Castle Cary Holiday Park: Non electric grass field

General

  • Spectacularly scenic lakeside park, set around a 16th-century castle
  • A 10-minute drive from Newton Stewart and the Galloway Forest Park
  • Pools, inn, crazy golf, games room, playground and donkey corner

Care for a hol among spectacular Scottish scenery… on a fably kitted out park with access to its own loch for fishing – and with its own swish inn and restaurant to keep you fully fuelled? Come and call upon family-run Castle Cary Holiday Park in Dumfries and Galloway.

Set a handy seven miles from Newton Stewart, Castle Cary is in splendid surrounds with royally fine views over the local woodland, fields and the estuary of the River Cree. It's centred around a 16th-century baronial castle, part of which has been restored as the Laird's Inn, a warm and cosy space of wooden beams, stone walls and open fires (it's best to book a table in advance here as it's rather popular).

The inn's the place to retreat to after a day getting active around the site and in the local countryside: you can fish here or in river, sea or loch nearby; there's sailing, boating, horse riding and wild swimming all nearby, and Galloway Forest Park is 10 minutes' drive north.

Castle Cary has excellent amenities to go with its smartly-kept pitches, including a chalet building with showers, toilets, a disabled-access toilet, a baby changing room, a laundry room and sinks; guests also have access to a dishwashing area. The site also has a family-run café which is open daily and which serves breakfasts, meals, snacks, coffee and sweet treats.

Facilities are rather fine too, with two big heated pools (one indoor and one outdoor; charges apply for both), a heated paddling pool, a playground, crazy golf, a games room with pool tables and video games, and – pretty much guaranteed to make the kids go gaga – a donkey corner to greet the site's four-legged residents.

AA 2 pennants

Please note

Minimum spacing of 3 metres between pitches.

Facilities/activities including pools are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

The area is lovely and piece full. We were lucky with the weather and no midges. Grounds look to be well maintained and clean.

    Disliked:

My only negative comment would be if the touring pitches are full ypu would need a motor mover to push caravan back. There is plenty space between pitches but not much space opposing.

Think we were given the worst pitches 88 & 89. Grass all dead, just dirt that carried into van. No identifiable marker between pitches. Way Too near statics, park was very quiet could have easily given us much better pitches with decent grass away from statics.

Not busy so nice and quiet and good weather.

    Disliked:

This site offered so much on the booking site but in fact offered very little. We hoped to use the Laird's inn, and the cafe for a change from cooking in our motorhome. Fortunately we had food purchased prior to arrival otherwise we would have had to pack everything and go out for meals. The Inn, cafe and shop were all closed for our 2 day stay. There was a phone number to enquire 're opening times, but calls went unanswered. Reception didn't answer calls. When we complained politely, we were told that the website pointed out that out of season, there were limited opening time. No facilities were open, except loos and showers. 13th to 15th September must be out of season! We couldn't check the website with no WiFi. Confirmation of booking did say limited opening of some facilities but by then it was too late. We were offered a free breakfast in the cafe the next morning but when we left at 10.30 it was shut!!!!

Although we had a touring caravan we stayed in the tenting field on an electric pitch with a water tap just behind us. The grass was cut nicely , bins were close by and also not far from the toilets and showers. We also have a dog which allowed us much more freedom than on one of the more expensive pitches. The surrounding walks were also very good.
They also do a wonderful breakfast.
