General

  • Family-friendly site in the grounds of a pub three miles from Frome
  • A 15-minute drive from Longleat House and Longleat Safari Park
  • Pub-restaurant with seasonal menu and wide range of beers

What are you going to want for dinner on your Somerset break? Maybe you’ll be in the mood for a slap-up pub meal... perhaps the fickle British climate will bless you with barbecue weather.... or it’s possible you’ll feel like lazing around with a takeaway.

Frankly, who knows what your future self will be feeling like, so it’s a crafty move to grab a spot at The Den and Orchard, where all three are equally easy options. And that’s because this family-friendly site happens to be handily placed in the grounds of a country pub-restaurant, on the edge of Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and three miles from the market town of Frome.

Pub meals here are fine affairs, all locally sourced and seasonal, and there’s also a takeaway menu of burgers and the like when you fancy grabbing something quick. Frugal types and those planning a bit of outdoor cheffing can acquire essentials at the supermarkets in Frome (do call into the pub at some point though, if only to marvel at the enticing treats of the Beer Wall).

Firepits and chimeneas have been set up around the site for cooking and flame gazing; there’s also a washing-up area and a wooden toilet block with gents’ and ladies’ toilets and showers.

Between eats, days out nearby include fishing, mountain biking, visits to National Trust properties and the excellent Longleat Safari Park.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Handy site for Longleat, but wouldn't recommend for a long stay. 17/09/2018

Small site, fairly quite numbers wise

    Disliked:

Basic toilet block, lots of traffic noise sounds like a race track at times, pub dog allowed to walk round campsite unsupervised, and not cleaned up after so have to watch where you walk at night.

    Disliked:

Just the traffic noise, it does die down a little in the evening so didn't bother us overly but is worth bearing in mind if you're not used to traffic noise

A good small site, if expensive, let down by dog policy enforcement 05/10/2018

Small site with not too many pitches
    Friendly owners
Flexible with tent size and awnings
    Clean toilet and shower facilities
    Fire pits available
    Flexible on pitch location
On site pub if you want a food or drink

    Disliked:

Dogs on lead policy not enforced. Some owners were throwing balls for their dogs (not good considering the must be kept on lead policy) and allowing them to trip over our guy ropes and slobber on our tent. We almost had our new tent ripped after one of their dogs dragged a thorny branch along the side. The site is not big enough for dogs I'm afraid, and we do like dogs.

Also, the owners dog is allowed free reign over the site unsupervised, it's mess was not cleaned up.

Facilities were not restocked often enough, luckily we bring our own toilet roll just in case.

Considering the above, the site is too expensive. We moved to a much better and cheaper site for the last few days of our holiday.

Not the owners fault but there were a lot of wasps, not sure if the apples were an attraction. Didn't get stung though.

Well what was not to like. The owners are very friendly. Campsite is peaceful. I have read previous reviews prior to our stay and couldn't fault anything - we didn't hear any road traffic. The facilities were good, lovely hot showers. The restaurant was cosy and food was great. We were a little worried that we would be noisy but you couldn't hear our music when stood in the kitchen area . The fridge & Freezer came in really handy as we brought food with us and cooked most of our meals during our stay. The use of the fire pits & fire starter kits was great, probably recommend bringing your own Wood/kindling though it is good to have wood on-site if you run out when the cooler summer nights. The signed bins for recycling was quite handy. Would stay again given the chance.

Great location not far from Bath and Cheddar Gorge.

    Disliked:

Nothing about the campsite - Enjoyed our stay.

Wasps - Cant control mother nature
Tip to reduce the wasps from gathering - clean up any cans /empty food packets straight away to avoid any bother. Avoid leaving anything over night.

Relaxed family friendly site. No strict rules. Camp fires/bbq's permitted. Wood available to buy on site. Staff friendly, helpful and approachable. You can't park next to your pitch however there are lots of pull along trolleys/carts to transport your things from the carpark to the short distance of your pitch. Bathroom facilities are great amd clean! Great price! 7 miles from longleat

    Disliked:

I'm a really light sleeper so the noise of the busy main road wasn't great. The den and orchard can't do anything about this but this is the only downside for me!

Great small and friendly campsite. Great to be able to hire a fire kit (fire pit, firelighters, kindling and logs). The kids loved running around the campsite and playing with the campsite's board games. The owner couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. Food from next door's pub was amazing (especially the takeaway burgers). Good campsite for visiting nearby Longleat

    Disliked:

It was slightly noisy from the road which we expected (didn't bother the kids and we took ear plugs) and also a bit noisy on one of the nights with music from nearby house party/nightclub

A perfect site for families with younger kids; clean, safe, friendly! 28/08/2018

Everything! This is a small, clean, friendly campsite. It is enclosed so my kids (2, 6, 8 yrs old) could run around, pick fruit from the fruit trees and generally have fun, but they were safe, never out of view or out of earshot.

The showers, loos and food area were spotlessly clean. The food area had plugs for charging and a fridge and freezer.

It was quiet and peaceful (I worried because some previous reviews flagged up road noise, but it was really not noticeable - just the normal outside noise you'd expect when camping).

The owners were exceptionally friendly and the fires are all in old washing machine drums so are really safe.

Food at the pub on site was great - and they do take away.

Amazing park just across the quiet country lane, with a cafe next to it (the lighthouse).

Supermarket a 5min drive away. Longleat 10-15 mins away. Stonehenge 30 mins away.

All in all, a perfect place to stay!

Have just returned from the Den and Orchard and I can honestly say the only down side was the weather. The camp is small and has everything you could want with the added bonuses of a Fridge and Freezer (nice to keep the wine chilled and ice on hand) plus electricity points for charging your phones. Everything has been thought of even down to a fire pit at each pitch. Adam & Michelle are very friendly and helpfull. Logs can be purchased each day for your fire pits.
The site is attached to their Restaurant which I have to say is very nice and not at all over priced, which is why it was always busy so would be good to book if you decide to go on an evening.
Location is good as very near to Longleat, Frome, Chedder Gorge and Bath

    Disliked:

Did not have wifi which would have been an added plus.
