General

  • Family-friendly site in a rural spot three miles from Frome
  • A 15-minute drive from Longleat House and Longleat Safari Park
  • Firepits and games room on site, plus takeaway for meals and drinks

What are you going to want for dinner on your Somerset break? Perhaps the fickle British climate will bless you with barbecue weather… or it’s possible you’ll feel like lazing around with a tasty takeaway…

Frankly, who knows what your future self will be feeling like, so it’s a crafty move to grab a spot at The Den and Orchard, where both are equally easy options. And that’s because this family-friendly site happens to have its own fab takeaway right on site (open evenings from Thursday to Saturday).

The food offerings here are tempting indeed: get set for a menu of burgers, pizzas, main meals and a range of drinks, all of which should contribute to a lovely laidback evening Frugal types and those planning a bit of outdoor cheffing can acquire essentials at the supermarkets in Frome, three miles away.

Firepits and chimeneas have been set up around the site for cooking and flame gazing; there’s also a washing-up area and a wooden toilet block with gents’ and ladies’ toilets and showers. A games room (with darts, table football and table tennis) is on hand too, for damp evenings and general entertainment.

The Den and Orchard is on the edge of Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so there are plenty of walks nearby to help you work up an appetite. Other days out nearby include fishing, mountain biking, visits to National Trust properties and the excellent Longleat Safari Park.

Ok so its a pretty little field with some nice little apple trees and a scattering of picnic benches (for those without the car camping comforts of tables and chairs) and firepits. Its a small site but the downside of a small site is that if there is a large noisy group, you cant escape them. As there was when we visited, a large group were in the cabins at the bottom of the field and we had to move our tent in the middle of the night to get as far away from them as possible. I guess this is a potential problem on any campsite but I thought a small one like this might not attract or allow large groups.
However even without other people, the noise from the main road, the Frome ring road, is constant, with lorries, boy racers, motorbikes all through the evening and sporadically through the night... tranquil countryside camping this is not!
I was impressed with the facilities though, nice clean toilets, washing up area, fridge, plenty of covered space if you need shelter from the rain.
One final disappointment was the sudden and unannounced withdrawal of food availability as talked about on this site. This was a factor in deciding to come here and there was nothing to say this had stopped (on their facebook page/website etc).

Friendly welcome, quiet site with excellent facilities. The showers were a real bonus after a day's biking. Plentiful supply of fire pits and picnic benches. We even got in a yo-yo competition in the games room!

Really liked the peace, and relaxed atmosphere. Only small, but everyone very respectful of other campers and you're not on top of each other. Lovely clean facilities. Very welcoming owners too! It felt like nothing would've been too much trouble, they left you to get on but were always easily accessible.

You'll need to drive to get about, but there's plenty to do around. You're close to lots of places of interest (Bath, Roman baths, Stone henge, lots of beautiful little villages including Lacock for any Harry Potter fans).

This is a great little site; facilities are very basic with no electric hook-up for tent pitches but everything was kept clean and tidy. Little extras such as the games room and the provision of plenty of toilet roll, hand soap, washing up liquid, etc. was a nice touch that you don't always get at campsites. Fire pits were available for use with a small charge for wood. The on-site takeaway was fab, with great food and generous portions. The owner was very relaxed, friendly and helpful. The site itself was very pretty with all of the fruit trees dotted about. Conveniently located for Longleat and Frome. Shops and restaurants just a 5 minute drive away.
The glamping pods/shepherd's huts look lovely!

    Disliked:

If, like us, you are not used to it, the proximity to the main road means that it is quite noisy through the night.

I loved the rustic look to the facilities. The facilities were really well thought out on the campsite. I liked the small size of the site. The lodge was lovely and very clean. It was a home from home. Perfect for us

    Disliked:

The grass was a bit long so you got very wet trainers going between the lodge and the facilities. The timer on the lights was too short, you ended up still in the shower in the dark with the sensor outside.
