General
- Spacious rural North Yorkshire site with easy access from the A64
- A 20-minute drive from central York and 45 minutes from the coast
- Eco-friendly site with nature trail and nest box webcams
Gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside all around, handy access to the A64 and York a mere 20 minutes’ drive down the road… there’s no denying Flaxton Meadows is in a very fine setting indeed.
And it’s a good mix of rural views too – this is a site that’s got farmland on one side and the wildlife-packed Strensall Common heathland on the other. And that means plenty of options for cyclists and walkers, whether you’re into strolling on local paths or tackling longer outings on the likes of the Ebor Way or Yorkshire Wolds Way.
Don’t know where to start? The team on site are on hand to offer advice, or point you towards other activities including golf, pony trekking and hot air ballooning. As well as day trips to York, they also frequently recommend outings to Castle Howard, Flamingo Land and the Scarborough (and they keep plenty of ideas on hand for family wet-weather days out too… just in case).
Being rather proud of their area, the owners here have put in a lot of effort to make their place eco-friendly, kitting it out with renewable energy sources, establishing wildlife areas and using sustainable building materials where possible. A kids’ nature trail and educational boards help guests to get to know the area and nest-box webcams give everyone the chance to get a closer look at what’s rustling in the trees.

Local attractions
Starting your explores of the local area is as simple as wandering next door to Strensall Common, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and with plenty of paths to wander along (some of them accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs). Piglets Adventure Farm (10 minutes’ drive) is a good bet if the kids are keen to see bigger animals.
York (20 minutes) is a must, of course – for history at the Jorvik Viking Centre, walks along the old walls and visits to the National Railway Museum. For more on the heritage front, next stops should certainly be Castle Howard (15 minutes), Nunnington Hall (25 minutes) and Rievaulx Abbey (35 minutes).
Kids not into such things? Try Flamingo Land (25 minutes) or the Go Ape adventure park at Dalby Forest (35 minutes). And there’s always the prospect of a trip to the coast at Filey (45 minutes) or Scarborough (50 minutes)…
Can’t make your mind up? The team here has assembled a collection of podcasts to give you a flavour of some of the options and help you make your decisions.

Dear Anonymous,
I am sorry you feel this way, if you would have left me your name we could have compensated you in some way.
I would like to point out that it was Jubilee weekend and everybody was celebrating and we had extended pub hours until 1 in the morning, and we closed at our normal time. Other campers were celebrating.
I am slightly confused saying that staff members were drunk because you are not allowed to drink when working behind a bar.
In terms of facilities we well exceed the campsite regulations for toilets, sinks and showers and all I can suggest it was an exceptionally busy period.
I am sorry you felt the train line bothered you but there are only a few trains on it a day, and the trains are off the site and beyond our control.
It is a shame that you have posted your review as anonymous but you are more than welcome to get in touch with me to address your points on our main number. As you can see from all the reviews about our camp site they have all been first class.
I am surprised you said there were no staff around as I live on site!!
As private owner I have put my heart and sole into this campsite over the last few years with the ultimate dream to have one of the best campsites around. I am saddened and heart felt by your review.
This is by no way indicative of the service that we strive to provide.
I look forward to hearing from you at the office.
