Willows Park and Marina: Around the grounds

General

  • Peaceful family-run site a short stroll from the Great Ouse river
  • Canoe and small craft launch, fishing and play park
  • Acclaimed and dog-friendly gastropub within 150 metres

Pitch up near the river and launch your canoe with ease at this small, secluded, friendly and well-maintained green site in Cambridgeshire countryside… or dangle a rod into the water for a spot of (free) coarse fishing, or keep a lazy eye on the offspring at the play park while you lounge about in this scenic setting… all up for easy grabs at Willows Park and Marina near Huntingdon and a short stroll from the Great Ouse river.

All pitches are on grass, some under the handsome willow trees. Both areas have easy access to the well-maintained and heated bathroom block with toilets, showers, a big disabled-access bathroom, a laundry room and washing-up areas.

There's plenty of room around the site and along the river for wanders; if your feet want to take you further, you can hook up with the Ouse Valley Way from Brampton or Huntingdon (or both; The Willows lies between the two). There's more coarse fishing too at the lake 750 metres away, you can hire boats a couple of miles away, and the watersports and events of Grafham Water are within 20 minutes' drive.

Barbecues are allowed on site, but you might, sensibly, opt to sup and sip instead at the neighbouring Brampton Mill gastropub by the river a minute's walk away: it's dog-friendly here too.

Location is great - good stopover point
    Clean and well kept site

    Disliked:

Entry and exit barrier system - site manager operated which is very restrictive
All other sites we have stayed at use an entry code on these types of barrier
Manager was frustrated that we didn’t leave at 11 on the dot - first time we have encountered this - I can understand the need for prompt departure at peak holiday times - but frankly this was the last day of the new year break (we left at 11.21…)
I suspect from the reactions I’ve read to previous negative feedback, the response to this feedback will be sarcastic and met without any grace - but hey ho…

From the manager...

We have a security barrier that is operated by the managers due to our location, managing who comes on and off site.

At 11am people were leaving but this party decided to get up late and when I asked if they were ready to leave , they decided to take their dog for a walk, go to the showers and were in no hurry to leave .

Check out time is up until 11 am giving an hour to allow time to prepare for check ins at 12

The site was well laid out clean and the owners were so helpful throughout our stay including helping with a bit of minor maintenance and get a car started as well. Located next to lovely river walks and a great pub/restaurant….. will be going back in the summer at some point…..

Unfortunately not everyone pays attention to the information notices, resulting in major inconvenience for fellow guests, hence the need to draw particular attention but thank you for your observations.

Beautifully well kept site - secure and great location for our weekend trip. Site managers also kept in touch as we had a long drive and only just made their cut off time - thank you! Plus super helpful with extra long electric hook up lead as they wanted to keep us off the grass in these wet winter months.

Great pub nearby too so that was also a plus...be nice to come again in the summer months. Looked like some good walks and we did get lost in the dark on one :)

    Disliked:

Husband washed up and said the water wasn't very hot - that was a minor thing!
Everything else was good - showers nice and hot.

Paying for wifi - so many sites offer free access now, but I guess this is easier for licensing.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, see you in the summer.

Local attractions

The Willows is a 10-minute walk – or five minutes by bus – from its closest village of Brampton, where there are another two recommended foodie and dog-friendly pubs, the Black Bull and the Dragoon. Brampton's also the place to hail Captain Tim's river ferry to Godmanchester and back; this is dog friendly too.

For watery sports, there's a sailing club and a watersports centre at Grafham Water, alongside a good-size centre that also includes outdoor playgrounds, Segway hire, a 10-mile circular cycle track (and bike hire), and trout and coarse fishing. The centre's 200-acre nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest runs regular activities and events.

Also recommended are Hinchingbrooke House and country park, a few hundred metres away, Pepys House at Brompton and the Cromwell Museum at Huntingdon (both within a couple of miles), and seeing the bird of prey displays at the Raptor Foundation, 20 minutes' drive away at Woodhurst.

Must see

  • Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial (13.0 miles)
  • Wimpole Hall and Home Farm (14.1 miles)
  • RSPB The Lodge Nature Reserve (14.4 miles)
