What customers say

This is a popular, well-maintained site with excellent facilities, particularly the large children's play area and clean swimming pool, which are highlights for families. It's praised for its stunning Peak District location, with direct access to the Tissington Trail, and friendly, helpful staff. While most visitors have a positive experience, some noted that toilet and shower blocks are a distance from certain pitches and could benefit from modernisation.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Easy Location
Great for walks & exploring
Onsite park & swimming pool great for the kids
Site is clean

Disliked Non Electric Camping was on a hill, this made it a very uncomfortable & impossible stay. Whilst sleeping you was sliding in your sleeping bags, eating & drinking at a table was impossible due to the plates/cups sliding on the table.
There is no toilet/shower block for the non electric campers and you have to walk 5 minutes to the main faculties - not suitable with children especially late at night/early morning. Ended up leaving a day early. Sadly won’t be returning.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Very clean and tidy. Toilet/shower facilities good. Really good park area fir children.

Disliked Washing up facilities not central. Quite a walk for a lot of the pitches. Dog walk good but chased by cows and no warning signs about cows. Pitch we were in was very uneven. Expected even pitch at the price we paid

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Family friendly site. Located in lovely part of Derbyshire with good local walks.
Loved the swimming pool, granddaughter especially loved the play area.
Friendly staff and well stocked shop.

Disliked I was disappointed that we weren’t pitched near family as requested on booking and unfortunately we were in separate fields. Which meant mealtimes were bit of a challenge.
Only one washing up facility and one toilet block- which ran out of paper towels and bin was overflowing.
Not level grass pitches.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Ideal spot for the Tissington Trail, good facilities, and a mix of pitches. The pitches were slightly close together, but even when busy this was generally not a problem.

Disliked It was the school holidays and there were lots of kids running around, and messing about, as kids do. They were pretty well-behaved, but some were rushing around the site on bikes or scooters, and not properly paying attention to other people or site traffic. The only slight nuisance were a couple of kids using the ramp leading to the shower block for skateboard practice, whilst their parents were watching and not saying anything.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked The staff were very friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. Special thanks to Mandy for bringing me an electric kettle! I really liked the well kept play area for the children, they loved it, and my children also loved swimming at the pool. The bell tent we stayed in was lovely, the beds were comfy and little things had been thought of - storage bench for storing food items, electric hook up, a light which you can attach to the central pole of the tent, small table and board so you can have your breakfast in bed, and a bench with storage to keep shoes tidy. The tent was immaculate and we would stay in one again.

Disliked The bell tents are new to the site and for convenience at present there are two portaloos in close proximity - this is a great idea but I think the site needs to consider moving them further away from the tents as they are too close - they smell awful! That is the only thing we disliked! I can see why they are there - they just need to be further down the lower end of the field! A simple pot wash area would also be great nearer these tents, otherwise it’s a fair walk away.

Bell tent (four person)

Liked Ashbourne Heights has always been a favorite camping location for us as a family and we would recommend anyone staying. After trying out electric and non electric tent pitches we tried out the new bell tents and they didn’t let us down! The decoration inside is beautiful and the location is perfect for getting onto the Tissington Trail. There were Porter loos close by but the shower and toilet block was a 5 minute walk at best! Very peaceful and as always a great stay! Thank you.

Local attractions

The amount of antics available at Alton Towers near Ashbourne Heights might turn grownups grey among the thrill rides, river rapids and other heady highlights of the country’s biggest theme park. You’ll ensure Very Good Behaviour Indeed if you take the family on to Gulliver’s Kingdom at Matlock Bath, designed to keep all ages busy/tired out for later (beware the nerf guns). Other energetic Peak District pastimes include watersports, laser tag, climbing, caving and zipwiring; find out where’s what at Ashbourne’s tourist information centre, which is practised in all things Peak. More peacefully, the Peak District has a high amount of culture and heritage to explore: National Trust houses and estates, the old spa towns of Matlock and Buxton, museums of all sorts, prehistoric cave paintings, three vintage railways and aeons more. Lead mining was a main industry here from Roman times until recently and info on the industry can be mined at the Peak District Mining Museum at Matlock. Bolsover Castle, founded in the 12th century, has regular events to tempt the kids, such as exhibitions on torture for the gruesomely minded, an indoor riding school, and a theatrical room just for little darlings.
