  • Peaceful and family-friendly Glamorgan site bordering the River Taff
  • Castell Coch 10 minutes’ drive; Cardiff city centre 20 minutes
  • Communal kitchen and modern facilities; pub 20 minutes’ walk
Fancy a Glamorgan base with easy access to river fishing or wild swimming amid ancient woodland and peaceful valleys? Introducing Garth Glamping, 20 minutes’ drive from Cardiff city centre and bordering the River Taff at the foot of Garth Hill. Here you also have several fields – each framed by oak and beech – to explore, where you can exercise any four-legged pals and let the kids run around generally being kids. Helpful on-site facilities at this peaceful waterside spot include a pristine modern toilet block and shower enclosure a short stroll from the pitches, and a bottled water station for refilling your flasks and coolers. You'll also have use of a fridge/freezer, hob, kettle and gas barbecue in the communal kitchen area, where there’s a full set of crockery, cutlery, pots and pans and washing-up supplies – in short, everything you need for whipping up a simple supper or firing up the barbecue for an alfresco feast. When you’re ready to explore, follow marked woodland trails or wander quiet country lanes in the surrounding farmland. Cycle hire can be arranged locally if you’re after two-wheeled adventures, but when you’d rather simply sink into a deckchair with a glass of local craft cider and listen for the tawny owls, well, that’s all good too. There’s a pub 20 minutes’ walk from the site gates, and another one, plus a few shops, in the village of Pentyrch (10 minutes’ drive).

Bell tent

Liked Everything about this place is stunning and well thought out, we stayed in one of the pre-set up bell tents and the site is small for the moment but i got the impression its going to slowly be expanded upon, beautiful location and run by extremely friendly and helpful people, its "glamping" but its not over the top so it still feels like actual camping with extra comforts as opposed to an outdoor hotel (which is exactly what i would be looking for) there are train tracks very close with regular trains but they were barely noticeable and certainly not a bother, will absolutely be recommending and will be going back should the opportunity arises

Disliked a little out the way, there is a train station about a 20 min walk away and ubers can get there, not a dislike just a little awkward if you dont own your own transport and feel peckish at 11pm and didnt think to get supplies like us :P, many bugs... but its camping in the countryside so what do you expect :)

From the manager: Thank you so much for this fantastic and detailed review! I’m really happy to hear you loved the bell tent, the setting, and the balance between camping and added comforts, that’s exactly the experience we’re aiming for.

You’re right that the site is still small for now, but we do have plans to expand gradually while keeping that relaxed, intimate feel. And thank you for mentioning the trains and travel notes, it’s really helpful for other guests to know, hence the earplugs too!

I completely understand the challenges if you don’t have your own transport (and those late-night snack cravings!). Uber eats do deliver to the farm too! And yes, the bugs are definitely part of the countryside charm!

It means so much to hear you’d recommend us and would like to come back. We’d absolutely love to welcome you again anytime!

No fuss, Easy to get to, super friendly hosts.

Bell tent

Liked Had a lovely time staying here. Really easy way to do a bit of camping without any faff. A lovely taster for the first time visiting Wales. We turned up with nothing but some food and basically had everything we needed for the stay.

Bell tent was comfy, the Pub in town - Gwaelod Y Garth inn was a great recommendation, local ales and great food. The welcome marshmallows were a nice treat in the evening on the fire pit. You get a lovely greeting by a whole field of curious cows as you head down the driveway to the site.

We came in by foot and got the train in from Cardiff. We walked down from Treforest estate station, which was a little more hilly vs coming up from Taffs Well but well worth the walk through the forest and along the river.

Worth keeping in mind that being this easy to get to, means there's the low hum of the A470 near by and trains do run along the ridge behind the tents till just after midnight. But the supplied ear plugs and eye masks work a treat if thats an issue.

There's a little kitchen onsite and with a supply of tea/coffee and bottled water to get you going in the morning. Few families car camping at the other end of the field but we had plenty of space to ourselves. No wifi but had full bars of Mobile data. There were clean toilets and a shower next to the communal area with more being built when we stayed.

