Ben Nevis Holiday Park: Highland camping pod

General

  • Peaceful holiday park with fantastic views of Ben Nevis and beyond
  • A five-minute drive from Fort William and the Ben Nevis Visitor Centre
  • Great Glen Way within a 25-minute walk; wifi available on site

The highlight of a trip to the Highlands and Islands? Feasting your eyes on the UK’s tallest mountain range – and that’s exactly what you can do the whole time you’re settling in at the scenic (and aptly named) Ben Nevis Holiday Park.

This well-maintained site in Scotland, set by the River Lochy and with lots of green space for kids to play and grownups to wander, also looks out across the Aonach Mor mountains. It makes a brill base for day trips by car, bike, train or foot in the Lochaber area as it’s just over five minutes’ drive from the centre of Fort William.

Cycling and walking paths are close to this park – including the famed Great Glen Way along the Caledonian Canal (25 minutes’ stroll) – and a selection of shops and restaurants is just down the road. If you’d prefer not to venture far from base to gather supplies, a store on site sells the basics.

Other conveniences at this thoughtfully run park include electric hook-ups, a coin-operated laundry room, clean toilets and showers, and laundry amenities. Families and groups are warmly welcomed here for hiking hols (or restful trips).

The view of Ben Nevis, proximity to Fort William, warm showers, free running chickens

    Disliked:

Being on a building site but not prior informed, stupid toilet block closing for cleaning time of 9am, lack of mirrors in toilet block, unsheltered Elsan disposal point, slopping hard standing that could not be corrected by highest setting of Millenco triple ramps, non existent WiFi.

    The Receptionist

    Disliked:

The campsite was a building site we were told that the work was 2 - 3 weeks behind but i would say it was more like 2 - 3 months behind, every morning i was woken early by tipper truck and diggers passing my caravan to despose of all the excess soil, this made the road up to the toilets and showers very muddy 2 of the toilets did not flush properly and there was no mirrors in the toilets, I believe we should have been told that bulding work was happening so we had the choice to come or not, we left a day early because we could not stand it any longer, we are an elderley couple and cannot put up with this situation especially when paying for it, we come away to relax which was impossible, also advertised when booking was wifi which was not available, i await your comments on this situation

Local attractions

The owners reckon there’s something for everyone around this site, but walkers and cyclists are especially sorted when it comes to activities. If you’re up for a trek, challenge yourself to one of the trails up Ben Nevis, getting intel on which ones to tackle at the mountain range’s visitor centre, just over five minutes’ drive away.

If you’re after a lazier lope, amble along the Caledonian Canal from the locks at Neptune's Staircase (25 minutes’ walk) or get your RDA of exercise by nipping in and out of the shops of Fort William (five minutes’ drive). The town has plenty of stores selling mountaineering kit if you need equipment to try out the more intense pursuits – think skiing and downhill biking – available in the area.

For a family day out, make your way to the Glenfinnan Viaduct (25 minutes’ drive) and see if the kids recognise it from the Harry Potter films – the Hogwarts Express was filmed crossing this oh-so-scenic bridge.

Saving perhaps the best activity till last, top off your trip by paying a visit to the whisky makers at the Ben Nevis Distillery (15 minutes’ walk) for a few drams of one of Scotland’s finest exports.

Must see

  • Nevis Range Cable Cars (0.2 miles)
  • Ben Nevis Distillery (0.4 miles)
