General

  • Family-friendly site in scenic countryside surroundings
  • Pubs five minutes' drive away; portable firepits on site for barbecues
  • Traditional camping experience on the fringes of Hebden Bridge

Mad about walking? Then you’d be silly to miss out on Aarons Campsite – the Cragg Vale location, between Halifax and Hebden Bridge, is right in the heart of the lush green Pennines, where heading out for a wander can turn into a full-blown hike that ranks up there with the best of them.

The secluded family-friendly site, in an area of moors and fields, is within easy reach of local attractions such as the popular tourist area Hebden Bridge. The surrounding hills and valleys (including Stoodley Pike) have been popular with trekking types for yonks too, whether for strolling along a riverside path, or for following stone causeways marking old packhorse routes; there's great dog walking terrain in all directions.

It’s all about nice simple stays in basic and easily accessible fields here, but just have a chat with the staff and they’ll provide you with portable firepits and wood for your campfire (for a small extra charge) – they also have a larger fixed campfire available for group hire.

If you’re out of food or fancy leaving the cooking to someone else one evening, shops and takeaways are within a mile and a half of the site, as well as two village pubs. But if you’re out in the car on a food mission, be sure to grab some for the barbecue and invite some of your newfound friends over for a toasty evening meal.

We loved the tidiness of the campsite and ease of access. We enjoyed the ‘no luxury’ camping. Purely beautiful views & fields. Friendly staff. This was our second visit this month. We will definitely return.

There were two fields to use which made enough space to find an area we liked as we had two dogs so we could tuck ourselves away in a corner. The ground was quite soft in some places which was good for putting up the tent. Bins were within a close walking distance and fitepits with coal were given to each tent if required.

    Disliked:

As I didn't see the option to book in my 2 dogs when making the booking online I checked them in on arrival, but was charged more than mentioned on pitchup.

loved the relaxing atmosphere and friendly welcome on the site. It is a very basic site but the views make up for that, we stayed on the field infront of the buildings. The toilets were always clean and there were some portaloos on site which were also immaculate. Will return.

    Disliked:

Nothing - but if camping in the wetter colder weather a shower facility would be nice on site.
Children playing unsupervised in the wooded area around the facilities were noisy and unruly - I think they were staying in the field behind.

Local attractions

Cragg Vale, a 10-minute drive away, is a top spot to delve into local history and is crammed with independent shops for souvenirs and wallet emptying, from antiques and secondhand books to handmade quality crafts.

There's more shopping, along with Victorian streets and a hillside setting at Hebden Bridge (20 minutes), frequently hailed as one of the best market towns in the UK and Europe. Check out the town events when you're here too, as Hebden Bridge is home to an acclaimed arts festival and the famed Handmade Parade.

Hikers can ramble around all sorts of walking havens from here, with the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland both within an hour's drive for weeks' worth of contented tramping about. Or have a highly energetic time closer to home with a clamber up to Stoodley Pike, commemorating the Battle of Waterloo. There are splendid views of green countryside from here, so bring your camera.

Brontë buffs might also want to check out the ruined farmhouse Top Withens (45 minutes), said to have been the inspiration for the Earnshaw home in Wuthering Heights. The surrounding moors are sure to have you searching for the nearest bookshop, or perhaps bawling out a certain Kate Bush song from the 70s...
