Play park

General

  • Peaceful family-run site a short stroll from the Great Ouse river
  • Canoe and small craft launch, fishing and play park
  • Acclaimed and dog-friendly gastropub within 150 metres

Pitch up near the river and launch your canoe with ease at this small, secluded, friendly and well-maintained green site in Cambridgeshire countryside... or dangle a rod into the water for a spot of (free) coarse fishing, or keep a lazy eye on the offspring at the play park while you lounge about in this scenic setting... all up for easy grabs at Willows Park and Marina near Huntingdon and a short stroll from the Great Ouse river.

All pitches are grass, some under the handsome willow trees. Both areas have easy access to the well-maintained and heated amenity block with toilets, showers, a big disabled-access bathroom, a laundry room and washing-up areas.

There's plenty of room around the site and along the river for wanders; if your feet want to take you further, you can hook up with the Ouse Valley Way from Brampton or Huntingdon (or both; The Willows lies between the two). There's more coarse fishing too at the lake 750 metres away, you can hire boats a couple of miles away, and the watersports and events of Grafham Water are within 20 minutes' drive.

Barbecues are allowed on site, but you might, sensibly, opt to sup and sip instead at the neighbouring Brampton Mill gastropub by the river a minute's walk away: it's dog friendly here too.

What a lovely little site....well maintained and secure...the toilet/shower facilities were clean and stayed that way all week. It was nice to be escorted to our pitch and everything explained about the site. Liked the security barrier for the caravans with a separate exit for cars to leave the site at free will. We especially loved all the walks over to Huntingdon and Godmanchester through the Meadow and around the Country park near the site.....Enjoyed our little break here

    Close to river
Clean site ( very quiet , everyone seemed to be in bed by 9pm!)
Proper outside clothes aired / drying area
Fridge for tent campers to use
Washing machine ( sign would be useful as was in entrance for ladies shower block)
    Swings area for kids
    Reasonable price

    Disliked:

Very strict hours on opening times for gates / late entry, ie. half hour late and was made to camp in a different field despite phoning ahead - non negotiable.

From the manager...

Thank you very much for your great review. To clear up any misunderstanding the pitch you were given was your allocated pitch. I gave you that one as its the closest one to access the Marina. I thought it would be easier getting your kayaks across from there. The Marina field is for members of the Caravan & Motorhome club and we are not able to use it for tent bookings through Pitch Up.
Our latest check in is 7pm. We do advertise this on Pitch Up and on our own website. We do not have a late arrivals area. I have tried to make this as clear as possible on Pitch Up.
I will add a sign for the washing machine to help other customers.
Thank you again and we do hope you will come back. Your children were so well behaved and it was a pleasure to have you on our park.
Kind Regards, Paul & Kirsty

Locked in till 9am making travel to motorhome dropoff by 10am limit very stressful. Told could not walk dog round site on lead. No motorhome service facility, making water fill and grey empty impossible.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review us . If I can answer the comments that you have made regarding our park.
Our reception / park opening hours are listed on pitch up. We are open from 9am until 7pm. We do not advertise that we cater for early departures or late arrivals.
Your hired Motorhome was from Just Go Motorhomes. We have lots of their customers stay with us as we are just over 30 minutes from where they are based. No one as ever had a problem before.
We do not have a drive over motorhome point and we do not advertise one. We have water points around the park which you can attach a hose to in order to fill up. You did find that a hose was supplied and I agreed you could leave your pitch to get close enough to fill up. You then decided you had enough water so did not need to.
Most motorhome users take a small wastemaster with them as lots of sites to not have drive over points for emptying tanks. ( this is what we do). This may have been supplied to you?
There is no reason to walk your dog over other peoples pitches as we have lovely walks direct from the park right by the river. You have mentioned these so I am unsure why it was a problem.
All in all we tried to be as helpful as we could as you seemed totally overwhelmed by your camping experience. You were very worried about being fined for not filling up with gas and water. I have never seen a customer so stressed.
Our park was never going to meet your requirements so I can only suggest if you should hire a motorhome again that you take a minute to check where and what you are booking.
Regards, Paul & Kirsty

Local attractions

The Willows is a 10-minute walk – or five minutes by bus – from its closest village Brampton, where there are another two recommended foodie and dog-friendly pubs, the Black Bull and the Dragoon. Brampton's also the place to hail Captain Tim's river ferry to Godmanchester and back; this is dog friendly too.

For watery sports, there's a sailing club and a watersports centre at Grafham Water, alongside a good-size centre that also includes outdoor playgrounds, Segway hire, a 10-mile circular cycle track (and bike hire), and trout and coarse fishing. The centre's 200-acre nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest runs regular activities and events.

Also recommended by Kirsty and Paul are Hinchingbrooke House and country park, a few hundred metres away; Pepys House at Brompton and the Cromwell Museum at Huntingdon, both within a couple of miles, and seeing the bird of prey displays at the Raptor Foundation, 20 minutes' drive away at Woodhurst.
