Castle Cary Holiday Park: View across the site

General

  • Spectacularly scenic lakeside park, set around a 16th-century castle
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Stewart and the Galloway Forest Park
  • Pools, inn, crazy golf, games room, playground and donkey corner

Care for a hol among spectacular Scottish scenery… on a fably kitted out park with access to its own loch for fishing – and with its own swish inn and restaurant to keep you fully fuelled? Come and call upon family-run Castle Cary Holiday Park in Dumfries and Galloway.

Set a handy seven miles from Newton Stewart, Castle Cary is in splendid surrounds with royally fine views over the local woodland, fields and the estuary of the River Cree. It's centred around a 16th-century baronial castle, part of which has been restored as the Laird's Inn, a warm and cosy space of wooden beams, stone walls and open fires.

The inn's the place to retreat to after a day getting active around the site and in the local countryside: you can fish here or in river, sea or loch nearby; there's sailing, boating, horse riding and wild swimming all nearby, and Galloway Forest Park is 10 minutes' drive north.

Castle Cary has excellent amenities to go with its smartly-kept pitches, including a chalet building with showers, toilets, a disabled-access toilet, a baby changing room, a laundry room and sinks; guests also have access to a freezer pack service and a dishwashing area.

Facilities are rather fine too, with two big heated pools (one indoor and one outdoor), a heated paddling pool, a playground, crazy golf, a games room with pool tables and video games, and – pretty much guaranteed to make the kids go gaga – a donkey corner to greet the site's four-legged residents.

Excellent site with big pitches, friendly people, pub, cafe, pools!08/01/2021

By far one of the best campsites we have stayed at over many years of camping :)
The site is friendly - both staff and other campers
    Pub on site!

We were given a touring pitch very close to the park so my daughter could go and play and I could keep an eye on her from the van. The park is very good for a campsite with lots of kids playing together

The pitch was perfect - fully serviced and clean with modern drainage cover. The fences, walls and hedges surrounding each pitch were well kept. Lots of space to stretch out in the sun on the grass :) Plenty space for awning, van and parking.

We used the new-looking shower block and were very pleased with it - although the water was very hot. (Possibly because the weather was so hot?)

We loved the pools at the cafe! It was so hot when we were there that it was very busy and the cafe staff (sensibly) started booking you in to slots when it was busy.

We ate at both the pub and cafe and were very pleased with the food and the value for money at both. We had to book a few days in advance for the pub but did this easily by contacting them through their Facebook page.

    Disliked:

Just a tiny thing - but it'd be great if there were mops in the showers. I don't like leaving puddles behind me and being unable to clean it up :)

Also it's beyond the camp site to solve the problem but there is a bit of an outbreak of myxomatosis in the area at the moment and it is upsetting for wee kids to see the rabbits like this. Just to make families aware.

    The large pitches
    The outdoor swimming pool
The new shower block with 6 showers and toilets like home from home.
    The relaxed atmosphere.
The lairds has delicious food but you need to book wee in advance as it is always fully booked. The kids had fun at the lovely playpark, but I think a slide on the grass verge would be great idea as all the kids were sliding down on the grass its self, much to us parents delight getting grass stains out ha!
The donkeys are friendly the kids loved feeding them chopped apples and carrot.

Overall the park is one of my favourites, nice and relaxed atmosphere, family friendly, we will definitely be booking again.

    Disliked:

I would say the showers were absolutely scalding that I had to take my small children to the disabled shower room as it had the appropriate dials to sort out temperature to a much cooler setting. The floors are constantly drenched in the shower room, there is one mop and bucked, I think supplying one for each shower room would have helped.

    Donkeys and park

    Disliked:

There were a lot of drunk teenagers going around kicking tents and trying to open tent doors. They continued to play loud music all night.
We were the last electric hook up and told we were the last tent so had all the space at the bottom which was fantastic for the kids playing, but there was then a family that turned up (non electric) just down from my tent in the electric and they filled that bottom space with 5 tents, a gazeebo and a toilet tent which took up the area where the kids could play.
The outside pool is one of the reasons we booked it but the pool was absolutely disgusting, the water was not clear Ans you could not see the bottom of the pool at all. It needed a good clean. In the indoor pool there was no shallow or deep end, it also needed a good clean. There was hairbrushes, socks and pants all lying around the pool and behind the chairs. It was very rusty with holes in doors. At reception you think the facilities will match it but unfortunately it's extremely tired and needs a total refurbishment
