General

  • Spectacularly scenic lakeside park, set around a 16th-century castle
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Stewart and the Galloway Forest Park
  • Pools, inn, crazy golf, games room, playground and donkey corner

Care for a hol among spectacular Scottish scenery... on a fably kitted out park with access to its own loch for fishing – and with its own swish inn and restaurant to keep you fully fuelled? Come and call upon family-run Castle Cary Holiday Park in Dumfries and Galloway.

Set a handy seven miles from Newton Stuart, Castle Cary is in splendid surrounds with royally fine views over the local woodland, fields and the estuary of the River Cree. It's centred around a 16th-century baronial castle, part of which has been restored as the Laird's Inn, a warm and cosy space of wooden beams, stone walls and open fires.

The inn's the place to retreat to after a day getting active around the site and in the local countryside: you can fish here or in river, sea or loch nearby; there's sailing, boating, horse riding and wild swimming all nearby, and an activity centre with Segway rides and zipwiring is within 15 minutes. Galloway Forest Park is 10 minutes' drive north.

Castle Cary has excellent amenities to go with its smartly-kept pitches, including a chalet building with showers, toilets, a disabled-access toilet, a baby changing room, a laundry room and sinks; guests also have access to a freezer pack service and a dishwashing area.

Facilities are most fine too, with two big heated pools, one indoor and one outdoors; a heated paddling pool, a playground; crazy golf, a games room with pool tables and video games, and – guaranteed to make the kids go gaga – a donkey corner to greet the site's four-legged residents.

The inn has a large terrace among yet more spectacular views, and does hot food takeaways alongside its sit-in menu.

Heated outdoor pool was amazing in the rain which is not uncommon. Great walks for the dogs. Small pub on site was also great staff were welcoming.

    Disliked:

The surrounding of the pool Is made up of small stones "would advise flip flops/sandals.
Indoor pool was not running due to a broken part ,these things happen I suppose.
Toilet block nearest the tent pitches wasnt cleaned regularly enough but once pointed out they were on top of it.
Showers at this block were also cold , we used the other ones which are much warmer/nicer.
A dedicated family/quieter area would be great as there was a large group of gents partying most of the night when we stayed. Not that we were too fussed tbh but others with smaller children did complain.

This is one of the best sites I’ve ever visited, we had a hard-standing Pitch and it was superb it was secluded, well maintained, well-proportioned also, the amenities were great they had a large play area for the kids and a beautiful walk through the forest down to the village. There are also what looks like a great swimming pool and a games room, we didn’t have enough time to get to it but we will most defiantly be back, great for the kids and a beautiful bar/eatery for the big kids.

    Disliked:

If I had to be really picky, no wifi and hard to get a T.V reception.

    Disliked:

did get a surprise when I opened up a pizza and found it had been thrown together in a rush, but still got eaten.
was advised of noisy main road but we still pitched up near it.

Local attractions

Dumfries and Galloway is stuffed with activities and attractions for all ages and tastes. To access a good amount of these at once, drive 20 minutes to the activity and adventure centre of Cream o' Galloway, where there's a woodland playground, rides and slides, nature trails and indoor play.

Also with easy reach is the activity centre of Laggan Outdoor, with zipwiring, archery, scooter and Segway rides, zorbing and... human slingshotting, if you dare. Further afield at Loch Ken there's Galloway Activity Centre, for watersports, mountain biking and climbing.

Keep the kids sweet at the Cocoabean Company (20 minutes), where they can get stuck into interactive workshops and indoor and outdoor play: yes, there's a chocolate shop here too.
