Lane Down To Slate House Farm

General

  • Quiet and spacious site on the edge of the Peak District National Park
  • Ensuite pods each with kitchen, double bed and TV and DVD player
  • Eight miles from Gullivers Kingdom and 10 from Chatsworth House

Stake your claim for a prolonged stay at the spectacular Peak District pod place of Slate House Farm, a small countryside site set on a working farm nine miles from Chesterfield. Although small and never crowded, this lush site has proved rightly popular with guests, who wax lyrical about its vies, its setting, its facilities and its friendly vibe.

The site has outstanding views over the Derbyshire countryside and is surrounded by ancient market towns, swathes of country estates and walking, cycling and mountain biking trails for intrepid adventurers. Anglers (fly and coarse) can cast off about a mile away; Matlock is within three and a half miles, and it's but a 20-minute drive from the farm to the heady sightseeing of the Heights of Abraham, where strong-minded sorts can bob about the landscape in a cable car.

Slate House Farm is fably set for Peak District family days to suit all flavours too, with famed Chatsworth House within 10 miles and even more famed (to small sorts at least) Gulliver's Kingdom within eight. Alton Towers is just under an hour's drive away.

The pods each have an ensuite bathroom, a small and well-equipped kitchen, double beds with mattresses, and a TV and DVD player. Barbecues and campfires are both allowed on site.

Please note

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Lovely views over Derbyshire .. 4 pods on site which were well spaced out with outside seating and a fire pit.. When we arrived the pod was toasty warm with tea, coffee and fresh milk the fridge also a packet of marshmallows and wood for the fire pit. We were extremely lucky to have the whole site to ourselves for 2 nights.

    Disliked:

not really a dislike ... however we found the bed very uncomfortable... but then it is glamping!

Our first time staying in a camping pod and we all had a great time. It was big enough for myself and 2 children aged 5 and 7 years old. Nice touch of having marshmallows there as well.

It's in a great location to explore numerous places nearby. We visited Hardwick Hall, Bolsover Castle and Heights of Abraham and loads of fun.

Also I was really impressed with the cleanliness of the pod.

    Lovely owners, very helpful

Would of liked to know the bed situation eg foam bed for 4th person, and couple of chairs for outside, not just the picnic bench- would bring camping chairs next time :)

From the manager...

Hi Sarah, thank you so much for your review of our site. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay.

The pods can comfortably sleep 2 adults in the double bed. The seating area doubles as a bed for one child and there is a pull out z bed for a second child under the seating area.

Sorry that there was no outside chairs we will be getting some extra seating so hopefully you wont need to bring your camp chairs next time! :)

Well equipped, not overlooked by other 3 pods, so peaceful.

    Disliked:

Bed a bit hard but got an ok night sleep. Would have been helpful to have wifi as,
although we were there to switch off from the world (highly recommended) we needed to get online for an urgent work skype call and no wifi to connect to. No major as tethered to phone which has decent signal

From the manager...

Hi, thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.

I'm sorry that you found the beds weren't to your standard. We had new mattresses before opening again after the lockdown, they are very subjective so it's hard to get it right for everyone's tastes.

The site is advertised as not having WiFi but we are pleased you managed to resolve your issues.

Local attractions

As well as Gulliver's Kingdom and Alton Towers (well, after Gulliver's Kingdom and Alton Towers), kids of a certain trainspotting disposition might like a puff around the National Tramway Museum, set in the period village of Crich Tramway Village. Trams are here to chuff along on, there are woodland walks and a nature trail, and indoors has exhibits on 100 years of tram history as well as the interactive displays of the award-winning Stephenson Discovery Centre.

As long as you don't utter the words 'stately home' too soon, kids should also like a day at Chatsworth House, where there's a farmyard and zipwiring, and Bolsover Castle, (30 minutes), the spectacular 17th-century fort with regular kid-friendly events. Somewhat more grownup times can he had at Haddon Hall, also within 30 minutes.

You must def meander around the small villages of the Peak District while here too, as each are famed for their own individual thing: have tarts at Bakewell (25 minutes), hone your footballing skills at Ashbourne (40 minutes) and see the spas of Buxton, 45 minutes away.

Must see

  • Arkwright's Cromford Mills (6.0 kilometres)
  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (6.2 kilometres)
  • Chatsworth (12.0 kilometres)

National Trust
