Peaceful park

  • Peaceful woodland park 10 minutes' drive from Wokingham centre
  • An hour's drive from Oxford, the New Forest and the south coast
  • Next door to a lake and country park for fishing and walks
Settle in for a stay at Wokingham’s California Chalet and Touring Park and you’ll be in good historical company: the park’s location was once part of Windsor Forest and a fave hunting ground of the Tudor royals. These days the five-acre site has been set up as a peaceful woodland park, with heaps of space for a quiet family break. Hunting is long gone, but neighbouring Longmoor Lake is a fab place for a spot of fishing: carp, pike, tench, roach and perch are up for grabs if you’ve got the relevant rod licence. Also just next door is California Country Park, a 100-acre park with wildlife trails, a playground, picnic areas, paddling pool and a cosy café for daytime eats. For further foodie needs, a pub, chip shop and supermarket are a five-minute drive away. If you’re looking to venture a little further afield, Wokingham’s well placed for exploring the attractions of Berkshire and beyond – with a drive of an hour or so you can be wandering around Oxford, spotting ponies in the New Forest or taking in the sea air on the south coast. Facilities on site are kept minimal to preserve the peaceful vibe, but all the essentials are in place: a laundry room (with clothes drying area), an outdoor washing-up area and a well-appointed toilet block with accessible facilities, hot showers and useful bits and bobs like razor points. Staff make a point of keeping an eye on this last to make sure it's always in fine fettle for guests.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (premium)

Liked The trees and location to a park and water.
The chap that cleaned the toilets; thankless task but he did it with a cheery smile and words. Thanks mate! There was another chap who was involved with some new pitches. If he wasn’t the sites he should have been. The arrival info was great. Map also great. Price was good physical location good but be careful of narrow roads. Park cafe even though not yours was handy. And good but was wasp city in the heat.
I’ll put in here the things that would not warrant a dislike but did play a part in our visit.
Very narrow road to the gate. Not your fault as it’s tree limited but with a big van meeting someone nose to nose it unpleasant
Access gate failing. Three times in our visit once swiping and scraping my wife’s hand. You need a more robust system.
I think the pitches are too close; the size is ok and connection points fine but felt the people opposite were in our seating area in the van and the ones to the side could feel every fart…
The roads; rubbish really needs proper attention even with the sensible speed limit let’s just say it was a rattly journey.
And when it rained (and boy it did) it flooded.
Not in your control but the amount of dog faeces was not great; we were close to a seasonal Winnebago that wasn’t occupied but some of your visits thought it was ok to let their dogs just go there.
Because of the closeness noise from other residents was higher than I’d expect. A chap in a flash BMW in a chalet went to get food at midnight and his fancy exhaust woke everyone. I dunno how you deal with that
But; getting past that and the dislikes - with the trees the wildlife it was good. When the sun shone it was really good for recharging our spirits

Disliked Shower block needs money spending on it. Drainage wasn’t great. Other users; don’t wear mud covered trainers in the shower enclosure!
I have an 8ft wide 20 ft long van. It was a challenge to get into the pitch made easier because opposite pitches were empty but so bloody difficult getting off my pitch and turning right because of the lack of space to turn. If you have a big van I’d not risk it.
You really do need to spend some money on the park upgrade the toilet block, sort the roads and warn bookers with big vans it will be difficult.

Liked Good pre comms, great location, close to play park which the kids loved, handy for Wokingham, good local walks, good amenities on site

Disliked Pitch was long and narrow despite being the ‘large option’ meaning we had to pitch awning on the grass

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (premium)

Liked Reception team were lovely and extremely helpful.
Fully serviced pitch was perfect - nice not to have to move the Motorhome once all set up.
It was peaceful at night and there are lots of nice walks on the doorstep.
Cafe next door had a good menu. We had catered so we didn’t eat there but will definitely give it a go when we stay again.

Disliked Nothing major - some upgrading going on during the day but, upgrades are good!

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely feedback! We're really pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay — especially that our reception team made a great impression and that the fully serviced pitch suited your needs so well. It's great to know you appreciated the peaceful setting and the beautiful local walks too.

We're currently making a number of improvements across the site to enhance our guests' experience. While this does mean a bit of daytime activity, we're doing our best to keep any disruption to a minimum, and we really appreciate your understanding.

We’re glad you noticed the upgrades and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (premium)

Liked It’s very peaceful and to be woken by the birds morning song in the surrounding countryside and the sounds of laughter from adults and children through the day and a leisurely walk around the lake with ducks and swans with a children’s playground and a cafe to sit and rest. It’s also convenient that it’s not far from the town centre for shopping and night life. Highly recommended

Disliked Wi fi was hit and miss but a boaster will compensate

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (premium)

Liked Position of campsite adjacent to California Country Park with easy access to lovely walks around lakes, wetland and woodland. Fully-serviced hard-standing pitches, code operated gates adding a measure of security, well kept grounds and powerful hot showers. Plan to refurbish shower block for 2026 season. The receptionists were accommodating and allowed us to re-locate to a larger pitch to facilitate the use of our sun canopy.

Disliked Lack of drying space/chair in shower cubicle. Whole area got wet. Division between shower area and dressing area may help.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch (premium)

Liked The position of the site was ideal for us, we were visiting friends in the area.
The country park around the site was very nice as we have two dogs, they liked it too !

Disliked The fully serviced pitch we had (21) was extremely small, if we had put up an awning or sun canopy there was no room for the car. The pitches on that side were very close together too.
We were only there as a stopover for two nights, so it wasn’t an issue for us, but for anyone else it could be.
A lot of the caravans on there also seemed to be seasonal pitches.
Facilities could do with an update, even after cleaning floor still looked dirty.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

We’re really pleased to hear you enjoyed the location of the site and the surrounding country park — it’s a lovely area for dog walks, and we’re glad your four-legged friends enjoyed it too!

We do appreciate your comments regarding the fully serviced pitch and the shower block. We're aware that some of our pitches are on the smaller side, particularly on that section of the site, and we’re currently reviewing our layout as part of planned future improvements. Refurbishment of the shower and toilet facilities is also something we're actively considering, and feedback like yours helps us prioritise these updates.

We hope to welcome you back in the future and provide an even better experience next time.

Liked Really lovely site in a beautiful setting

Disliked Paid a lot of money for our pitch and had to share it with a Mercedes estate which was parked in the pitch when we arrived!! Couldn’t locate who it belonged to and no-one came out to move it when we were arrived. Lots of long term residents, so believe it belonged to one of them but feel
a little aggrieved that we paid so much money for half a pitch and could barely open our Motorhome door to get in and out - and certainly couldn’t sit outside our Moho!
Emailed the site but no response (or offer of half our fee returned!!!)

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're pleased to hear you enjoyed the site and its beautiful setting.

We're very sorry to learn about the issue you experienced on arrival. Unfortunately, we did not receive your email at the time, which is why we were unable to respond or take immediate action. We do include an emergency contact number in the arrival information and on our reception door specifically for situations like this, so we can assist right away — had we been made aware via that number, we would have done our utmost to resolve the issue promptly.

We completely understand your frustration at not having full use of the pitch you paid for and the impact this had on your stay. Please rest assured that this is not the standard of experience we aim to deliver. Your comments have been noted, and we will be reviewing how we can better manage such situations going forward, especially when it involves other guests vehicles.

Thank you again for your feedback — it’s invaluable in helping us improve.
