  • Quiet lakeside site in 100 acres of Bedfordshire countryside
  • Bedford 15 minutes’ drive; Santa Pod Raceway 35 minutes
  • Bar and restaurant (opening times vary) by the lake
If quiet and family-friendly are two things you look for when picking a place to stay, you'll most definitely want to check out Box End Park. Set on a lakeside in 100 acres of scenic Bedfordshire countryside, its flat and grassy pitches are designed for families, first-time campers and outdoor lovers (and no groups are allowed). Make the most of the two spring-fed lakes, where there's all sorts to fill your spare hours (at an additional fee; a booking is required): a giant aqua park, cable wakeboarding and paddleboarding. If you fancy doing some breaststroke, you're also welcome to book onto a lifeguarded session (wild swimming is not permitted). Back on dry land, you could sign up for disc golf for an additional fee too. On-site amenities include heated toilets, hot showers and outdoor washing-up sinks, as well as additional showers in the main clubhouse. When you're ready to refuel, head over to the bar and restaurant (open Tuesday to Sunday; closed Mondays). There's also a seasonal café to check out (just take note that its opening times do vary). If you'd rather flip your own food, you're welcome to have a barbecue as long as it's raised off the ground to protect the grass. To keep things quiet and family-friendly, no noise is permitted after 10.30pm at Box End Park. Guests are also expected to keep noise to a minimum throughout the daytime and take all camping equipment and belongings home. The historic market town of Bedford is only a 15-minute drive away, with plenty of pubs, restaurants and shops to look around.

Electric grass pitch

Liked The campsite is in a beautiful, spacious location, with good-sized pitches and a generally peaceful atmosphere. However, in the mornings, you can hear the noise from cars travelling along the road behind the campsite, particularly from the camping area.

Disliked The mobile phone signal is quite weak, and the internet connection is also poor. Although the campsite advertised Wi-Fi, there was no Wi-Fi signal at all around the pitches during our stay.

The number of toilets and showers also seems too limited for the size of the campsite. When the site is fully occupied, I believe these facilities would be insufficient for the number of guests.

From the manager: Hi there,

Thank you so much for your lovely10/10 review and for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We’re really pleased you enjoyed the spacious pitches and peaceful setting.

As you mentioned, depending on the direction of the wind, you can sometimes hear a little traffic from the road behind the campsite, particularly in the mornings. It can vary quite a bit depending on the weather and wind direction.

We’re sorry to hear you had difficulty with the Wi-Fi during your stay. We do offer free Wi-Fi around the campsite, which is generally suitable for WhatsApp messaging and basic use. The Wi-Fi code is included in the camping pack, and we also have a premium-speed option available for guests who need a faster or more reliable connection.

We’re also always happy to help during your stay, so if you’re having any issues with the Wi-Fi, facilities or anything else, please do let us know at the time. We’ll always do our best to help and make your stay as enjoyable as possible.

Thanks again for your feedback — we really appreciate it and hope to welcome you back in the future!

Best wishes,
the Box End Park Team

Local attractions

One of the highlights at the Forest Centre and Millennium Country Park (15 minutes’ drive) is the Wetlands Nature Reserve, inhabited by shrews, otters and butterflies. A circular trail skirts the lake (with bird hides), going past woodlands and reedbeds where you might spot different birds depending on the season. Falcons, owls and eagles are among the winged residents at Herrings Green Activity Farm and Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes). Here, in addition to witnessing flying displays (accompanied by an informative but entertaining commentary), visitors can have their picture taken with the birds. Santa Pod Raceway (35 minutes) is a racetrack with a lively programme of events: from modified and classic car shows, to what they call ‘Run What You Brung’ days, where they open the track to the general public and their cars (or bikes). The place is best known for drag racing, a thrilling acceleration contest over a short distance.
