General

  • Family-friendly site in scenic countryside surroundings
  • Easy access to fields – barbecues and campfires encouraged
  • Traditional camping experience on the fringes of Hebden Bridge

Mad about walking? Then you’d be silly to miss out on Aarons Campsite – the Cragg Vale location, between Halifax and Hebden Bridge, is right in the heart of the lush green Pennines, where heading out for a wander can turn into a full-blown hike that ranks up there with the best of them.

The secluded family-friendly site, in an area of moors and fields, is within easy reach of local attractions such as the popular tourist area Hebden Bridge. The surrounding hills and valleys (including Stoodley Pike) have been popular with trekking types for yonks too, whether for strolling along a riverside path, or for following stone causeways marking old packhorse routes; there's great dog walking terrain in all directions.

It’s all about nicely simple stays here, but just have a chat with the staff and they’ll provide you with portable firepits and wood for your campfire (for a small extra charge) – they also have a larger fixed campfire available for group hire. The easily accessible fields are flat and drained.

If you’re out of nosh or fancy leaving the cooking to someone else one evening, shops and takeaways are within a mile and a half of the site, as well as two village pubs. But if you’re out in the car on a food mission, be sure to grab some for the barbecue and invite some of your newfound friends over for a toasty evening meal.

Very basic but friendly and lovey and quiet.26/03/2020

Quirky, spread over several small fields, very basic facilities but enough. Very friendly and amenable owner, came and chatted with us for over an hour round the campfire. Almost no electric/street lighting anywhere so nights are properly dark and starscapes are stunning. Very few cars or people about - perfect if you want to get away from the rat race for a few days and enjoy some peace and tranquility. Definitely some wild life about during the night - pinched our bread lol!!!

    Disliked:

Fire pits provided (for hire) are tiny and simply not fit for purpose. We took our own wood and used the communal firepit which worked a treat. No shower which isn't a problem for a couple of nights but would make a nice addition to facilities.

Loved the location, though a little exposed, it had beautiful views. Enjoyed being able to have a camp fire, which we needed on a chilly September evening.

    Disliked:

Toilet for facilities were grim in terms of hygiene and by the second evening had no running water in the gents facility. Whilst we were not expecting glamping, we were not planning to get quite so "back to basics"

From the manager...

We offer a back to basics camping experience with the luxury of flush toilets. However in the unlikely event of a power cut or pump failure we do our best to sort the issue as soon as possible and provide buckets for flushing as a temporary measure.

The location was nice and rural but close enough to a shop if you needed to get one. The toilet facilities were clean. The staff we met (Aaron and a young lad delivering the firewood) were both really pleasant, especially the young man. The tent pitches on the left in the little forest clearing were adorable. Good firepit facilities.

    Disliked:

We weren't staying for a long time but if you were, there are no showering facilities which would be an issue if you were staying more than a night or two. There was lots of bin facilities including recycling but all of them were incredibly full, needed a good clear out.

From the manager...

The field is lonely when empty and the toilets are in shacks in the woods.

Local attractions

Cragg Vale, a 10-minute drive away, is a top spot to delve into local history and is crammed with independent shops for souvenirs and wallet emptying, from antiques and secondhand books to handmade quality crafts.

There's more shopping, along with Victorian streets and a hillside setting at Hebden Bridge (20 minutes), frequently hailed as one of the best market towns in the UK and Europe. Check out the town events when you're here too, as Hebden Bridge is home to an acclaimed arts festival and the famed Handmade Parade.

Hikers can ramble around all sorts of walking havens from here, with the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland both within an hour's drive for weeks' worth of contented tramping about. Or have a highly energetic time closer to home with a clamber up to Stoodley Pike, commemorating the Battle of Waterloo. There are splendid views of green countryside from here, so bring your camera.

Brontë buffs might also want to check out the ruined farmhouse Top Withens (45 minutes), said to have been the inspiration for the Earnshaw home in Wuthering Heights. The surrounding moors are sure to have you searching for the nearest bookshop, or perhaps bawling out a certain Kate Bush song from the 70s...
