  • Riverside site within the grounds of an adventure and wildlife park
  • Within a 25-minute drive of Bristol and Bath; Cheddar Gorge 45 minutes
  • Dog-friendly; experience the park out of hours; watersports rental
The name tells you two key things about Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park Camping – namely, that it sits right on the banks of the River Avon, and that it is within the grounds of the eponymous park. This translates into 24-hour access to the wildlife park for the ultimate out-of-hours experience. Now, how’s that for a welcome to the West Country? This dog-friendly site is packed with adventure. You can catch a sunrise with the alpacas or watch the sun go down over the Dinosaur Valley, with its huge collection of animatronic dinosaurs. There are also plenty of outdoor play areas in the adventure park. There are paddleboards and kayaks for hire (and lessons available, if you’ve never had a go before), or you’re welcome to bring your own. Afterwards, rinse off in the site’s hot showers. You may very well be quite hungry after taking advantage of the riverside location. If you’re planning to be chef for the break, there are firepits for hire; if you don’t fancy cooking, the burger kitchen will take care of the chopping and sizzling for you. The On The Deck bar is open every evening and runs a happy hour. With roaming animals and inclusive entry to the adventure and wildlife park (from your arrival date to your departure date), this is a very family-friendly getaway. A final bonus point: there are excellent access roads, with Bristol, Bath and the Monarch’s Way within a 25-minute drive.

Liked: We really enjoyed our stay here. There was a lot for our son to do, and he really enjoyed the extra time with the animals before and after the park had shut. The bar had good value food and it is nice to sit there and watch your children run about. The staff are really helpful and help out when you need them to.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (large)

Liked: Situated on the grounds of the park so activities in the park easily accessible. Cost of camping included entry for all 4 of us for every day of our visit. Able to access the park "after closing" for day visitors which my son loved as he felt like a VIP. Very large pitch with electric hook up. Cars are not allowed to be parked on the pitch, parking provided in car park that is very close. Site was not full when we arrived so loads of space for the kids to play - this would not be the case if all the pitches were full.

Disliked: Only 3 out of the 5 toilets were open and the locks on all that were open didnt work very well (hard to lock/didnt lock). Bins in the toilets were not emptied daily despite the toilets being cleaned and with little ventiliation meant they were a bit smelly. Showers are basic but there was hot water. No lighting at the dish / hand washing station or any lighting around the site (take a torch).

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Local attractions

From ancient Roman baths to elegant Georgian architecture, the city of Bath (20 minutes’ drive) is well worth a visit. Check out the collections at the Victoria Art Gallery and the Holburne Museum (keep an eye on their calendar for interactive workshops), or follow in the footsteps of Jane Austen, who lived here for five years in the early 1800s. Explore the legacy of Isambard Kingdom Brunel in Bristol (25 minutes), where the famed Victorian engineer built the vertiginous Clifton Suspension Bridge and the passenger liner SS Great Britain. Bristol is also known for its street art, which includes Banksy’s take on The Girl with the Pearl Earring. In the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Cheddar Gorge (45 minutes) is a limestone gorge with guided tours of subterranean caves. There are more limestone caverns at Wookey Hole (45 minutes), which have a millennia-long history ranging from Neanderthals to Celt tribes and the Romans.
