  • Spacious adults-only Yorkshire site with easy access from the A64
  • A 20-minute drive from central York and 45 minutes from the coast
  • On-site bar and pizza trailer; eco-friendly site with a nature trail
Gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside all around, handy access to the A64 and York a mere 20 minutes’ drive down the road… there’s no denying Flaxton Meadows is in a very fine setting indeed. Food and drinks are also fairly easy to come by here; it has an on-site bar, Champers for Campers, and freshly made pizza is available to buy from a pizza airstream, G Papa J's Pizza. And the site has a good mix of rural views too – it has farmland on one side and the wildlife-packed Strensall Common heathland on the other. And that means plenty of options for cyclists and walkers, whether you’re into strolling on local paths or tackling longer outings on the likes of the Ebor Way or Yorkshire Wolds Way. Don’t know where to start? The team on site are on hand to offer advice. As well as day trips to York, they also frequently recommend outings to Castle Howard and Scarborough. Being rather proud of their area, the owners have put in a lot of effort to make their place eco-friendly, kitting it out with renewable energy sources, establishing wildlife areas and using sustainable building materials where possible. A nature trail and educational boards help guests to get to know the area and nest-box webcams give everyone the chance to get a closer look at what’s rustling in the trees.

What customers say

Top spot for adults only. Spotless facilities (underfloor heating!), spacious pitches, and friendly staff get rave reviews. On-site bar & pizza van a hit. Great base for York, though you'll need a car for local shops. Occasional Wi-Fi glitches.

Mitchell's Field powered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Great site, fabulous facilities. Staff were super helpful

Disliked Only complaint is it's quite noisy from a train line nearby. Not the site's fault of course, but did disrupt our sleep a little

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site

Liked Pitch size was nice and easy to get to.
Nice dog walk from pitch around the perimeter of the site and a common that was close by.
Men’s Showers were great.

Disliked The night we planned for a pizza from the site we got a reply .. As there was not many people on site today , no pizzas tonight! A sign to say that during the day would have been nice.
Woman’s showers were not working for a few days , but after telling staff they told us that my wife could use staff shower room.
Dog wash did not have any hose attached, so we couldn’t wash our dog.
When trying to peg the awning down, it was very difficult as it felt you were trying to knock them directly into concrete after an inch of so and I bent so many rock pegs!

Local attractions

Starting your explores of the local area is as simple as wandering next door to Strensall Common, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and with plenty of paths to wander along (some of them accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs). York (20 minutes) is a must, of course – for history at the Jorvik Viking Centre, walks along the old walls and visits to the National Railway Museum. For more on the heritage front, next stops should certainly be Castle Howard (15 minutes), Nunnington Hall (25 minutes) and Rievaulx Abbey (35 minutes). There's a Go Ape adventure park at Dalby Forest (35 minutes) for an active day out. And there’s always the prospect of a trip to the coast at Filey (45 minutes) or Scarborough (50 minutes)… Can’t make your mind up? The team here has assembled a collection of podcasts to give you a flavour of some of the options and help you make your decisions.
