General

  • Peaceful holiday park with fantastic views of Ben Nevis and beyond
  • A five-minute drive from Fort William and the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre
  • Great Glen Way within a 25-minute walk; wifi available on site

The highlight of a trip to the Highlands and Islands? Feasting your eyes on the UK’s tallest mountain range – and that’s exactly what you can do the whole time you’re settling in at the scenic (and aptly named) Ben Nevis Holiday Park.

This well-maintained site in Scotland, set by the River Lochy and with lots of green space for kids to play and grownups to wander, also looks out across the Aonach Mor mountains. It makes a brill base for day trips by car, bike, train or foot in the Lochaber area as it’s just over five minutes’ drive from the centre of Fort William.

Cycling and walking paths are close to this park – including the famed Great Glen Way along the Caledonian Canal (25 minutes’ stroll) – and a selection of shops and restaurants is just down the road. If you’d prefer not to venture far from base to gather supplies, a store on site sells the basics.

Other conveniences at this thoughtfully run park include electric hook-ups, a coin-operated laundry room, clean toilets and showers, and laundry amenities. Families and groups are warmly welcomed here for hiking hols (or restful trips).

Ease of access from the A82 meant finding the site …07/08/2020

Ease of access from the A82 meant finding the site was straightforward and exploring each day was simple. The site is near the banks of a river which is picturesque. The toilet/shower block was maintained very well and cleaned 3 times per day (possibly due to Covid 19 - unsure if this is typical).

    Disliked:

You can hear traffic noise from the main road. More expensive than other sites in the area.

Our main disappointment with the site was that they were carrying out maintenance work on the tent pitches part of the site, in the form of laying a road. This was due to poor drainage meaning cars were getting stuck. However, we were not informed that this work was scheduled to be carried out prior to our arrival, meaning for the entirety of our stay we had construction vehicles and other equipment working literally outside our tent. Not what you want when you drive for 9 hours for a quiet week away in the tent. I would have expected a courtesy call or email from the site as soon as they knew this disruptive work was going to take place to give us a chance to make alternative arrangements. I would 100% have chosen not to stay on this site had I known this was happening. I provided this feedback to the management at the time who responded that it was an unavoidable emergency measure due to the drainage issues. My response to this is that such circumstances are understandable - but we felt 100% misled and should have been told before we arrived that this was the case. As such, we will not use this site again and would actively discourage others from staying here too.

Liked what they are doing with the improvements to the caravan/camper van pitches.

    Disliked:

No curtain in the shower cubicle, trouble to keep clothes dry. Other camp sites have a third of the cubicle shielded by a curtain. Its a cheap and simple solution to the problem.
Building roads across the muddy campsite whilst we were there. Build them in the low season please.

Facilities and location were really good. The initial reception staff were really friendly and check in very easy

    Disliked:

We felt pressure to leave early as someone complained about our friends dog.

The dog was anxious and barked more than normal which we totally appreciate could be annoying to those near us.

However the way the member of staff delt with it and how they spoke to my wife and friend we felt was really quite abrupt and just disappointed with the handling of it.

Shame as it really spoilt our weekend so we felt we needed to leave a full day early as we were not at ease with the thought of being asked to leave at any time hanging over us.

Would perhaps still recommend site but not sure how dog friendly the site really is based on the way the situation above with our friends was handled.

    Good location. Clean camp site.

We were told to pitch our tent at the electric tent and caravan area so were not near the main camping area.

    Disliked:

We were put in the wrong area where the electric pitches are but we never asked for this but had to pay extra.
We had to leave in a hurry and as it was pouring rain we did not managed to fit our new camping stove and a camping mat back into our car. I am a single mum with 2 teenagers so we are not that great at packing bulky things into a car.
We ask the owners if they could hold on to them in their storage area (it is a big camping site)until we got back home and get someone to collect it, they were clearly unhappy about this. However they agreed to do it ,reluctantly.
They were not that friendly a host.My daughter`s noticed that quite early on and when asking for tokens for showers they always seemed annoyed.

Local attractions

The owners reckon there’s something for everyone around this site, but walkers and cyclists are especially sorted when it comes to activities. If you’re up for a trek, challenge yourself to one of the trails up Ben Nevis, getting intel on which ones to tackle at the mountain range’s visitor centre, just over five minutes’ drive.

If you’re after a lazier lope, amble along the Caledonian Canal from the locks at Neptune's Staircase (25 minutes’ walk) or get your RDA of exercise by nipping in and out of the shops of Fort William (five minutes’ drive). The town has plenty of stores selling mountaineering kit if you need equipment to try out the more intense pursuits – think skiing and downhill biking – available in the area.

For a family day out, make your way to the Glenfinnan Viaduct (25 minutes’ drive) and see if the kids recognise it from the Harry Potter series – the Hogwarts Express was filmed crossing this oh-so-scenic bridge.

Saving perhaps the best activity till last, top off your trip by paying a visit to the whisky makers at the Ben Nevis Distillery (15 minutes’ walk) for a few drams of one of Scotland’s finest exports.
