  • Spacious adults-only Yorkshire site with easy access from the A64
  • A 20-minute drive from central York and 45 minutes from the coast
  • Eco-friendly site with a nature trail and nest box webcams
Gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside all around, handy access to the A64 and York a mere 20 minutes’ drive down the road… there’s no denying Flaxton Meadows is in a very fine setting indeed. And it has a good mix of rural views too – this is a site that has farmland on one side and the wildlife-packed Strensall Common heathland on the other. And that means plenty of options for cyclists and walkers, whether you’re into strolling on local paths or tackling longer outings on the likes of the Ebor Way or Yorkshire Wolds Way. Don’t know where to start? The team on site are on hand to offer advice. As well as day trips to York, they also frequently recommend outings to Castle Howard and Scarborough. Being rather proud of their area, the owners here have put in a lot of effort to make their place eco friendly, kitting it out with renewable energy sources, establishing wildlife areas and using sustainable building materials where possible. A nature trail and educational boards help guests to get to know the area and nest-box webcams give everyone the chance to get a closer look at what’s rustling in the trees.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Great site, friendly staff, nice little pub, pizzas and bacon sarnies

Disliked A bit annoying having a shower in the dark after 5minutes, ok I like a long shower .
The resident guy in plot 21 is really annoying with his really loud face time phone calls which went on and on and on 🥴

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Clean site with spacious pitches and water tap on each of the touring pitches.
Excellent toilet and shower block with other facilities such as washing machine.
Nice bar on site and pizza van (although we didn't try the food).

Disliked The on-site bar closed early on Thursday night but we were told it would be open later at the weekend. Saturday night, despite plenty of customers and the sign with opening times stating closimg at 10.30pm, last orders were called at 9.30pm. When we asked why they were closing early, we were just told it's closing time. We referred them to the sign and simply got a shrug from the barmaid who pointed to the manager. The manager and barmaid were clearly more interested in flirting with each other. (The same manager was flirting with the (different) barmaid on Thursday too). Not to worry, we went back to the van and saved our money. Didn't go in the following night either. Shame as the owner has clearly invested a lot of money in this facility but obviously doesn't realise it's not being utilised to its full potential. Especially as there's nothing else nearby meaning they have a captive audience.

Whilst a lovely site, you need a car to get around. There are no walks nearby or any other facilities. It is next to a quite busy 60mph road (with no footpath), and the nearby rail line has a manually operated level crossing, meaning the frequent trains are required to sound their very loud horns from about 7.30am and throughout the day.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re pleased to hear that you enjoyed several aspects of your visit to our site.

We would, however, like to clarify a few points raised in your feedback. Contrary to your comment, the bar does not close at 9:30pm. Last orders are called at 9:30pm, and the bar officially closes at 10pm. This arrangement is in place out of respect for our neighbouring landowners, specifically due to the racehorses located nearby, and is part of a long-standing gentleman’s agreement with both them and the parish council to support the smooth continuation of our planning permissions.

Regarding your mention of a “manager” being present, there was no manager on duty during your stay—only a member of staff. We also find your suggestion of unprofessional behaviour between staff members to be unfounded and inappropriate. Additionally, your assumption about the staff member’s personal preferences is baseless and unwelcome and could be classed as harmful to our member of staff !

You are correct in noting the significant investment we have made in the site, which is why we were surprised by your claim that there are no local walks. In fact, we have a detailed booklet in the bar listing over 30 walks in the area. Had you asked, our staff would have provided a leaflet or offered guidance.

With regard to the surrounding roads, while there is no designated footpath, like much of rural Britain, there is a 3-metre verge on either side deemed safe for walking. We acknowledge the lane has a speed limit of 60mph, though traffic is generally light.

As for train noise, it is minimal and limited to local services between York and Scarborough, which run infrequently and are rarely considered a disturbance.

It seems that our campsite may not be aligned with your expectations. We appreciate your feedback, but in light of your overall dissatisfaction, we kindly ask that you do not return in the future.

Kind regards,
Reverend and Dr Jonathan Charters-Reid

Mitchell's Field electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Really friendly site. Owner and staff made you feel very welcome. The toilet and shower block was excellent. Never crowded and very tidy. Hair dryers available as well, which was a bonus. Bar was great. Fair prices and lovely atmosphere. The whole site was clean and tidy. There's a dog wash facility and good washing up area for pots and pans. It's a lovely little campsite and it wasn't too noisy in the evening even though it is adults only.

Disliked I wish there was an option to have a non electric pitch away from others. We had to share an electric point with two other tents which made us very close in proximity as you were huddled around on four sides. Whilst this was okay, it wasn't ideal especially since I didn't really need the electric site at all. There's plenty of room (or was when we were there) for you to pitch further up the field away from other sites and be without electric. I would have been happy paying the same price without the electric. I'd still give it 10/10 though as it was a great place! Just something for the owners to consider.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Brilliant place . We stayed a week in our caravan and didn't want to leave. Facilities are excellent and the bar is reasonably priced. It's the most we have used an onsite bar. Being adult only was an other bonus. Easy access to York via park and ride which is a ten minute drive away. Every staff member we met were excellent. Without hesitation we would return.

Disliked A little isolated. Would have been nice to walk into a village but this is only a minor dislike as we had a car so could tour about the area.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Fabulous happy staff, lovely clean site, fantastic amount of wildlife, close enough to shops etc but perfect for a quiet get away. Lovely to have a manly adult site with a bar and food facilities to hand.

Disliked Nothing to do with the site but the drunk loud campers that came on the Friday night and chose to drink and be extremely foul mouthed then the lady urinate outside right near the toilets. Disgusting behaviour

Mitchell's Field electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great facilities; spacious, clean and warm. Really friendly staff, and a nice little campsite bar. There's a nature walk around the perimeter, and loads of wildlife to see. Any noise issues "after hours" were dealt with quickly and efficiently.
So good we extended our stay an extra night!

Disliked The wifi doesnt reach the tent field (and that's not noted in the description); its clear the owner has made massive investments in the site, so hopefully they will install some wifi extenders soon.

The next two are beyond the campsite's control (so I haven't marked down for this) but its worth flagging to make people aware:
- there is noise from passing cars (fast) and trains (blowing horns from 7:30am)
- its very close to a military training range, so there were guns shooting from 9-3:30 during the week.
It didn't spoil things for us, but we have a noise sensitive dog who was a little unsure.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a great review. We are delighted you enjoyed staying with us, and also that you extended your stay.

We note your comments regarding the wifi, and also the noise outside the site.

We hope we can welcome you back very soon.

Local attractions

Starting your explores of the local area is as simple as wandering next door to Strensall Common, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and with plenty of paths to wander along (some of them accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs). York (20 minutes) is a must, of course – for history at the Jorvik Viking Centre, walks along the old walls and visits to the National Railway Museum. For more on the heritage front, next stops should certainly be Castle Howard (15 minutes), Nunnington Hall (25 minutes) and Rievaulx Abbey (35 minutes). There's a Go Ape adventure park at Dalby Forest (35 minutes) for an active day out. And there’s always the prospect of a trip to the coast at Filey (45 minutes) or Scarborough (50 minutes)… Can’t make your mind up? The team here has assembled a collection of podcasts to give you a flavour of some of the options and help you make your decisions.