Jordan was super friendly and helpful before and during the stay. Would both recommend this place and will definitely be staying here again to do some of the walking paths around Garth hill.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We loved this site , being able to pitch up where you like , the benches that were dotted around and the space for the children and dog to play.
The facilities were always clean and you can hire fire pits. We walked from the site down a riverside path to train and into Cardiff which was great .

Disliked We didn’t dislike anything just points to note as in description is you can hear road traffic at times it didn’t bother us but I saw ear plugs if you needed it .
Toilet / shower - occasional wait but being built currently .

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked If you're after top notch facilities etc this probably isn't for you. If however you just want to unwind in a relaxed environment it definitely is. There is a shower and a WC + some portaloos but they have limited availability due to the possible quantity of people trying to use them. All clean and good when we visited. Would we come again? Definitely.

Disliked Rough track to access site. My lads 1 series had to go very slowly but was definitely possible

Bell tent

Liked What a beautiful site. A perfect little getaway to experience Glamping for the first time.
As a single mum of two young children (5 and 2) I was a little bit nervous at first but I felt safe and relaxed at all times.
The children loved the access to the river, we spent ages throwing rocks in and exploring.
The outdoor games were also a big hit.
Loved how clean the bathroom and kitchen area was.
The bell tent was amazing - plenty of room for us and the beds were very comfortable.
Thank for you for the marshmallows and drinks on arrival!

Disliked Nothing, it was simply wonderful!

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Pleasant surroundings - lovely big, flat field; river close by for swimming/ kayaking etc; very good shower and kitchen facilities with mugs, cutlery and fridge; finding cows grazing in the campsite field in the early morning was fun, but not everyone's cup of tea?!

Disliked Site owner's dog (?) chasing our vehicle all the way onto the site - we were very worried about injuring him and he also jumped up and scratched our vehicle; one shower not enough for a busy field; noise of traffic, but you get used to it

From the manager: Hi there,

Thank you for your feedback, we’re genuinely sorry your stay didn’t meet expectations.

We’re really pleased you enjoyed the peaceful surroundings, the spacious flat field, the river nearby, and the well-equipped facilities, we’ve put a lot of thought into these details, and it’s lovely to know they were appreciated.

Regarding the cows, they had escaped via the river, which was a one-off and has since been fully rectified. This is certainly not the norm and we apologise if it caught you off guard.

As for Lilly, the farm dog. While guests may occasionally encounter her on the drive (this is a working farm, after all), we absolutely do not expect anyone to deal with vehicle damage. We’re very sorry to hear this happened. Please do contact us directly with photos or details, we’d like to resolve this properly. Our personal contact information is shared with every guest upon booking and arrival, so it’s upsetting that we weren’t made aware of this at the time.

It’s incredibly disheartening to receive such a negative review, especially anonymously, without having been given the chance to address the issue in real time. We care deeply about our guests’ experience and to say we’re gutted would be an understatement. As seen in our many other reviews, this isn’t reflective of the usual Garth Glamping experience.

Thank you again for your visit. We really do hope you’ll get in touch so we can sort things properly.

Local attractions

From your pitch, follow waymarked trails up the Garth (20 minutes’ walk) for views over Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. The 55-mile Taff Trail (for walkers and cyclists) passes close by too, so you can follow the scenic section to Pontypridd on largely traffic-free paths alongside the river. Heritage-lovers can tour the extraordinary Castell Coch (10 minutes’ drive), an ornate folly combining a medieval castle with Gothic-Victorian additions, or have a nose around Caerphilly Castle (15 minutes) with its drawbridges and battlements. Also well worth a visit is St Fagans National Museum of History (20 minutes), an open-air folk museum recreating Welsh life through historic buildings and crafts workshops. If the kids aren't taken with all that history, test their wits in themed escape games at Cardiff’s Puzzled Escape Rooms, or take them to Tenpin Cardiff Nantgarw (both 10 minutes) for bowling, arcade games and fast food in the diner. These also make great rainy day choices if the weather turns on you.
