  • Peaceful, well-kept 112-acre site on the south shore of Rutland Water
  • A 10-minute drive from Oakham and Uppingham; golf club next door
  • Direct access to the walking/bike path around the lake's edge
You may have visited Rutland Water before, but have you ever spent the night right there on its banks? Well, here’s your chance to do just that, because Lyndon Top is spread out over a peaceful 112 acres on the southern shore, with stunning views over the water. And while those views are wonderful, there’s a fair amount more to see around the lake’s shores – so it’s handy that you can set straight out from the site for walks or bike rides on the path that runs all the way around the edge (22 miles in total). On top of that, there’s plenty of choice for other outdoorsy activities, including fly fishing, birdwatching, golf, canoeing and windsurfing (along with boat cruises and lakeside dining if you’re after minimal activity). Think a barbecue at your pitch might be more your kind of thing? Top plan. Barbecues are allowed at Lyndon Top, and you can pick up whatever supplies you need in Oakham or Uppingham (both 10 minutes’ drive), or while out in Stamford (15 minutes). Back at base, it’s a peaceful setup that welcomes families, couples and solo campers (and dogs, if you’d like to bring them) to spacious pitches in a tree-lined field. Handy facilities include picnic tables and a chemical disposal point, along with a very smart and well-equipped modern amenities block that houses stylish toilets and showers, a washing-up area, a family bathroom and accessible facilities, Lyndon Top is not the place for a party of any sort, so the site doesn’t accept bookings from single-sex groups or other non-family groups.

What customers say

This recently renovated campsite boasts stunning views of Rutland Water, spacious pitches, and incredibly clean, modern facilities described as hotel-standard. Guests consistently praise the friendly and helpful staff. While some minor points like a lack of cold water in bathrooms and insufficient hooks in shower cubicles were noted, the overwhelming sentiment is positive, with many guests eager to return. Some initial construction was ongoing, but this did not significantly impact stays.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We really liked the location and pitches on offer with views of Rutland Water. The site was busy, having stayed in the summer holidays, but it remained quite peaceful and relaxing for us and our dog - we can imagine it would be really lovely off season. We really liked the flexible check in and check out, allowing additional time to enjoy the views of the lake and relax. We also appreciated that campfires were banned, having recently stayed at a site that was actively encouraging them, despite the serious risk of wildfires this summer. The facilities were also quite fancy for a campsite, which was a nice bonus.

Disliked We didn't really dislike anything but in terms of practicality, the facilities and waste disposal were central to the site but meant they were quite far from pitches closer to the lake. It wasn't a problem and just more of a note.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We were warmly welcomed on arrival.
Shower block was high standard of decor and design.
Views (if you parked clearly and no one parked in front of you!) were beautiful.
Loads of space and lots of choice of where to go.
Ideal for children to run freely and safely.
Great sunsets.
Ice Cream van coming around the site each afternoon.
Great location for Rutland Water.

Disliked Not a dislike, just a comment: There are no shops anywhere near - so you need to be well stocked up on arrival if you don't want to drive. The huge reception hall was empty - I believe this will become a shop, which will do really well, as would a cafe.

No wifi at all, and very hard to get signal - could be a good thing or a bad thing!

The site is still a work in progress and will be interesting to return and see it all finished. Clearly has had huge investment already.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The views, the friendliness of staff. The toilet/shower block was amazing, best I've seen on any campsite, (might get a bit busy if the whole campsite was full though). Great location for exploring around Rutland Water. Nursery just up the road had a great cafe for breakfast or lunch if needed. There are also 2 pubs within 15 min bike ride in either direction.

Updated facilities

Disliked Although updated facilities - showers could have more hooks/places to put your things. Things were having to be piled on a small stool and getting wet.
Family bathrooms should not incure an extra charge - also couldn't find where to book them online.
