General

  • Spectacularly scenic lakeside park, around a 16th-century castle
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Stewart and the Galloway Forest Park
  • Pools, inn, crazy golf, games room, playground and donkey corner

Care for a hol among spectacular Scottish scenery... on a fably kitted out park with access to its own loch for fishing – and with its own swish inn and restaurant to keep you fully fuelled? Come and call upon family-run Castle Cary Holiday Park in Dumfries and Galloway.

Set a handy seven miles from Newton Stuart, Castle Cary is in splendid surrounds, with royally fine views over the local woodland, fields and the estuary of the Cree river. It's centred around a 16th-century baronial castle, part of which has been restored as The Laird's Inn, a warm and cosy space of wooden beams, stone walls and open fires.

The inn's the place to retreat to after a day getting active around the site and in the local countryside: you can fish here or in river, sea or loch nearby; there's sailing, boating, horse riding and wild swimming all nearby, and an activity centre with Segway rides and zipwiring is within 15 minutes. Galloway Forest Park is 10 minutes' drive north.

Castle Cary has excellent amenities to go with its smartly-kept pitches, including a chalet building with showers, toilets, a disabled-access toilet, a baby changing room, a laundry room and sinks; guests also have access to a freezer pack service and a dishwashing area.

Facilities are most fine too, with two big heated pools, one indoor and one outdoors; a heated paddling pool, a playground; crazy golf, a games room with pool tables and video games, and – guaranteed to make the kids go gaga – a donkey corner to greet the site's four-legged residents.

The inn has a large terrace among yet more spectacular views, and does hot food takeaways alongside its sit-in menu.

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/07 and 31/08 (subject to weather conditions).

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Facilities/activities including pools are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The indoor swimming pool is open between 23/03 and 31/10.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The café and pools are open 10am - 8pm daily in July and August.

The Laird's Inn is open Wednesday to Friday from 5pm - 11pm, Saturday 3pm - 11pm, and Sunday 12noon - 11pm.

Nice site in a lovely location. Facilities were good unisex toilet block a little cold as the radiators werent on and the weather wasnt good. The onsite cafe served lovely food at reasonable prices with the option to eat in or take away. Staff were very friendly. Due to lots of rain had to make use of the laundry room, would benefit from instructions on how to use the driers had to ring the site warden to find out you needed to get tokens from the cafe. When we got it going we dried some very wet clothing in under 30 mins tho.

    Disliked:

The Scottish weather though thats nothing to do with the site.

Local attractions

Dumfries and Galloway is stuffed with activities and attractions for all ages and tastes. To access a good amount of these at once, drive 20 minutes to the activity and adventure centre of Cream o' Galloway, where there's a woodland playground, rides and slides, nature trails and indoor play.

Also with easy reach is the activity centre of Laggan Outdoor, with zipwiring, archery, scooter and Segway rides, zorbing and... human slingshotting, if you dare. Further afield at Loch Ken there's Galloway Activity Centre, for watersports, mountain biking and climbing.

Keep the kids sweet at the Cocoabean Company (20 minutes), where they can get stuck into interactive workshops and indoor and outdoor play: yes, there's a chocolate shop here too.
