  • Quiet family-friendly site on a working smallholding
  • Hire firepits, meet animals and buy fresh produce from the farm
  • Four miles from the Suffolk coast and near several nature reserves
Fancy a stay on a smashing Suffolk smallholding, in a traditional Suffolk village with a rather smashing pub – and all just four miles from the fab Suffolk coast? Blaze up a campfire and help to feed the animals at The Shottisham Campsite, based in the village of the same name a few miles from Woodbridge. The Shottisham Campsite is part of a working smallholding home to rare breed goats, pigs, alpacas and poultry, all of which guests are welcome to meet, greet and help feed during their stay. Homemade preserves and free-range eggs and meat are available to buy from the site team, along with firewood: campfires are allowed on site in firepits, which are available for hire for guests. The campsite also opens up the Blue Rabbit Café for woodfired pizzas on Friday nights during the high season. Pitches are spread across several small fields bordered by native trees and bushes. Amenities include two small shower blocks with plenty of hot water powered by solar energy; washing-up areas; a chemical disposal point; waste and recycling bins and a fridge freezer for guests' use. Dogs on secure leads are welcome and there's direct access from the site to walking trails through acres of heathland, forest and fields. The nearest beach is the fabulously peaceful Shingle Street (10 minutes' drive away), with the seaside towns of Aldeburgh (half an hour) and Southwold (45 minutes) also well worth visiting.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The site is very clean and well kept. The farm animals are a delight . The animal experience is one not to miss. Just remember you will get dirty . We have been coming on and off to this camp site for a few years. That says it all really. Fab for children to explore .

Disliked Nothing to dislike. Real shame the Rabbit cafe could not open as from experience it’s fab . We missed it.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review and I am really pleased you enjoyed the animal feeding experience. Cafe is now open for pop-up wood-fired pizzas on Friday nights. I am hoping to have it open for brunches at weekends next year - just trying to work out how currently - I need more hours in the day!
Looking forward to seeing you again

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Loved the fact that there was different areas which had around 4 pitches within them. All very close to the on site facilities such as showers and toilets. Toilets were kept very clean. Perfect for children as has a great play area, alongside this the animal feeding was brilliant. Arya makes it very personable and ensures that all of the children have an amazing time. She is a great host. Washing up facilities were perfect. Bought sausage, bacon and egg’s from Arya which was hand reared on site. Also bought logs for our fire pit. Lovely pub within walking distance which was very welcoming with nice food and drink options. Would return again for sure.

Disliked Toilet roll was a little sparse at times. Hot water on the second night was not as warm as the first which may be due to the amount of people using the hot water at that time.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review and it was such a pleasure meeting you all - Cem (the dog) especially loved playing with you all. Hope you enjoyed the bacon and sausages. Sometimes the hot water does run out - sorry. I have limited electricity and the tanks are heating up all the time, but at very busy times it can run out. I am saving up for more solar panels so hopefully it won't be an issue for much longer.
Looking forward to seeing you again

Liked Lovely spacious campsite.
Excellent facilities in a rural setting.
20min bike ride to the coast and little ferry to Felixstow.
Some really friendly chicken’s!

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review, I am so pleased you had a good time. The ferry to Felixstow is so lovely. Me and the dog love going over there and walking along the coast to Felixstow. Sometimes I think the chickens are a little too friendly! But they are cute. Lovely photos - thank you.

Disliked Showers not working in the hottest week of the year!

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I am sorry the showers in one of the toilet blocks were not working. I was waiting for the plumber to come and fix them. The showers in the two new toilet blocks by the campsite entranec were working though.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely space, free to use fridge/freezer and plenty of wooded footpaths to explore from the site

Disliked Shame the nearest shower was out of order and the on-site cafe also not open as no other options in the village if required

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review - glad you enjoyed our lovely location in this area of outstanding natural beauty. We are so lucky to be able to walk directly to the river, woodland and heath land from the campsite.
One of the downsides of being in such an unspoilt rural location though is that there are not many food options nearby. The cafe will be opening in a couple of weeks for wood-fired pizzas on a Friday evening. I am hoping that the cafe will also reopen at weekends for brunches and lunches in 2027. Currently I am running everything by myself so I will have to organise some extra help to enable the cafe to open on Saturday and Sundays. Meanwhile the pub is open most days and is opening a small cafe too.

