  • Family-friendly farm site on the Isle of Purbeck
  • On the edge of Langton Matravers; five minutes' drive from Swanage
  • Adventure farm with a petting zoo, indoor soft play centre and café
A family-friendly site with pitches on a grassy field, Putlake Adventure Farm sits on the outskirts of the peaceful Dorset village of Langton Matravers, on the Isle of Purbeck (actually a peninsula rather than an island…). You’ll never be far from the sea on this scenic stretch of land: Swanage beach is a five-minute drive away, while several highlights of the Jurassic Coast, including the spectacular vistas and crashing waves of Dancing Ledge, are a 40-minute walk away through the fields. A popular adventure farm with a petting zoo, vast indoor soft-play area and a playground with diggers and pedal go-karts (plus a café where the adults can nurse a hot drink while the kids scamper about) is located on the same site; please note that a separate fee applies to enter the farm. Oodles of footpaths pass right outside the site, including car-free trails that lead to the historic village of Corfe Castle (one hour and 15 minutes on foot, though you can also drive there in about 10 minutes). And just in case this all-round top location wasn’t already fab enough, Putlake Adventure Farm is a quarter of a mile from a pub with a cosy beer garden… When you roll up here you’ll be free to pick the spot you best like the look of. If you unpack and realise you’ve forgotten something, the handy on-site shop ought to tide you over with essentials for the duration of your stay. Facilities include toilets and a washing-up point. Please note that while VW-style campervans are welcome, the site is not suitable for larger motorhomes.

Unpowered grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Really nice views and the staff are absolutely lovely. Fun being next to the adventure park, although not cheap (around £10 for a child and same for adult) so I wouldn’t have gone more than once.

Disliked: Fairly basic facilities and not hugely well looked after. No loo roll in any of the ladies toilets the whole time we were there. Need to buy a shower token when reception is open which limits when you can take one. Listing does mention extra fee for farm, but they could definitely make it clearer.

Unpowered grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Basic site. Very quiet. Close to bus stop and town/beach. Friendly staff. Lovely views.

Disliked: Not so much disliked but feel the facilities could do with a update. The showers need a shelf for toiletries and a handrier would be good as nothing to dry hands after visiting toilet.

Unpowered grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Quiet site with beautiful views. Lots of places to visit within 10 mins drive and a great pub just 5 mins walk away. Activity farm on site was a hit with the kids. Raised fire pits allowed so a cozy fire and marshmallows each night. We'll come back and stay for more than 2 nights next time!

Disliked: Only 7-8 pitches when we were there meant no queues for the (two) showers. I can see this may become frustrating if busier. Would be really helpful if the shop stocked some camping basics - always something forgotten!

Local attractions

With a long sandy beach and shallow waters, Swanage is a popular destination for a family day at the seaside. And when you’re all beached out, you can head to Prince Albert Gardens for views of the Victorian pier and Swanage Bay, or take a ride on the Swanage Railway's heritage trains all the way to Corfe Castle and beyond. Overlooked by the ruins of 11th-century Corfe Castle, Dorset Adventure Park (10 minutes’ drive) is the place to get wet (at the inflatable water park) and/or muddy (at the assault course with cargo nets, monkey bars and mud slides). If you’re into militaria, you'll likely appreciate the displays at The Tank Museum (25 minutes), which include armoured vehicles from both World Wars, plus other conflicts like the wars in the Gulf and Afghanistan. You can see these tanks moving in the open-air arena during special events such as mock battles.
