California Chalet and Touring Park: Camping pods

General

  • Peaceful woodland park 10 minutes' drive from Wokingham centre
  • An hour's drive from Oxford, the New Forest and the south coast
  • Next door to a lake and country park for fishing and walks

Settle in for a stay at Wokingham’s California Chalet and Touring Park and you’ll be in good historical company: the park’s location was once part of Windsor Forest and a fave hunting ground of the Tudor royals.

These days the five-acre site has been set up as a peaceful woodland park, with heaps of space for a quiet family break. Hunting is long gone, but neighbouring Longmoor Lake is a fab place for a spot of fishing: carp, pike, tench, roach and perch are up for grabs if you’ve got the relevant rod licence.

Also just next door is California Country Park, a 100-acre park with wildlife trails, a playground, picnic areas, paddling pool and a cosy café for daytime eats. For further foodie needs, a pub, chip shop and supermarket are a five-minute drive away.

If you’re looking to venture a little further afield, Wokingham’s well placed for exploring the attractions of Berkshire and beyond – with a drive of an hour or so you can be wandering around Oxford, spotting ponies in the New Forest or taking in the sea air on the south coast.

Facilities on site are kept minimal to preserve the peaceful vibe, but all the essentials are in place: a laundry room (with clothes drying area), an outdoor washing-up area and a well-appointed toilet block with accessible facilities, hot showers and useful bits and bobs like razor points. Staff make a point of keeping an eye on this last to make sure it's always in fine fettle for guests.

Chalet was stuck in a corner out the way surrounded by hedges right next to the lake with no sunlight. Rats constantly around. Tv so small you could barely see it when sitting down. Wooden Bunk beds so unsteady that the 4 people sleeping on them were unable to sleep for the entire week due to it shaking and worrying that it would simply collapse. No WiFi in the chalet so unable to work

Lovely, clean facilities. Close to shops & attractions. Quiet, safe site & having it be within the country park was excellent, the kids could play & have access to the paddling pool whenever they wanted. The out of hours check in was ideal as well, it made the end of a long, difficult drive an absolte breeze. There were also other parks nearby, as well as it being close to theme parks, we were never lost for things to do. We loved it & would definitely stay again.

Showers. There was nowhere to put your clothing etc in the cubicles without it getting wet. The water kept running cold and you would have to stand in the water from the next door cubicles.
