A rural riverside stay on the banks of the Ouse – ooh, yes please… North Yorkshire site Hales Hill Park has a splendid 650 metres of river frontage as part of its 60-acre farm seven miles from York. With that waterside setting comes a fine spot in which to settle for a bit of birdwatching or coarse fishing (seek permission from the owners before getting your kit in place), or just to set up a deckchair, pour a drink and admire some classic country views. There’s easy access to public footpaths and bike trails too if you’d like to get out and survey your surrounds – stick to the rural lanes or pedal over to the National Cycle Network Route 65 to get up to York in 40 minutes or so (or drive it in 20 minutes if you’re a tad wobbly on two wheels). Sixty acres gives the owners plenty of space to play with, so they’ve kindly allocated a decent chunk of it to their guests – which means scope for kids to play games, for dogs to bound around and for folk to safely set up barbecues or campfires for alfresco evenings. Rather than encroach on the peaceful space, the team here have kept facilities simple, just installing showers, toilets and an area for dealing with rubbish and waste disposal. North Yorkshire not treating you to alfresco eating weather? Take your pick from any of the three country pubs within a 10-minute drive – the folk here give thumbs up to each and every one of them.

Liked The site was really peaceful, clean showers and loos and a warm welcome at the club house. Also enjoyed the walk along the the river to nearby village and pub plus lots of birds of prey including kites spotted as well as hares in the fields.

Liked Great pitch with easy access and smooth self-check-in! Shower and washbasin areas were clean. Took a minute to find the Wi-Fi code by the sinks, but the connection was smooth once logged in. Beautiful scenery and stunning stargazing at night!

Liked Lovely clean quiet site facilities good very clean and easy to use

Disliked The canal walk and bike path was overgrown and in parts inaccessible the approach lane needs cutting each side but we look forward to going back again

Liked The ease of everything from arriving to leaving. We set up pitch quite late around 7pm, but the clubhouse was very helpful as we forgot our fire pit but after asking they went out there way to have a look if there was any available and provided us one with a bag of logs too for a small charge which kept us going all night.

Very chilled out campsite with decent shower block facilities and great access to the river if that’s what your there to do.

Will return👍🏼

Liked Really nice stay, even better because of the bar and the people who ran the bar were so welcoming and made our stay very enjoyable.
Wouldn’t quite have the same vibe without that.

Large flat areas

Disliked People who have no respect for others like running a vehicle engine until well after 11pm, children banging on vehicle windows and two yapping dogs.
Parents allowing their children to be noisy and playing on the park at 07:15

Liked Laidback nature of if nice and clean facilities organic free range eegs direct from the farmer.
Plenty of fish in the river just meters away from the camp.
Lovely onsite pub. Plenty of walks.
Loved to see a local water ski club in action. You can try it for a fee if you dare.!

Disliked Local power cuts caused lack of water. Shame on energy companies.
Access road was really bad but once mentioned to the farmer hi attack it with his bulldozer and it become even better than the main roads in Yorkshire.

Liked We love coming back to this site and always have a good stay. It's self check in and the details are easy enough to follow with staff around if you need any help with anything. The small bar is great in the evening and even had a singer on over the bank holiday. As always the staff in the bar cannot do enough for you and are really friendly.
The location so close to york centre is perfect for trips. There is also a small village a 10 min drive that has a fish shop and corner shop.
Wifi on site can be hit and miss due to location, but that doesn't bother us as our children just love to spend time in the play area or football pitch.

Disliked My only slight dislike, but it's not enough of a dislike to stop us booking again is the toilets/showers. There are only 2 of each for the site, so when busy there is often a queue and can get quite muddy/wet on the floor. But again only a slight niggle. We have stayed several times and will again.
