong.

    Disliked:

    - Whilst there are toilets, showers and washing up facilities, there are only 2 showers and 2 toilets for the men and 2 showers and 2 toilets for the women. This meant that sometimes you could be waiting a while to use the facilities, which were often quite dirty (this is unpleasant anyway especially whilst we are still in the pandemic).

    - The campsite is directly off the A66 which is convenient for travel however the road noise was quite loud at night.

    - We never met the owner and there were no specific instructions as to where to pitch the tent. As camping newbies this maybe something that doesn’t phase more experienced campers however I thought it was something to note.
