  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm produce and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food
Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed. This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie. Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away. Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…) Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a free wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The site was easy to find and would have great views if the weather was good.

Disliked: The ground was very muddy and we had to get towed on to the pitch. If you are offering winter pitches , hard standing is a must. It looks like they are putting a few hard standing pitches in.

From the manager: Hello, thank you for taking the time to review your one night stay here.
Views.
Yes we do have excellent views when not inclement winter weather.
Pitches.
We do have a few hard standings which where in use during your stay. You are quite correct we are in stalling a few more. I must just add we only offer grass pitches and if campers read the information & see that one should expect mud in January, it didn't used to be so but in recent years we have so much rain. We stay open as that is requested by many who want to visit family in the area during the festive season.
You were travelling with another camping campervan couple , they approached their pitch differently & got onto site without our help. I'm sorry if it didn't gel with you but thankfully we have a lot of winter repeat customers who enjoy what
we offer.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Good value site with decent facilities. I stayed on a newly built electric pitch close to shower and toilet facilities, even though close season you can see they are investing in the site. Would potentially be a beautiful location in the summer.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Hot water, lights in toilet block, hooks on shower doors, flat level pitch and quiet and peaceful.

Disliked: The cafe/restaurant was closed during our stay and we weren't told this when we booked. The site felt uncared for and scruffy. For £27 a night off season I would expect a far superior site.

From the manager: Good morning.Thank you for taking the time to review your 2 night stay starting Sunday 29th / Tues 31st.

We did try to email all campers and advise we were not opening the restaurant but as your booking was made in the evening of Christmas eve after the office was closed sadly you possibly missed that information. On your arrival I did explain that these few days are our annual break and the one Sunday per year when we don't open the farm kitchen for a roast.
.( you were the only campers on site)
Our nearest neighbour is the local pub doing excellent carveries so no one misses a meal.
Please note you booked onto a working farm in the dead of winter, we still continue the farm work 24/7 so not a full holiday for us.
.With the winter weather and storm 'BERT' playing havoc with the farm and site it is bound to look less appealing than in summer time but repairs should be completed soon now staff breaks are over. You could see we have recently had a lot of JCB digger work done on site f or drainage etc, = heavy investment & challenging to get done .We now keep our fingers crossed for the weather to improve.
FYI costs/pitch fees.
£27 per night is not expensive when taking into account deductions happening in the form of vat, then booking fee thro pitch up, followed by payment handling with stripe & finally electric usage, taking all this away leaves very little to cover our side..

From the manager: Hello and thank you for taking the time to review your one night stay here.
We are pleased you enjoyed the great views from your area, I'm sorry about the mud but with a wet Autumn renting a grass pitch inevitably leads to challenges. We noticed you did not use the hard standing next to the pitch as I suggested
but it was available to make things easier for you.
We look forward to your return visit one day.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: A warm welcome from the hosts who let me park on the hardstanding as it was very boggy and I was slipping around a bit 😂.
The roast dinner from the restaurant certainly made me feel more at home.
Toilets and showers were very clean expect for the spiders (but they wanted to stay out of the rain😀).
Washing up facilities were clean, hot water provided. There is a fridge, microwave and washing machine on site but I didn't use these.
Even though it was foggy and damp for my stay I enjoyed the peace and quiet. Will definitely be coming back when it's a little drier so I can adventure a bit further as this was my first solo camp.
Thank you so much. See you next year 😀

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Relaxed, family run site with a very warm welcome when we arrived. We went to sleep and woke up to the sound of owls in the wood beside us, wonderful!
As it was November and wet, tge owner suggested we park on a small hardstanding area near the site entrance. Good facilities and a hot shower. Excellent to have a Cafe and bar on site, we shall be back to try out the food!

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour). Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea. Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
