California Chalet and Touring Park: Adjacent lake

General

  • Peaceful woodland park 10 minutes' drive from Wokingham centre
  • An hour's drive from Oxford, the New Forest and the south coast
  • Next door to a lake and country park for fishing and walks

Settle in for a stay at Wokingham’s California Chalet and Touring Park and you’ll be in good historical company: the park’s location was once part of Windsor Forest and a fave hunting ground of the Tudor royals.

These days the five-acre site has been set up as a peaceful woodland park, with heaps of space for a quiet family break. Hunting is long gone, but neighbouring Longmoor Lake is a fab place for a spot of fishing: carp, pike, tench, roach and perch are up for grabs if you’ve got the relevant rod licence.

Also just next door is California Country Park, a 100-acre park with wildlife trails, a playground, picnic areas, paddling pool and a cosy café for daytime eats. For further foodie needs, a pub, chip shop and supermarket are a five-minute drive away.

If you’re looking to venture a little further afield, Wokingham’s well placed for exploring the attractions of Berkshire and beyond – with a drive of an hour or so you can be wandering around Oxford, spotting ponies in the New Forest or taking in the sea air on the south coast.

Facilities on site are kept minimal to preserve the peaceful vibe, but all the essentials are in place: a laundry room (with clothes drying area), an outdoor washing-up area and a well-appointed toilet block with accessible facilities, hot showers and useful bits and bobs like razor points. Staff make a point of keeping an eye on this last to make sure it's always in fine fettle for guests.

Great location, away from traffic and city, very in with the nature. Had a wonderful member of staff who was kind and patient and helpful when our foot pump wouldn’t work so lent us another one. Very very happy the loos were constantly kept clean and locks worked and never blocked up and loo roll was always there. Showers were lovely and warm. And the view from the lake was stunning especially in the mornings seeing the sunrise and all the animals near by was a beautiful sight.

    Disliked:

Not a lot but maybe that the showers didn’t stay on long had to press the button every few seconds but I know a lot of camping sites are like that. Also the paper towels ran out very quickly and was empty. But overall nothing bad. Also for my partner the speed bumps are not for low cars, he has a Nissan 350Z and went slower than 5mph and still bottomed out his car but only on the left side when leaving, the other side was fine :)

Added as side note purely for the this review page: not being able to upload photos where it says too, keeps freezing up and deleting my review so having to keep rewriting my review. So unfortunately unable to show my photos of the lake and views I got

Excellent facilities, friendly staff, clean site, staff very helpful, very convenient for amenities and other places to visit.

    Disliked:

Lack of hot water in showers, ladies loos not cleaned as often as the managment thought but they were on it very quickly when it was pointed out. The very noisy other guests. I struggled with the loud music from the camper next to me playing until midnight, the shouting and yelling from the chalets opposite until late at night and just the general lack of consideration for other families. The rest of the site was very peaceful so I think it was just the camping and chalet corner.

Clean chalets, nice staff and lovely location07/28/2021

Clean chalet and quiet area. The lodge we stayed was a metre from the lake with no railings. Excellent for nature watching from the chalets - we saw a lot of wildlife but you will need to be extremely careful with small children. Some of the chalets were not next to the lake so check before booking. The mattresses on the top bunks didn't follow safety rules. They were too tall for the bunk bed railings. They would not be suitable for any child who moves about in the night. The park staff kindly brought us a replacement mattress for part of our stay but said no one had problems before. I doubt they will change them in future. There is a lovely playground on the opposite part of the lake and nice walks. A great place to stay overall.

Rubbish disposal difficult with industrial bins and no apparent recycling. Toilets good but not many cubicles. Showers disappointing, too small with no changing space or room to put a stool in the cubicle. Water pressure too low.

Local attractions

There’s plenty of scope for fresh air in California Country Park (right next to the site), but if you fancy stretching your legs a little more, you’ve got plenty of choice: the South Downs National Park, New Forest and the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all within an hour’s drive for scenic walks and bike rides. Golfers can pick from three courses within a 15-minute drive.

On fine days, take the kids to meet the friendly animals at Lockey Farm, 10 minutes away. For less clement days, the Museum of Berkshire Aviation, Skiplex Indoor Ski Slopes, Coral Reef waterpark and Gravity Force trampoline park are all about a 20-minute drive away.

For a bit of culture and history, it’s half an hour or so to drive to Windsor Castle, or around an hour to Oxford for wanders around the university’s colleges and punting along the river.
