  • Secluded riverside site on a farm 20 minutes' drive from Oxford
  • Wild swimming in the river; Chiltern Hills 15 minutes' drive
  • Firepit area and farm shop on site
Wild swimming in Oxfordshire… what a clever notion. D'Oyleys Farm is an excellent option if you’re visiting Oxford and want a bit of adventure along the way: this laidback place has a riverside setting, a wild camping vibe and the means for outdoor cooking and picnics at its lush little island. The farm is in a secluded setting by the Thames, with pitch numbers carefully managed so that guests have loads of room and plenty of peace. There are four access points where you can plunge into the river for a spot of wild swimming – it's a little muddy in places (getting in and out is all about the sit and slide…) but it's fab for cooling off. A highlight of the site is the little island, where the D'Oyleys Farm team has set up the ‘BBQ shack' with cooking facilities, woodburning stove, deck space and a campfire area, where you can sizzle up supper on the woodfired cooking stove. At the camping reception, there's also a large fridge for guests to use. And another, also excellent, highlight? D'Oyleys is home to a farm shop and prepares breakfast packs (bacon, sausages and eggs) and barbecue packs (lamb chops, chicken drumsticks, steaks and burgers) for guests, all home-produced and all easily sorted by ordering before you arrive – use the details in your booking confirmation email. When (if) you crave a bit of city life, Oxford is half an hour away by bus via the service running from the village 15 minutes’ stroll away, or about 20 minutes by car. The farm is four miles from Junction 7 of the M40, so it’s easy to get out and about from here by car too. The local pubs (dog- and welly-friendly) are between 20 and 40 minutes' walk away along footpaths, depending on which one you go to; information on the routes is at the camping reception.

Freedom primitive grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked This is an amazing campsite, which really allows for connecting with nature. The site itself is really spacious with the large pitches spread around the fields. Some of these are on the banks of the River Thame and it you're in one of the Freedom pitches there is also easy access from The Holt which is more of a communal space where you can chill in hammocks, prepare food or take a dip! There's also a deeper swimming site just a couple of minutes upstream.

There are great walks from the campsite to local pubs, including at Stadhampton, Little Milton and Cuddesdon.

The owner, Fi, was so welcoming and explained how things worked and also the directions for my walk.

I saw lots of fish and a heron by the river on my walk but I was also lucky to see a hare running around the field first thing in the morning and it was great hearing the tawny owl after sunset.

I cannot recommend this site highly enough and I'm already looking forward to my next stay when I'm returning with family.

Freedom primitive grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Had the whole place to myself. Arrived and went to the wild camping reception where I bought some wood which I could help myself to. £2.50 per armful with a card machine to pay for the amount you’ve taken. Also fresh farm produce for sale. Instructions written on walls making things very simple!
Fi and Phil were very friendly and both said hello and made me feel very welcomed considering I was a solo female camper. They ensured I had everything I needed and even let me meet their lovely dogs!
So much wildlife around the farm, red kites everywhere, hares, pheasants, cows, heron… the list goes on! Absolutely fantastic sunset and sunrise too! And… not to mention the swimming spot within a 10 minute walk from my tent!
Lovely warm showers, glamorous (as glamorous as they can be) compost toilets and water available near pitches. Able to also drive around and park next to pitches!
Overall, an absolutely lovely place that I’ll definitely be returning to!

Disliked Some part of river blocked with debris so unable to puddle board through!

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review.

We have just acquired 2 new kayaks and a small boat which will enable us to get to those hard to reach trees in the tributary and get them cleared.

Looking forward to welcoming you back again.

Freedom primitive grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Big area, few other people. Perfect! Plenty of space to be away from other people. Very quiet. Basic facilities so you have what you need, even if it’s a bit of a walk. Plenty of trees/hedges so it’s not a huge bleak area. Nice spots near the river.

Disliked Not a dislike but worth knowing - there are chemical loos dotted about but I only saw one shower and washing up place so be prepared for walk or have your own solution!

From the manager: Thank you for your lovely review.

We have noted about the chemical loos and have now installed compost loos instead which are much more nature friendly and fitting for our campsite. We have also put the compost loos at either end of the freedom camping field making them much more accessible for all campers in the freedom spot.

Beautiful peaceful retreat but workout very expensive for us

Freedom primitive grass and earth campervan, tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked The freedom of the site and the peace of the river . The little woodland hub is a gem

Disliked Using pitch up we both had to pay for a green camping subscription each . This put the price up to a ridiculous amount. Would like to know more about this as don't know where to ask or how to use it again.
Owners website did not include this price but i could not get a booking on this Have been advised by owner web site was working and that i wasn't using the drop down menu. I can confirm i was and only Eco camping would show not free camping as we wanted . Very pricy but would have paid that to the site owner as is so beautiful.

From the manager: We now have our own bespoke website where you can book directly at www.wildfarmescapes.co.uk. The Greener Camping Club membership is mandatory but only for one of the visiting campers and on the same pitch and not for both.

Sorry you had problems with the old website - this has all now been rectified.

Liked Peaceful location, space between pitches, Coach and Horses food is AMAZING!! Fi very friendly and helpful. Saw a hare and some lovely birds of prey. Very reasonable. Fire pit was great value and worked brilliantly. The Holt and swimming in the river was epic. We’ll be coming back!

Local attractions

Oxford might be your first stop: take the 20-minute drive or 30-minute bus ride to the city centre for wanders around the university buildings and museums, potters around the market, and, for Tolkien fans, a reverent pint in his fave pub The Eagle and Child. The farm is between the Cotswolds and Chiltern Hills National Landscapes for hikes and scenic strolls in either direction; wanderers could also venture off to Stratford-upon-Avon (an hour and five minutes' drive) for book-themed activities or Royal Leamington Spa (an hour and five minutes). Staying close to home, a footpath leads directly from the site to local villages. There are a few National Trust sites around too, like Watlington Hill (20 minutes), Greys Court (35 minutes) and Nuffield Place (20 minutes), which are all in the Chiltern Hills National Landscape.
