  • Spacious park spread across 500 acres of Kent countryside
  • Five minutes' drive from Paddock Wood station and trains to London
  • Access to the River Medway for canoeing and fishing
Set in 500 acres of open fields and woodland, The Hop Farm is a huge site with plenty for guests to get stuck into. First of all, the river Medway flows through the park – so arrive by canoe if you like, or stick around on site for fishing and kayaking. Second, it has a friendly on-site pub with a nice and familiar menu full of pub classics. What else is there to like? Well, the site has a stunning backdrop of historic oast houses, the largest collection of Victorian-era oast houses in the world. It's easy to get to, being just a five-minute drive from Paddock Wood station and trains to London. Local shops and amenities are five minutes away by car too. Kent (aka The Garden of England) has many beaches, historic towns, forests, castles and stately homes (and gardens). The very scenic town of Royal Tunbridge Wells is 15 minutes' drive away from The Hop Farm. Tonbridge, a market town with a castle, shops and restaurants, is also 15 minutes away. The on-site facilities include a modern shower and toilet block. Dogs are welcome on site for an additional fee. You're welcome to bring your own barbecues and raised firepits to use here, as long as the ground conditions are good. The on-site shop also rents out firepits and stocks firewood (both are limited, so subject to availability).

Powered cement/asphalt and grass campsite

Liked Large open spaces

Disliked Insufficient shower/ toilet facilities for size of site. Lovely lady cleaner worked hard to keep to keep them clean but facilities very tired with visible black mould.

Had to ask that dog bins be emptied as several overflowing for some days. Generally the site felt uncared for.

No attempt to enforce any rules eg dogs on leads, no fires etc. scorch marks and debris on grass - plentiful evidence of fires.

Main road very noisy, made worse by ‘motorbike races’ taking place between roundabouts

From the manager: I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay.
We are permitted to take 200 pitches for the facilities we have. During your stay the first 4 nights we had between 2 and 28 pitches your last night being this last Friday( Bank Holiday 22nd May) we had almost our full quota.
The dog bins were due to be emptied on the Wednesday that you came into the office and reported it.
We hand out a copy of the campsite rules when checking-in and these are also on pitch-up when looking to book we do enforce these rules.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked What a great campsite, and amazing staff! The place is huge and when we went (4 women, 3 dogs, 4 campervans) we had a big field to ourselves. I had some problems with my van and Sue on reception even came out to help push me to bump start the van. Amazing. We didn’t bring kayaks/SUP’s but could have. Maybe next time!

Disliked I’d have liked a few more loos and showers- we didn’t have a problem but I suspect in high season there’s quite a queue, and quite a walk.

From the manager: I am surprised you found your stay so unacceptable and instead of notifying us whilst here you stayed your 3 nights.
The majority of our guests comment on how lovely and clean the showers and toilets are.
Before booking on Pitch-up it states what we have on and near the site.

From the manager: Thank you for choosing to stay with us.
I spoke to a parent of the children on the bikes asking for the bikes to be locked away and not used again it was unfortunate they did not have the sense to leave such bikes at home.
We look forward to your next visit.

Excellent for anyone off grid not needing the toilet block.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked It could easily be one of the best sites in england if they spent a bit of money on it. It is massive, and on a grass non-electric pitch there are fields you can have to yourself. Its right on the river medway for easy access and its great for groups.

Disliked Toilet blocks aren't cleaned regularly and are in very poor condition. The site doesn't have any management so people can be seen driving over 40mph across the fields.

Local attractions

Kent has 350 miles of coastline, with watersports and those famous white cliffs at Dover. Whitstable and Herne Bay are popular with oyster eaters, anglers and jetskiers. There are umpteen options for families in the area including play centres, farms, horse riding and days out. Try Howletts Wild Animal Park in Canterbury, home to gorillas and operating experiences for visitors such as junior ranger days. Penshurst Place and Gardens has historical re-enactments, children’s trails, an adventure playground and special events during the school holidays. Both Leeds Castle at Maidstone and Hever Castle near Edenbridge are family-friendly and packed with activities and events. There’s a Go Ape! at Leeds Castle as well as two mazes, boat trips, falconry displays, underground grotto and the Knights' Realm Playground, a scale model of the castle (and a golf course and golf instruction for the grownups). Hever, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, has a yew maze and water maze, award-winning gardens and a topiary. Back with the big folk, the old market towns of Tonbridge, Maidstone, Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Wells are close by for shopping and sightseeing. Bluewater shopping centre is in Greenhithe (rival Lakewater is just over the Essex border at West Thurrock).
