Wild swimming in Oxfordshire… what a clever notion. D'Oyleys Farm is an excellent option if you’re visiting Oxford and want a bit of adventure along the way: this laidback place has a riverside setting, a wild camping vibe and the means for outdoor cooking and picnics at its lush little island. The farm is in a secluded setting by the Thames, with pitch numbers carefully managed so that guests have loads of room and plenty of peace. There are four access points where you can plunge into the river for a spot of wild swimming – it's a little muddy in places (getting in and out is all about the sit and slide…) but it's fab for cooling off. A highlight of the site is the little island, where the D'Oyleys Farm team has set up the ‘BBQ shack' with cooking facilities, woodburning stove, deck space and a campfire area, where you can sizzle up supper on the woodfired cooking stove. At the camping reception, there's also a large fridge for guests to use. And another, also excellent, highlight? D'Oyleys is home to a farm shop and prepares breakfast packs (bacon, sausages and eggs) and barbecue packs (lamb chops, chicken drumsticks, steaks and burgers) for guests, all home-produced and all easily sorted by ordering before you arrive – use the details in your booking confirmation email. When (if) you crave a bit of city life, Oxford is half an hour away by bus via the service running from the village 15 minutes’ stroll away, or about 20 minutes by car. The farm is four miles from Junction 7 of the M40, so it’s easy to get out and about from here by car too. The local pubs (dog- and welly-friendly) are between 20 and 40 minutes' walk away along footpaths, depending on which one you go to; information on the routes is at the camping reception.

喜欢 The pitches are huge and separated by large distance so the total privacy was great.
Swimming in the river (and having toes nibbled by minnows :) ) was very refreshing on a very hot day.
Fi was really helpful and friendly, in person and on the phone.
The facilities were all good (a bit of walk to them but then everything is spaced out giving privacy so not a problem)

喜欢 Spacious pitches, peaceful location. Close to the river so our dog could cool off. Private compost loo. Farm shop had fresh local produce, good priced logs & an honesty system. We had a lovely welcome from Fi & the dogs.

不喜欢 Notice in private loo that we had to clean out our own loo or lose a deposit. There was no mention of this anywhere in the booking or terms.

喜欢 I liked the location and general vibe of the place, it was quiet when I was there but clearly gets busy at the weekend. The farm is old and rustic but has been very tastefully done out to attract visitors for food and partying.

不喜欢 Nothing really, if you want 5 star then why are you camping ?

喜欢 The river was safe, clean and so much fun.
Quite campsite with spread out pitches.
Clean loos and access to a fridge!

不喜欢 As a group we actually wanted to be closer together but the individual pitches could house a couple of tents so we made it work!
More drinking water taps would be great!

喜欢 For us, D'Oyley's has been not only an enjoyable trip, but a real tonic and blessing to us. Being local, we have gone a couple of times, myself and my 11 year old son. We find there peace, rest and space to be ourselves. We swim in the river (absolutely beautiful on a summer's day), having adventures going up and down stream. We cook on the outdoor stove. We take walks in the surrounding area. And in the summer evening we sit outside our tent and enjoy the scenery and the wildlife all around us. All of this is supported by Fi's kindness and attention; she is always available for a quick question and sometimes pops over riding Tractor the horse to check if we need anything. And if you are dog-lover, there will be plenty for you to enjoy. I really can't recommend this place enough; it is a haven.

The farm is between the Cotswolds and Chiltern Hills National Landscapes for hikes and scenic strolls in either direction; wanderers could also venture off to Stratford-upon-Avon (an hour and five minutes' drive) for book-themed activities or Royal Leamington Spa (an hour and five minutes). Staying close to home, a footpath leads directly from the site to local villages.