Sorry the shower was out of order in the old block. I am waiting for my plumber to come and resolve the airlock - he should be here this week. The showers in the other two shower blocks were working though.
Hope to see you again soon

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely leafy site with large pitches. Love the chickens walking around, the alpacas and other animals.

Disliked We have been coming for 4 years and the facilities has deteriorating over the years. The showers need a good scrub, the showers are too hot for me to use, the wood tiles outside the shower cubicles can’t be cleaned. The washing up area needs a new roof and a daily ( at least) clean. We see that the campsite still advertise a Cafe, well in 4 years it has never been open and I don’t think it ever will open. The electricity supply is very iffy. We don’t think we will be back again.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: I am so sorry you didn't have a good experience staying at the campsite.

I have no idea what you mean by the EHU hook-up points not working and the electricity being "iffy". My entire campsite is certified each year by my electrician in March - the certificate is displayed on the notice board. All of the hook-up points are working. This weekend I was full and no-one has mentioned a problem with the hook-up. If you had noticed a problem, why didn't you text me and I would have come and resolved it?

Sorry you thought that the toilets were not clean. Most campers find them to be extremely well maintained and frequently comment in their reviews how clean they are - see reviews below. They are cleaned regularly, but I have limited control control over how people leave the toilets after cleaning, but generally I think most people try and leave the facilities as they found them.

I am not sure what you mean by the washing up area needing a new roof - the main facilities were only built in 2018 and the roof over the washing up area is fine. Again they are cleaned on a regular basis but how they appear does depend on how customers leave them.

The cafe has been open in the last 4 years. It was closed in in 2024 because I was seriously ill for a year and I couldn't run it. Last year it reopened doing wood-fired pizzas on a Friday evening. I am currently running the business alone so I can't open it on summer weekends as I used to. Thsi is something I am hoping to change next year when I have more help on the campsite. The cafe was never open mid-week and out of season, as the campsite is located in a very rural area and there isn't the trade to justify opening it at this time. This year, the cafe will again open as a pizzeria on Fridays in the summer months - opening has been delayed by a few weeks as I have again been very unwell - auto-immune diseases are extremely inconvenient. There are updates about the cafe opening times on the website.

Local attractions

The Shottisham Campsite is two miles from the River Deben, which can be explored via canoe or pleasure boat trip for lazy afternoons. If you'd rather make a break for the beach, the wild and unspoilt pebble beach at Shingle Street is your closest; for a sandy beach you'll need to travel to Felixstowe (35 minutes' drive) or Southwold (45 minutes). The handsome coastal town of Aldeburgh, home to a couple of top-rated fish and chip shops as well as fishermen's huts selling the latest catch, is also within easy reach. About four miles away is the market town of Woodbridge, lying along the River Deben and near both the 3,700 acres and miles of bike trails of Rendlesham Forest and the fab ancient burial site of Sutton Hoo, famed as the most significant Anglo-Saxon site in the land. Orford and Framlingham castles are also good old options in the area, or you could go wildlife watching instead, at one of the several nature reserves around including Orford Ness National Nature Reserve and RSPB Minsmere. The Alde Estuary around Snape Maltings is another well-known spot for wildlife watching; after a nature spotting trip, trek into town to take in a show at the Snape Maltings Concert Hall (an oyster bar is in the hall too). Plenty of other options are within five miles of Shottisham, including fishing, sailing, a public swimming pool, a cinema, golf, horse riding and several pubs and restaurants.
