  • Quiet family-friendly site on a working smallholding with a café
  • Hire firepits, meet animals and buy fresh produce from the farm
  • Four miles from the Suffolk coast and near several nature reserves
Fancy a stay on a smashing Suffolk smallholding, in a traditional Suffolk village with a rather smashing pub – and all just four miles from the fab Suffolk coast? Blaze up a campfire and help to feed the animals at The Shottisham Campsite, based in the village of the same name a few miles from Woodbridge. The Shottisham Campsite is part of a working smallholding home to rare breed goats, pigs, alpacas and poultry, all of which guests are welcome to meet, greet and help feed during their stay. Homemade preserves and free-range eggs and meat are available to buy from the site team, along with firewood: campfires are allowed on site in firepits, which are available for hire for guests. The campsite is also home to the Blue Rabbit Café, a farm-to-fork setup that serves up home-made breakfasts, brunches and cakes (and hosts a visit from Pete's Pizzas most Fridays for an easy evening meal). Pitches are spread across several small fields bordered by native trees and bushes. Amenities include two small shower blocks with plenty of hot water powered by solar energy; washing-up areas; a chemical disposal point; waste and recycling bins and a fridge freezer for guests' use. Dogs on secure leads are welcome and there's direct access from the site to walking trails through acres of heathland, forest and fields. The nearest beach is the fabulously peaceful Shingle Street (10 minutes' drive away), with the seaside towns of Aldeburgh (half an hour) and Southwold (45 minutes) also well worth visiting.

Electric grass pitch

Liked A lovely open site with lots of room between vans/tents ensuring privacy.
Fabulous walks nearby, long or short which was lovely for the dog. Children will love seeing alpacas, sheep, goats, chickens etc and able to attend a guided feeding occasion. The Sorrell Horse pub close by was lovely. Only a 10 minute walk. A lovely weekend break, thank you.

Disliked Would have liked the cafe to be open and maybe a small shop.
My early afternoon shower was tepid but probably my fault for leaving it so late.
We will be back!!

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review and I am so pleased you liked staying on the campsite and enjoyed all the fabulous walks nearby.

Sorry about the showers, as we are not yet that busy I didn't have them at maximum capacity, but I have remedied that now. Unfortunately, as we are so rural we only have 2-phase electricity which means the water heats up more slowly and it can run out at busy times. I'm hoping to invest in some more solar panels over the next year which should help.

Similarly our rural location means it is hard for the cafe to sustain itself when it is not peak season - I also need to get some more help ion running it - more plans for the future.
hope to see you again soon

From the manager: Hi,
Thank you for your lovely review and I am pleased you enjoyed the animals and the peace and quiet - we are so lucky here.

Sorry about the hot water - as it isn't very busy at the moment I didn't have the water heater at maximum capacity. I have remedied that now and hopefully it solves the problem. I wil also ask the electrician to double check the immersions in case one of them is broken.

as we are very rural we only have access to 2-phase electricity so we are limited in how much water we can heat up at once. While the tanks are continually heating it does mean that sometimes in busy times of the day it can run a bit cold. I'm hoping to get more solar panels which might help with this.
hope to see you again soon

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review. I am so pleased you had a lovely time staying at the campsite. The Friday night pop-up wood-fired pizzeria will be open from late May onwards. Cafe will hopefully re-open for weekend brunch and lunch next year. Hope to see you again soon

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Quiet site, big spacey pitches. Showers are lovely and hot and very clean, along with the toilet facilities . Lovely location in a sleepy rural village, but with facilities like a pub and a large kids park.

Electric grass pitch

Liked No check in. Clean site. Lots of room per pitch. Easily accessible toilets. Toilets clean and spacious. Showers also good size ( didn’t use as we stayed one night but looked clean).Park for children. Very easy and relaxed entry and exit to the site. Didn’t get to use a lot the site had to offer but will return in the future and would recommend.

Disliked Not really one to add. I guess WiFi could be better but doesn’t matter if you want to escape the tech world. No signal for my phone either but it’s good to disconnect for me.

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review, I am so pleased that you enjoyed staying on the campsite and I look forward to welcoming you back again in the future. The phone coverage is awful - one of the downsides of living in such a rural (but beautiful) spot. I am still struggling to sort out the wi-fi system I had installed - there appears to be no ongoing support which is disappointing, but I might try and change providers in the hope that it will help

Liked We had a lovely time and the host Anya was fantastic. The site is very clean and nicely spaced out between sites. Great access to a play park for the kids and they loved the animals. Great location for getting around.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Site smaller than it looked on the map. Grandson loved being next to the animals and in the morning the chickens were outside the van which made his day. Nice walk in the woods next to us and toilets and shower nice and close.

Disliked Nothing really. Would of been nice to see someone working there but I had a number if I had a problem. All other campers nice and friendly. Didn't know of road closure which meant going through all the lanes which was dodgy at time but not campsites concern.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review. I am glad your grandson enjoyed the animals - the chickens are a real highlight of the campsite. I am always bopping about on the campsite and smallholding and am available if there is ever a problem, or if people fancy saying hello, but I do run the campsite with a low-key, laid back vibe so people can really relax. I can always be reached by text though :) hope to see you again soon

Liked Excellent little site this, everyone loved it and there were walks and bike routes straight out the site. Pub close by too.

Host was lovely and invited the kids to join in with feeding the animals which was thoroughly enjoyed.

Local attractions

The Shottisham Campsite is two miles from the River Deben, which can be explored via canoe or pleasure boat trip for lazy afternoons. If you'd rather make a break for the beach, the wild and unspoilt pebble beach at Shingle Street is your closest; for a sandy beach you'll need to travel to Felixstowe (35 minutes' drive) or Southwold (45 minutes). The handsome coastal town of Aldeburgh, home to a couple of top-rated fish and chip shops as well as fishermen's huts selling the latest catch, is also within easy reach. About four miles away is the market town of Woodbridge, lying along the River Deben and near both the 3,700 acres and miles of bike trails of Rendlesham Forest and the fab ancient burial site of Sutton Hoo, famed as the most significant Anglo-Saxon site in the land. Orford and Framlingham castles are also good old options in the area, or you could go wildlife watching instead, at one of the several nature reserves around including Orford Ness National Nature Reserve and RSPB Minsmere. The Alde Estuary around Snape Maltings is another well-known spot for wildlife watching; after a nature spotting trip, trek into town to take in a show at the Snape Maltings Concert Hall (an oyster bar is in the hall too). Plenty of other options are within five miles of Shottisham, including fishing, sailing, a public swimming pool, a cinema, golf, horse riding and several pubs and restaurants.
