The Hop Farm: Looking across part of the hardstanding area and some of the grass optional electric pitches

General

  • Next door to popular family attraction The Hop Farm family park
  • Five minutes' drive from Paddock Wood station and trains to London
  • Access to the River Medway for canoeing and fishing

The Hop Farm is a huge camping and touring park in 500 acres of open fields and woodland, next door to Kent's popular family attraction the Hop Farm Family Park.

The River Medway flows through the park – so you can arrive by canoe if you like, or stick around on site for fishing and kayaking. If you'd rather arrive by more conventional means, there's easy access from the A228 (it's about a 15-minute drive from Tonbridge) and Paddock Wood train station is a handy five minutes' drive away.

The farm is also home to the Oast Village, the biggest collection of oast (old hop kilning) houses in the world – they're worth a wander around to get a glimpse of times gone by. Local shops and amenities are five minutes away.

For days out clearly you'll want to start with The Hop Farm itself – pop next door for family-friendly rides and shows, an adventure play area and plenty of cute animals to coo over. If you're sticking around a little longer, this site makes a handy base for trips to Kent's many fab beaches, castles and animal parks.

The spaces were well spread out. The site was not too busy and nice walks along the river to pubs and villages. lots of open space and pretty forest nearby with blue bells.

    Disliked:

During COVID all the toilets and showers were closed (expected) so unable to comment on these facilities. There is not much for children to do - lacks a play area. I appreciate there is a kids play area nearby at the Hop Farm but entry costs £12 for a family of four and not accessible at all times.

Walks and the country side view. Lady in reception was very nice and helpful and the pitch was a decent size for my 7m Motorhome. I particularly enjoyed the regiment free atmosphere; unlike some other ‘club’ sites. However.........

    Disliked:

There was nowhere to ditch my Motorhome waste water. Yes, I could have collected it in a water hog but that is not the point of a Moho which collects its own waste. Because it was the first weekend of ‘freedom’, the noise from the Open Air entertainment was invasive. We are early to bed but couldn’t sleep because of the constant car horn honking. The shows themselves weren’t a problem to be honest; just the honking. Perhaps patrons could be asked not to do it past 9?
On another note, to be asked to take your waste home is unacceptable. I can only think that the farm is saving on Biffa collection as there is absolutely no reason why domestic waste which is handled by machinery, could be infectious to humans.
Despite the above, I would stay again. If there is a Motorhome waste point, perhaps I could be advised next time?

We camped in one of the open fields. The facilities were not open due to Covid, but we were self contained. The reception was both friendly and helpful and the information gained from this was the reason why this was our second stay within the month. There are many footpaths crossing the site with one running alongside the River Medway close by, we were able to walk to Tonbridge (around 8 miles) along here, a lovely walk. We are likely to stay here again.

Local attractions

Once the kids let you off site, Garden of England Kent has beaches, historic towns, forests and more castles, stately homes (and gardens) open to the public than anywhere else in the country. If this isn't enough, Paddock Wood railway station is five minutes’ drive from The Hop Farm for a train to London, less than an hour away. Dover is within 60 miles for a day trip or onward travel to France.

Kent has 350 miles of coastline, with Blue Flag beaches, watersports and those famous white cliffs at Dover. Eight of the 11 Blue Flaggers are in Ramsgate, Margate and Broadstairs; Whitstable and Herne Bay are also popular with oyster eaters, anglers and jetskiers.

There are umpteen options for families in the area including play centres, farms, horse riding and days out. Howletts Wild Animal Park at Canterbury has the biggest group of looked-after gorillas in the world and experiences for visitors such as junior ranger days. Penshurst Place and Gardens has historical re-enactments, children’s trails, an adventure playground and special events during the school holidays.

Both Leeds Castle at Maidstone and Hever Castle near Edenbridge are family-friendly and packed with activities and events. There’s a Go Ape at Leeds Castle as well as two mazes, boat trips, falconry displays, underground grotto and the Knights' Realm Playground, a scale model of the castle (and a golf course and golf instruction for the grownups). Hever, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, has a yew maze and water maze, award-winning gardens and a topiary.

Back with the big folk, the old market towns of Tonbridge, Maidstone, Sevenoaks and Tunbridge Wells are close by for shopping and sightseeing. Bluewater shopping centre is in Greenhithe (rival Lakeside is just over the Essex border at West Thurrock).
