  • Peaceful site on a 60-acre farm on the banks of the River Ouse
  • A 20-minute drive or 40-minute quiet bike ride from York
  • Three great village pubs within a 10-minute drive
A rural riverside stay on the banks of the Ouse – ooh, yes please… North Yorkshire site Hales Hill Park has a splendid 650 metres of river frontage as part of its 60-acre farm seven miles from York. With that waterside setting comes a fine spot in which to settle for a bit of birdwatching or coarse fishing (seek permission from the owners before getting your kit in place), or just to set up a deckchair, pour a drink and admire some classic country views. There’s easy access to public footpaths and bike trails too if you’d like to get out and survey your surrounds – stick to the rural lanes or pedal over to the National Cycle Network Route 65 to get up to York in 40 minutes or so (or drive it in 20 minutes if you’re a tad wobbly on two wheels). Sixty acres gives the owners plenty of space to play with, so they’ve kindly allocated a decent chunk of it to their guests – which means scope for kids to play games, for dogs to bound around and for folk to safely set up barbecues or campfires for alfresco evenings. Rather than encroach on the peaceful space, the team here have kept facilities simple, just installing showers, toilets and an area for dealing with rubbish and waste disposal. North Yorkshire not treating you to alfresco eating weather? Take your pick from any of the three country pubs within a 10-minute drive – the folk here give thumbs up to each and every one of them.

What customers say

This farm campsite offers a peaceful rural setting with spacious, flat pitches and clean facilities. Guests praised the friendly staff, especially at the on-site bar, and its convenient location for exploring York. While many enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, some visitors noted issues with the cleanliness and number of toilet/shower facilities, particularly during busy periods. The entrance road can be bumpy.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The sunrise in the morning was really nice. The pitch itself was ok.
The toilets near the main entrance were clean and the shower was hot.

Disliked We arrived in the afternoon to a reception of no one. Although after being pointed to a sign by another camper that explained that you basically camp anywhere. We were still unsure of where to camp. We just parked up near another van in the hope that it was in the right place.

Liked Me and my partner arrived here yesterday to be pleasantly surprised the the welcome we received from such lovely kind helpful people the ran the ski club. Carl, Jason and Jeanette could not have been more helpful and polite . They even pulled all the stops out and took us on a boat ride. What an amazing experience. Also introduced us to all the local sites that we would have never found
Highly recommend and these guys are that great me and the wife have already started boat shopping. 😋 Ready to return in few weeks
See you guys soon .
And thankyou once again

Electric grass pitch

Liked We liked the open space. The lady in the bar who chatted to us that was working in there.

Disliked The price! £35 a night, for what? Yes we had EHU but the site had no other amenities apart from a rough shower/toilet block & a wooden club house, that wouldn’t be out of place at ‘Eden Camp’ with zero atmosphere. In high season, yes we are happy to pay that, but when we arrived we had no one to greet us & had to figure out where to pitch up. Anyone could turn up & hook up! Reception was shut the whole time we were there, not a soul on site. And to top it off while taking our dogs for a walk along the dirt track, we were spoken to by a women in a white car in an extremely rude manner. She was so angry telling us that she owned the road, along with her son, which lead to the campsite. It was the only road in & out. She took great offence that our dog was off lead. There was literally no one around, so they wasn’t bothering anyone, & well behaved. After a few words we walked on (dogs back on lead) to which she came back in her car to have another go! Was absolutely disgusting the way she spoke to us. Totally rude. After note, there is nothing around. If you want any civilisation be prepared to walk miles!

Liked Booked a 3 night stay & did an extra night not wanting to leave. A lovely farm site. Very peaceful with large, tidy fields & clean amenities. Bangin' shower. Great night in the bar with Jeanette & Jason. Lovely 20 minute drive into York. Wouldn't hesitate to book again.

Liked We stayed with our caravan for the weekend and we will definitely come back. It’s a lovely quiet site, the toilets and showers was clean. The ski club was so friendly and welcoming. They let us take take rides on their boats which my little girl absolutely loved. They was also friendly when we went to the bar the ski club took time to come speak to us and make us feel so welcome. It’s because of the ski club that we will be back as we thoroughly enjoyed our selves

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely little find. Nice and relaxed on the side of a river. We only stayed for 1 night but would love to go back and explore more nearby. The onsite bar was a great addition which was very warm and welcoming by the lady behind the bar and even went out of her way to sort a bowl of water out for our dogs.

Disliked The road up to the site is a little run down and bumper but fine if you take care.

Local attractions

You’ll be wanting a trip to York, yes? Or perhaps several, given how much there is to see and do around the place, and the fact that it’s only a 20-minute drive away. Start by getting to grips with the area’s history by taking a walk around the old city walls, visiting the castle and minster and checking out the exhibits at the Jorvik Viking Centre and Yorkshire Museum. Those fascinated by things that move will certainly want to make a stop at the city’s excellent National Railway Museum; sweet-toothed types will no doubt find themselves drawn more to the tempting aromas that waft out of York’s Chocolate Story. And when it's time for a pint? It’s said there are 365 pubs within the city walls… Take a break from city wandering with a day out cheering on the gee-gees at York Racecourse (15 minutes’ drive), admiring the landscaping at Stillingfleet Lodge Gardens (25 minutes) or meeting the menagerie at Askham Bryan Wildlife & Conservation Park (15 minutes).
