  • Spacious adults-only Yorkshire site with easy access from the A64
  • A 20-minute drive from central York and 45 minutes from the coast
  • Eco-friendly site with a nature trail and nest box webcams
Gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside all around, handy access to the A64 and York a mere 20 minutes’ drive down the road… there’s no denying Flaxton Meadows is in a very fine setting indeed. And it has a good mix of rural views too – this is a site that has farmland on one side and the wildlife-packed Strensall Common heathland on the other. And that means plenty of options for cyclists and walkers, whether you’re into strolling on local paths or tackling longer outings on the likes of the Ebor Way or Yorkshire Wolds Way. Don’t know where to start? The team on site are on hand to offer advice. As well as day trips to York, they also frequently recommend outings to Castle Howard and Scarborough. Being rather proud of their area, the owners here have put in a lot of effort to make their place eco friendly, kitting it out with renewable energy sources, establishing wildlife areas and using sustainable building materials where possible. A nature trail and educational boards help guests to get to know the area and nest-box webcams give everyone the chance to get a closer look at what’s rustling in the trees.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: We found our stay to brilliant, from the staff that greeted us on our arrival to the facilities which were immaculate, the on site bar was a well stocked and a friendly place , the pitches are all huge , one very slight negative, I think it would be useful to have a floor squeegee in each shower so as to be able to dry the floor off before getting dressed , will definitely be re-booking soon.

Two good hairdryers in the ladies ( thankyou ) The staff are amazing, so friendly and welcoming, and the bar was great, got us chatting to other people, a lovely leaflet also when we arrived gave us all the information we needed, this truly is a wonderful place to stay.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Probably the warmest greeting we’ve ever had in all our years of camping/touring. Very welcoming wardens who were very friendly and knowledgeable of the site showing us where everything was. A peaceful location with a nature trail around the site, free Wi-Fi, the toilet/shower facilities were spotless and also had onsite bar, washer/dryer. Security barrier into the site making it very secure . Occasional sighting of the silent robot mowers and resident peacocks. We will definitely return here when we are next in the area and highly recommend 10/10

Local attractions

Starting your explores of the local area is as simple as wandering next door to Strensall Common, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and with plenty of paths to wander along (some of them accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs). York (20 minutes) is a must, of course – for history at the Jorvik Viking Centre, walks along the old walls and visits to the National Railway Museum. For more on the heritage front, next stops should certainly be Castle Howard (15 minutes), Nunnington Hall (25 minutes) and Rievaulx Abbey (35 minutes). There's a Go Ape adventure park at Dalby Forest (35 minutes) for an active day out. And there’s always the prospect of a trip to the coast at Filey (45 minutes) or Scarborough (50 minutes)… Can’t make your mind up? The team here has assembled a collection of podcasts to give you a flavour of some of the options and help you make your decisions.
