General

  • Family-friendly site in scenic countryside surroundings
  • Easy access to fields – barbecues and campfires encouraged
  • Traditional camping experience on the fringes of Hebden Bridge

Mad about walking? Then you’d be silly to miss out on Aarons Campsite – the Cragg Vale location, between Halifax and Hebden Bridge, is right in the heart of the lush green Pennines, where heading out for a wander can turn into a full-blown hike that ranks up there with the best of them.

The secluded family-friendly site, in an area of moors and fields, is within easy reach of local attractions such as the popular tourist area Hebden Bridge. The surrounding hills and valleys (including Stoodley Pike) have been popular with trekking types for yonks too, whether for strolling along a riverside path, or for following stone causeways marking old packhorse routes; there's great dog walking terrain in all directions.

It’s all about nicely simple stays here, but just have a chat with the staff and they’ll provide you with portable firepits and wood for your campfire (for a small extra charge) – they also have a larger fixed campfire available for group hire. The easily accessible fields are flat and drained.

If you’re out of nosh or fancy leaving the cooking to someone else one evening, shops and takeaways are within a mile and a half of the site, as well as two village pubs. But if you’re out in the car on a food mission, be sure to grab some for the barbecue and invite some of your newfound friends over for a toasty evening meal.

Back to basics campsite, which allows campfires! Within about a 20 minute walk of a village which has a shop and a few pubs. The owner was extremely friendly.

Friendly staff upon check-in and leaving. Site is ok although quite a few parties packed into what is a relatively small field. Easy to hire campfires and wood. Cheap and cheerful.

    Disliked:

As with other reviews inconsiderate campers. Loud heavy metal music on until the early hours with no action taken from site staff. Avoided portable w/c after first usage as no toilet roll, much better to use proper toilets in the woods.

We were there over the August bank holiday, so expected it to be busy, and it was, but we still managed to find a spot in the front field with an impressive view which didn't feel too hemmed in and there was enough room for everyone to spread out. The shop is great and really useful when you arrive late at night with a chocolate craving. Very friendly staff. The second night we were the only people in the field and the owner came over a chat. He's a really interesting and friendly bloke and writes poetry and wotnots.

As the campsite is high up on the hill, you can see for miles and watch the epic weather coming and going over the hills. The lights from the towns below were bright but spectacular and not enough to blot out the stars. Amplified music is not allowed in the front field, which was good, as it kept it peaceful enough despite the bank holiday numbers of people. Dogs are allowed, and so are fires in firepits, which was ideal for us.

Really handy for Hebden Bridge and round that way if you've got a bike/car. There is lovely walking straight out of the campsite through the quarry and little millenium sculpture garden.

It's a good, basic site if you don't do those big commercial sites. Loos are in portacabins. Nothing fancy. My star ratings are based on this being advertised as a basic site. Will definitely go back if staying in that area again.

    Disliked:

Recycling could be better organised and separated - people just dumped all their rubbish into one bin. At the end of the busy weekend the bins were overflowing. It's amazing what some people throw away...

Friendly camp site manager and lovely location. Easy to find and good quality, clean field as well as very clean portaloo.

    Disliked:

Totally inconsiderate fellow campers. Two groups were talking loudly, including using a lot of swear words, and playing music until at least 1.30am. I didn't manage to get any sleep until about 3am.

Local attractions

Cragg Vale, a 10-minute drive away, is a top spot to delve into local history and is crammed with independent shops for souvenirs and wallet emptying, from antiques and secondhand books to handmade quality crafts.

There's more shopping, along with Victorian streets and a hillside setting at Hebden Bridge (20 minutes), frequently hailed as one of the best market towns in the UK and Europe. Check out the town events when you're here too, as Hebden Bridge is home to an acclaimed arts festival and the famed Handmade Parade.

Hikers can ramble around all sorts of walking havens from here, with the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland both within an hour's drive for weeks' worth of contented tramping about. Or have a highly energetic time closer to home with a clamber up to Stoodley Pike, commemorating the Battle of Waterloo. There are splendid views of green countryside from here, so bring your camera.

Brontë buffs might also want to check out the ruined farmhouse Top Withens (45 minutes), said to have been the inspiration for the Earnshaw home in Wuthering Heights. The surrounding moors are sure to have you searching for the nearest bookshop, or perhaps bawling out a certain Kate Bush song from the 70s...

Must see

  • Eureka! The National Children's Museum (7.6 kilometres)
  • Halifax Ski & Snowboard Centre (7.9 kilometres)
