General

  • Secluded riverside site 20 minutes' drive from Oxford
  • Wild camping, wild swimming and kayaking
  • Brazier, logs and welcome pack included: acclaimed farm produce to buy

Wild swimming in Oxfordshire… what a clever notion. D'Oyleys Farm is an excellent option if you’re visiting Oxford and want a bit of adventure along the way: this laidback place has a riverside setting, a wild camping vibe and the means for outdoor cooking and picnics at its lush little island.

This is Boys’ – and Girls’ – Own Adventure stuff: the farm is in secluded setting by the Thame, with pitch numbers carefully managed so that guests have loads of room and plenty of peace. Plunge into the river for a wild swimming session at the designated area with shallow and deep ends as well as steps; wander by the water with picnic and book, set off kayaking… or stay on site to indulge your wild side by building dens or shinnying up trees.

A highlight of the site is the little island, where the D'Oyleys Farm team has set up the ‘BBQ shack' with cooking facilities, woodburning stove, deck space and a campfire area, where you can sizzle up supper on your own woodfired cooking stove (brazier and hurricane lantern hire plus a bag of logs are all included in the pitch price).

And another, also excellent, highlight? D'Oyleys is home to an acclaimed farm shop too and prepares breakfast packs of bacon, sausages and eggs, and barbecue packs with lamb chops, chicken drumsticks, steaks and burgers) for guests, all home produced and all easily sorted by ordering before you arrive using the details in your booking confirmation email. A welcome pack is included in the price too, with olive oil, toilet roll and other bits and pieces.

When (if) you crave a bit of city life, Oxford is half an hour by bus via the service running from the village 15 minutes’ stroll away, or about 20 minutes by car. The farm is only four miles from Junction 7 of the M40 so it’s easy to get out and about from here by car too.

The local pub (dog- and welly-friendly) is 15 minutes' walk away.

What a brilliant place!! We were camped over two pitches with an enormous field to ourselves & direct access to the river. So much space! Sharing a farm with cows, foxes, pheasants & beautiful night sky it truly feels like you’re far away from city life.... yet it’s only a stone’s throw from central Oxford! The group of teens we took loved it, our 7 year old loved it and we grown ups did too! What a find!!!
The holt is a superb idea & a lovely place to shelter or relax. Welcome pack with a map & all the essentials (including wood & a fire pit) made it perfect!

    Disliked:

Not a dislike at all but just to be clear: this is “back to basics” wild camping (ie: one composting toilet) & cold running water. We were absolutely fine with it, but it’s not to everyone’s taste!

Loved everything about this site. Peaceful & quiet, plenty of space. The river was amazing for swimming in, especially over the really hot bank holiday weekend.
We had some of the amazing sausages & bacon from the honesty shop - along with beer, prosecco & bread, all really tasty!

The Holt area was brilliant during the day as the field itself doesn't have a lot of shade in the (very hot) midday sun so we headed down there with a picnic & swimming stuff to enjoy the cool under the trees - absolutely perfect. Also had a nice big fire there on our last night. Kids played with the Lego & I borrowed a book.

Obviously there is no WiFi but we all had good mobile reception.

Thame was about a 10 minute drive & has a lovely high street with a good mix of high street & independent shops if you fancy it. Plus lots of lovely pubs!

Fi was really friendly & helpful. We can't wait to come back!

    Disliked:

Absolutely nothing. This site couldn't be any more perfect.

If you are, or have, a budding adventurer then this is the place for you! We received a warm and friendly welcome, along with a very useful welcome pack.
There’s wild swimming, kayaking, fishing for crayfish, climbing trees and the opportunity to be at one with nature – and there’s plenty of it!
You have a large pitch and a brazier, should you choose to take up the challenge to cook on it, which we did! There's a definite knack to lighting it and cooking on it as the ashed fall through. It's also not easy as only 1 medium sized pan fits on it, but that’s all part of the fun!
There’s an eco-toilet and a wonderful, hot shower, run from a leisure battery; there’s a large dishwashing area (cold water only, so take your kettle of hot water) but mind those nettles!
We could not have had worse weather on our second full day there. It heaved down and we were very grateful for the raised wooden shelter called The Holt, which has a lovely large wood-burning stove in it, along with some lego, a couple of games, books (including one on den building) and other useful camping bits and bobs for whilst you’re in there (mugs, plates, cutlery, lamps etc) With a roaring fire going we did manage to dry our jackets Swiss Family Robinson style, only to then get soaked again kayaking! We didn’t spend long in the shelter, just used it as a base from which to then go off on our expeditions!
We had a fabulous time and will definitely be returning.

    Disliked:

    Nothing!

From the manager...

Thank you for you very lovely and helpful comments; nettles are being sprayed as we speak - somehow in summer our grass doesn't grow enough but the nettles do! Come back again soon.

Everything, especially the Holt, the rope swing over the river, the kayaking, the hammock and the fact that there are so few pitches so it feels like you have a whole field to yourselves! The farm owner Fi is so friendly and welcoming, always on hand if you need anything.

    Disliked:

Only having one eco toilet for everyone on site - as clean as Fi kept it, if people are unfamiliar with eco toilets or dont follow the clearly printed instructions by the loo, then it can get a bit messy for other campers. It is however checked and cleaned regularly by Fi and well stocked with loo roll.

From the manager...

Thank you - point taken. Good feedback and we are in the process now of digging in our own klargister to avoid further problems. Thank you for being good guests.

Beautiful area. Hosts were great. The eco loo and hot shower were brilliant. The holt was brilliant. We forgot to bring gas burner to do coffee in morning, so having one in the holt was a life saver. River was great to cool off in.

    Disliked:

Not a great deal of shade near pitches in day so had to go out as was boiling in direct sun ... not their fault ... we should have brought a gazebo!

From the manager...

We are part of a conservation area so have had all the willows along the river bank pollarded and otter holts put in place. This does mean that all the natural shade that used to be provided by the willows has now gone. Sorry. A gazebo an excellent idea.

This is a very special place. Only a handful of pitches are spread across a wide area, so we had complete seclusion and peace. Each pitch has a fire pit and the friendly owner provides a welcome pack including logs. The views are tranquil. A river runs through the site and you can use the free kayaks. There is a small hideout in the woods (The Holt) with a hammock and BBQ area. The farm sells its own produce and we bought the most delicious honey.
