  • Spacious adults-only Yorkshire site with easy access from the A64
  • A 20-minute drive from central York and 45 minutes from the coast
  • Eco-friendly site with a nature trail and nest box webcams
Gorgeous North Yorkshire countryside all around, handy access to the A64 and York a mere 20 minutes’ drive down the road… there’s no denying Flaxton Meadows is in a very fine setting indeed. And it has a good mix of rural views too – this is a site that has farmland on one side and the wildlife-packed Strensall Common heathland on the other. And that means plenty of options for cyclists and walkers, whether you’re into strolling on local paths or tackling longer outings on the likes of the Ebor Way or Yorkshire Wolds Way. Don’t know where to start? The team on site are on hand to offer advice. As well as day trips to York, they also frequently recommend outings to Castle Howard and Scarborough. Being rather proud of their area, the owners here have put in a lot of effort to make their place eco friendly, kitting it out with renewable energy sources, establishing wildlife areas and using sustainable building materials where possible. A nature trail and educational boards help guests to get to know the area and nest-box webcams give everyone the chance to get a closer look at what’s rustling in the trees.

What customers say

Flaxton Meadows is a top-rated adults-only campsite with brilliant, modern facilities, big pitches, and super friendly staff. The on-site bar and pizza van are hits. It's a chilled spot, perfect for seeing York. Wi-Fi can be spotty and you'll need a car, but most guests rave about it.

Mitchell's Field electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Second visit to Flaxton for my wife and myself, 1st time at risk of a storm and this time basking sunshine, cannot fault the place, pitches are a good size, staff are excellent and the amenities are spotless, pizza van is a gem, pub is cracking also, it's such a relaxing place to just chill and unwind and leave the hustle and bustle behind, can easily see us coming back for the hat-trick

From the manager: Thank you Tony for taking the time to leave a review. We’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed the friendly welcome from our team

We’re sorry the ground on your caravan pitch made it difficult to put pegs in, especially during drier spells when it can become quite hard. We appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you back again soon.

Mitchell's Field electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We had a fantastic weekend stay at this campsite and would definitely return. The facilities were absolutely spotless throughout our stay, and we loved the music playing in the shower blocks – it was such a nice touch! The staff were all friendly and welcoming, the site was calm and peaceful, and the pitch size was amazing with plenty of space.

Disliked If I was being really picky, We had to wait almost two hours for our pizza as everyone had the same idea as we did of pitching up and grabbing a pizza instead of cooking although the bar was great with a lovely atmosphere so we enjoyed a few extras drinks- the next night looked like no wait time so next time will remember to wait till then next night, I think the cheesy garlic pizza recipe could do with a review, as it had a strange sweet and bitter/raw garlic taste, and unfortunately we ended up throwing it away.

From the manager: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review. We’re delighted to hear you had a fantastic weekend with us and that you enjoyed the clean facilities, peaceful atmosphere, spacious pitch and the music in the shower blocks.

We’re sorry you had such a long wait for pizza on your first evening. It can get especially busy when lots of guests have the same great idea after pitching up, but we completely understand that a two-hour wait is frustrating. Thank you also for the feedback on the cheesy garlic pizza — we’ll certainly review this with the team, as we want everything we serve to be something guests really enjoy.
It’s great to hear you still enjoyed the bar and its atmosphere, and we’d be absolutely delighted to welcome you back again.

Local attractions

Starting your explores of the local area is as simple as wandering next door to Strensall Common, managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and with plenty of paths to wander along (some of them accessible to pushchairs and wheelchairs). York (20 minutes) is a must, of course – for history at the Jorvik Viking Centre, walks along the old walls and visits to the National Railway Museum. For more on the heritage front, next stops should certainly be Castle Howard (15 minutes), Nunnington Hall (25 minutes) and Rievaulx Abbey (35 minutes). There's a Go Ape adventure park at Dalby Forest (35 minutes) for an active day out. And there’s always the prospect of a trip to the coast at Filey (45 minutes) or Scarborough (50 minutes)… Can’t make your mind up? The team here has assembled a collection of podcasts to give you a flavour of some of the options and help you make your decisions.
