General

  • Quiet and spacious site on the edge of the Peak District National Park
  • Ensuite pods each with kitchen, double bed and TV and DVD player
  • Eight miles from Gullivers Kingdom and 10 from Chatsworth House

Stake your claim for a prolonged stay at the spectacular Peak District pod place of Slate House Farm, a small countryside site set on a working farm nine miles from Chesterfield. Although small and never crowded, this lush site has proved rightly popular with guests, who wax lyrical about its vies, its setting, its facilities and its friendly vibe.

The site has outstanding views over the Derbyshire countryside and is surrounded by ancient market towns, swathes of country estates and walking, cycling and mountain biking trails for intrepid adventurers. Anglers (fly and coarse) can cast off about a mile away; Matlock is within three and a half miles, and it's but a 20-minute drive from the farm to the heady sightseeing of the Heights of Abraham, where strong-minded sorts can bob about the landscape in a cable car.

Slate House Farm is fably set for Peak District family days to suit all flavours too, with famed Chatsworth House within 10 miles and even more famed (to small sorts at least) Gulliver's Kingdom within eight. Alton Towers is just under an hour's drive away.

The pods each have an ensuite bathroom, a small and well-equipped kitchen, double beds with mattresses, and a TV and DVD player. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed on site.

Stunning location, gorgeous views, very warm and friendly welcome from lovely host Sandra. Pod was great, very clean, well laid out and toasty warm. So nice to have en suite facilities and a very well equipped kitchen too. Sandra had added some very thoughtful and kind touches, like fresh eggs from her hens and marshmallows to toast on the chimenea, we enjoyed them all very much! It's also very dog friendly too, our furboy had a great time exploring and making friends with the horses. It was nice and central for everywhere we wanted to go too. Perfect, peaceful place, we can't wait to come again, loved it!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The Glampod was first class, it was clean and well maintained with everything we needed. Our 10 year old daughter loved the farm with the animals and being able to explore safely. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Slate House Farm to others.

Beautiful location with stunning views. Pod was lovely and clean, warm and very well equipped. Sandra our host was so warm, friendly and welcoming and left some really thoughtful touches like milk, tea. coffee, sugar and fresh laid eggs and marshmallows to toast on the chimenea. The bed was soft and comfy, I had a great nights sleep as did my daughter and son in law, and our dog! So nice having an en suite bathroom tooso you don't have to leave the pod to go to the loo or have a shower. Parking is very close to the pods too, very handy, only a few seconds walk down the path. My daughter booked the 2 pods for us and we weren't sure what it was going to be like as we'd never been glamping before but we LOVED it and will definitely come back here again.

Warm welcome from Sandra. Little touches like eggs and milk on arrival. Everything you need is provided and no trouble if you need anything like extra blankets. Kids loved running around the field and meeting the local ‘animal’ residents oh and toasting the marshmallows on the fire that were left for us in the pod.

Sandra was a lovely host and the pods have everything you need. Shower was lovely and hot, the field was well kept and the animals were great for the children. My daughter loved it and wants to return next year.

    Disliked:

Only two small issues - fridge was so cold it froze everything including our complimentary milk. If your bringing children bring extra bedding/sleeping bags as the sleeping bag provided was too small for my daughter and not warm enough for the chilly nights. Luckily I had brought a big blanket in the car so we used this instead.

From the manager...

Hi thank you for your lovely review sorry to hear about the fridge freezing everything have since turned them down. Regarding the sleeping bags we do have some bigger adult bags if required and heater in the pods if cold. Hope to see you again soon Sandra

Everything was excellent, couldn't ask for better. Even the small details, like the leaflets for places to go while you stay. The wood that is given to you at no extra charge.

The fact that everything was all nice and tidy and clean, there was no dirt or anything. Even the animals that were there like the horse that was very friendly and you could go and pet. the parking is very good also.

Definitely needs a bigger sign at the end of the drive and also maybe a sign at the beginning of the lane

Local attractions

As well as Gulliver's Kingdom and Alton Towers (well, after Gulliver's Kingdom and Alton Towers), kids of a certain trainspotting disposition might like a puff around the National Tramway Museum, set in the period village of Crich Tramway Village. Trams are here to chuff along on, there are woodland walks and a nature trail, and indoors has exhibits on 100 years of tram history as well as the interactive displays of the award-winning Stephenson Discovery Centre.

As long as you don't utter the words 'stately home' too soon, kids should also like a day at Chatsworth House, where there's a farmyard and zipwiring, and Bolsover Castle, (30 minutes), the spectacular 17th-century fort with regular kid-friendly events. Somewhat more grownup times can he had at Haddon Hall, also within 30 minutes.

You must def meander around the small villages of the Peak District while here too, as each are famed for their own individual thing: have tarts at Bakewell (25 minutes), hone your footballing skills at Ashbourne (40 minutes) and see the spas of Buxton, 45 minutes away.

Must see

  • Arkwright's Cromford Mills (3.7 miles)
  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (3.9 miles)
  • Chatsworth (7.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Winster Market House (6.4 miles)
