Putlake Adventure Farm: Visitors all pitched up

General

  • Family-friendly farm site on the Isle of Purbeck
  • On the edge of Langton Matravers; five minutes' drive from Swanage
  • Adventure farm with a petting zoo, indoor soft play centre and café

Putlake Adventure Farm is a family-friendly site set on the edge of Langton Matravers, a peaceful Dorset village. The Isle of Purbeck, where this site is located, may actually be a peninsula, but you'll never be far from the sea on this scenic stretch of land – Swanage beach is a five-minute drive away, while the spectacular vistas and crashing waves of Dancing Ledge are a 40-minute walk away through the fields.

Oodles of footpaths pass right outside the site, including car-free trails that you can take to the historic village of Corfe Castle (you can also drive there in about 10 minutes). And just in case this all-round top location wasn't already fab enough, Putlake Adventure Farm is a quarter of a mile from a pub where there’s a cosy little beer garden…

When you roll up here you'll be free to pick the spot you best like the look of and get settled down on the grassy main field. If you unpack and realise you've forgotten something, the handy on-site shop is on hand to tide you over with essentials for the duration of your stay.

Facilities here include toilets and a washing-up point. A popular adventure farm with a petting zoo, indoor soft play area and café is located on the same site (a separate fee applies to enter the farm). Please note that while VW-style campervans can use this site, it's not suitable for larger motorhomes.

Please note

Facilities/activities including entrance to the adventure farm are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Units longer than 5 metres are not allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Group bookings of 3 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

    Nice field, peaceful site.

    Disliked:

Litter in field, the fact you had to pay extra for access to the farm animals and whatever else was there. Site only superficially cleaned and wash up sink disgusting although it was out of action. Although we were told the showers were broken, and there would be hot water in both toilets that was only the case for one day in the ladies and it was a mere trickle. Had to use gents for washing up water which as a lady was not satisfactory. Didn't even bother with farm as extra high costs were in place. A few calves in a very small pen which seemed cruel. There were only a few tents which reflected my experience and just about made it usable. Can't imagine how it would cope if full or even partially full.

    Dirty toilets

There was no hot water/showers when we were there, which I can forgive them for as a broken boiler is noone's fault. However, the toilets were probably the dirtiest toilets I have seen on a campsite for years. On the day we arrived there were 3 cubicles in the women's - one was blocked, one the seat was broken and one had no toilet paper. There was toilet paper, hairs, an old used plaster all over the floor and sinks. Even if you don't have hot water, it would take 15 minutes to wipe it all down with some anti-bac wipes. Sign says they are cleaned daily. Even if this is true (I'm not convinced!), I am wondering if it needs to be twice daily.

The dirty toilets are literally the only thing that would put me off coming back. Such a shame.

Unfortunately there wasn't any hot water due to broken boiler but we were prewarned of this before arrival. The toilet block could do with a bit of modernization but was still usable

Ideal location for Swanage, Studland Bay and Kimmeridge. Nice site …31/08/2021

Ideal location for Swanage, Studland Bay and Kimmeridge.
Nice site for young children, 2 year old loved to visit the animals. Room for older ones to kick a ball without infringing on others. Quiet in the evenings.
Places to eat within easy walking distance.

    Disliked:

It was unfortunate that the boiler servicing the showers wasn’t functioning during our stay. With 3 teenagers this was less than ideal (although they were probably quite happy not to wash). The owners were very apologetic and offered alternatives such as using the showers at another site or local swimming pool, with the costs being refunded, but this wasn’t really practical as there were 7 of us in total. There was also no hot water available at the washing up point or the ladies toilets for the majority of our time there. (Small electric water heaters were fitted in the ladies by the time we left and these were already available in the gents.)

The toilets could have been cleaned more regularly as the grass on site was fairly long and easily walked through. And why users can’t pick up their own litter and
/or found it necessary to put half a roll of paper down the loo is beyond me…surely they don’t act like that at home? (Misuse of the facilities clearly not the owners fault I would point out).

The field could have been mowed too which might have helped although any cut grass would require collecting to avoid a worse scenario.

This site could be lovely but it needs considerable money spending on it to update and improve its facilities all round. As it stands I would find it difficult to recommend but that maybe due to my age; my daughter and son in law would visit again (but would check the showers were working first!)

Fantastic location with great views and close to everything we wanted to do. We had a great lunch and snacks in the café where we were met by extremely friendly staff. The wood fired pizzas were delicious!

    Disliked:

We were made aware that there wouldn't be hot water in the showers during our stay and the owners were very apologetic and offered alternative facilities nearby. There was nothing that could have been done at the time but a hot shower would be the only improvement for the stay.
