Bovey's Down Farm: Dogs welcome

General

  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm shop and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food

Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed.

This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie.

Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away.

Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…)

Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a free wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Honestly, it is more of a case of what not to like.

We loved our time on the farm with Pam and Gerald, we had a meal with them for two of the nights and loved it.

The price was on the slightly higher side but it was worth the money and my wife couldn't praise the cakes enough.

    Disliked:

The pitch we requested to be away from others meant we were on more of a slope which made for a bit of a challenge but this is typical and to be expected when camping.

Pamela and and Gerald were friendly and helpful. The toilets and showers were clean and comfortable. Unfortunately the weather was wet on the weekend we stayed ,so the barn with comfy chairs in the bar was great to shelter from the weather away from our tents.
All the facilities were spot on - microwave, fridge and freezer available. The firepit and logs provided were brilliant for the camping experience.

We were visiting for a wedding down the road so was perfect location for us. The campsite was pretty simple but all we needed - the toilet and shower facilities were great and always in clean condition - the showers are probably the best I've had on a campsite.

It was great to have the restaurant available on site for an evening meal as we didn't want to bring along any cooking equipment as were travelling light. Gerald was lovely to have a chat to and learn about the campsite.

We also took up the opportunity to book extra the fire pit for the evening which came with everything needed to make a fire and plenty of wood to burn. A great little spot for a campsite.

Lovely rural location, birdsong and far reaching views. The hosts were just super. The food alone was well worth the journey. The mountain biking in the area is outstanding. It gave us the appitite to really appreciate the food at the Swallow Barn restaurant on site.
Thanks so much, hopefully we shall return.

    Disliked:

The sloping site, but only because I have a problem with my achillies at the moment. The site gave outstanding views and so no complaits from us.

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour).

Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea.

Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
