Plenty of space for tents -we also have rough camping fields if you want to get away from everyone

General

  • 70-acre estate including fields and woodlands
  • Large fishing lake with rudd, roach and tench
  • Perfect place to explore the Lincolnshire countryside

No word of a lie: you might land a whopper of a carp at Oakhill Leisure between Lincoln and Newark-on-Trent. For monsters of up to 35lb have been angled for at the site's six-acre fishing lake, as well as sizeable specimens of rudd, roach and tench.

If you're not fishing or if you feel like doing a victory lap after landing a massive carp, plenty is on hand to explore, as Oakhill is on a site made up of the 10-acre campsite, walking and playing fields covering 30 acres, and finally about 20 acres of woodland. Take the 20 to 30 minute circular walk around the lake and through the woodland; it and the site grounds are pretty handsome....

The accommodation part of Oakhill is on flat and well-drained grassland, bordered by trees on three sides and a hedge. Toilets, showers (new in 2019) and a washroom are in the facilities building and a play area is also on site.

But back to the fishing... You'll need a fishing licence (available at the post office) to fish at Oakhill Leisure, as well as your own equipment and bait; a small charge applies to angle on site. Please note that under-16s must be accompanied by an adult and that they aren't allowed to stay around the lake overnight.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bookings must not be for more than 7 consecutive nights.

The spacious fields. The grass was cut nice and short, perfect for tents etc. The shower and toilet facilities were lovely and clean. So much woodland and grounds to explore, perfect for walking the dog.
    Very dog friendly!
Newark castle is a short drive which is great for a day out or getting some shopping. The staff were very friendly and helpful, love the fact they have wood burners to hire and its only £5. Definitely going to return soon!!

    - Very quiet and pitches very level
    - Great field for dog walking
    - Staff very friendly
    - Great kids play area (sell reasonably priced ice creams in the shop)
    - Shops and takeaways nearby
    - Great shower block

    Disliked:

    - 10amp electric supply that kept blowing even with low wattage appliances (and you had to unscrew a casing to access the fuse box which got boring on 10th time). The fuse boxes are also a long way from pitches so take a long power lead
    - Friends came by the area and wanted to have a quick coffee with us - site charged £5 even though they explained were only staying for 30 mins
    - Parents visited and even though dad was on crutches and unable to walk after an op they made him park at reception
    - We took a dog and abided to the rule of keeping him on a lead at all times - a lot of dogs were running about off the lead and no one seemed to enforce it
    - Not enough mens toilets with only 2 loos for the whole site, when you've got to go....

Excellent site - clean, great showers, play-park, amazing woods 23/04/2019

We really enjoyed our stay here over the Easter weekend, helped by the fantastic sunny weather. We’d had our first ever camping experience here 7 years ago when daughter number 1 was seven months old! Perhaps we were too sleep deprived then, or learning the ropes of camping, to have noticed the amazing woodland and lakes surrounding us. They were certainly not lost on us this time.
With campervan and awning we were in the non-hook up field, with very few neighbours as there was plenty of space for campers to spread out. Great view of the field full of dandelions and daisies and a lovely flat surface on which to pitch, whether tent or campervan.
The facilities are much improved since our last visit, with a lovely shower block kept nice and clean. There is also a lovely play park for the kids, and plenty of space to kick a ball or play frisbee! But most of all we enjoyed exploring the woods and walking around the lake, there are all sorts of surprises to be discovered. The surroundings were used to full advantage by the site manager and staff who organised an Easter egg hunt for children, through the woods. Our kids thoroughly enjoyed this, and it was an unexpected, but much appreciated activity which showed thought for customers. This site is in our ‘top 10’ campsites now and we will definitely be returning.

Local attractions

Food, glorious food... bring the bike and cycle to the nearby villages of Norton Disney, Bassingham and Auborn for drinks and home-cooked Lincolnshire food in friendly well-run pubs. Evening meals recommended by the team are at the Green Man pub a mile and a half away.

Visit nearby Newark for its castle, National Civil War Centre and Newark Museum and central square with a market all day on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Food and drink are recommended here too at Oakhill Leisure's fave coffee shop Strays in Middle Gate.

The site is handy for lovely Lincoln, where you can have a look at the castle, the Medieval Bishop's Palace and the grand old cathedral: the views (and the walk to it up Steep Hill) are just a bit breathtaking...

Must see
