  • Eco-friendly wooden pods behind the 16th-century pub in Lidgate
  • A 15-minute drive from Newmarket; 20 minutes from Bury St Edmunds
  • Two bedrooms, two shower rooms and kitchenette for each pod
The beauty of a stay at a pub is, of course, the ability to get from dinner and drinks to your cosy bed with just a very short stroll – and this is very much the case at The Star at Lidgate, in the lovely little Suffolk village of Lidgate. The pods here are right next to the village pub – and what a village pub it is, with 16th-century carved beams and inglenook fireplaces among the features that have earned it Grade II listing status. Outside, there’s a large garden with a play area and a cute mini herd of pygmy goats, and inside there’s a fabulous menu of locally sourced dishes (plus a kids’ menu and Sunday roasts) and plenty of drinks (including a most enticing gin menu…) Mind you, the pods here have been so well-designed they’d make a fabulous place to stay even if you had zero interest in the pub. The eco-friendly wooden cabins sleep up to six and they’re packed with useful features including two bedrooms, two shower rooms, a well-equipped kitchenette and a private terrace with outdoor seating. Safety is paramount here, so you’ll have secure bike storage, security lights and smart-access locks that use codes generated for each stay (no worries about losing keys around here…) And sustainability is at the heart of the place too, so the cabins are made of PEFC-certified wood, use insulation made of recycled plastic bottles and have air source heat pumps for heating and hot water. Essentially everything here is set up to make your stay easy: bedding, towels and kitchen utensils are all provided, so you’ll just need to sort the fun bits like food and drinks.

2 bedroom camping pod

Liked: Nicely situated for nearket races and an hour from friends.

Disliked: Cleaning was substandard leaving not a lot to your imagination rubbish under beds and sofa . Bed settee was broken shower trays were dirty . Safety locks need for windows so you have them open but safety so children can't fallout or anybody get in as bedrooms back on to foot path . In the grounds of Pub there food is over priced and rated don't waste your money .

From the manager: I have issued a full refund for your stay. Please accept my sincerest apologies for the problems you encountered with us. Firstly, I want to apologise for the issues with cleaning you faced during your stay. I have raised the issue with our cleaners, and we are now implementing a more rigorous cleaning system. Thank you for your note on safety locks for the windows; this is a good suggestion. We welcome all feedback and will use it to improve the cabins for future guests.

2 bedroom camping pod

Liked: The pods are nicely situated, in a pretty location.

Disliked: These are very expensive for what you get. The interiors smelt of damp and were not particularly clean. The pods are really poorly equipped (not even coffee making facilities). The beds were really uncomfortable. Wifi was advertised, but not provided. Some of this would have been OK if the pods had been half the price or less. As it is, we were pretty disappointed with the experience.

From the manager: Hi there, I want to apologise for the issues experienced and explain the reason for the errors from our side. Firstly, I can see an error in the listing cost and you were charged double what you should have been paid. I have refunded you the total amount paid. I apologise that we couldn’t offer you a better overall experience. The cleanliness of the cabins is non-negotiable and I’m very sorry that during your stay you experienced poor smells and a messy cabin. We have since updated our cleaning software and procedures to ensure this doesn't happen again. I have updated our listing to clarify the availability of wifi. We had originally provided wifi but the connection was so bad that it was next to useless. It was my fault for not updating the listing. You were double charged so the pods should have been half the price, but this doesn’t excuse the issues you experienced. Our offering is supposed to be affordable and good value, which is why we don’t provide extensive equipment and amenities within the cabins. However, the issues with the cleanliness, smells and beds are not acceptable so please accept my sincere apologies for this. Once again I’m very sorry for all the problems listed in your review.

Local attractions

Fancy leaving the car behind for a day? There are some good walking trails starting from Lidgate, ranging from a mile to 10 miles – all with the prospect of a pint at the end. If you need a little more activity, it’s handy that there’s a park next to the pub with cricket nets, football goals and a zipline. Outdoors but less active? Try a day at either Hermitage Fisheries (15 minutes’ drive) or Foxearth Fisheries (25 minutes). There are some fine golf courses nearby too – especially Links Golf Club (15 minutes) and The Gog Magog Golf Club (half an hour) – and a Go Ape treetop course in Thetford Forest (half an hour) for the daredevils. This location is also a good one for racing fans, thanks to its proximity to Newmarket (15 minutes), commonly known as the ‘home of British horse racing’. For other days out, head to Bury St Edmunds (20 minutes) or Ely (35 minutes), both of which are full of history.
