  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm produce and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food
Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed. This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie. Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away. Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…) Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a free wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Very friendly hosts. Restaurant on site.

Disliked: Boggy pitch due to heavy rain the day before. Toilet block

From the manager: Good morning , thank you for taking the time to review. Very pleased you enjoyed the restaurant and company on your short visit here. Hmm, yes we did have rain but as its summer time I didn't realise the ground was 'boggy' Each pitch is approx 8m /25 ft in width and depth so hopefully 6 metre motor homes don't need to go back tight to the hedge. It looks to me as if the council 'ditch' outside is also blocked. We will attempt to sort that issue. Luckily this is a working farm so tractors always available if anyone gets 'stuck' on site, quick word down here and Farmer Gerald will happily assist. Toilet block , whats not to like ? I could do with further information please. I /we bleach / clean the 8 toilets, two urinals and 4 showers daily, they are equipped with everything, including auto lights , shaving points , one has baby changing station. FYI, if people leave the doors open the lights stay on and of course this attracts flies...sadly out of our control. Best wishes for future camping. Gerald and Pam.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: How quiet it was, the campsite wasn’t very busy so very much enjoyed the peace and quiet with a stunning view

Disliked: Very basic toilet blocks and there was a private function so there was no public access to the tea rooms.

From the manager: Good morning, thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed the piece and quiet plus the views as you say they are stunning and very relaxing. You do refer to the toilets as basic, I think you have to agree they have everything required and are kept very clean. Yes ,the private function was a surprise 80th birthday party for a local resident, who greatly enjoyed the very unexpected treat. You and the other campers were emailed the information earlier in the week with directions and pitch no's along with information we would close the tea room but takeaway orders for food and drinks would be available , which we happily delivered if required. Reopening for breakfast from 8.30am Sunday. We hope to see you back here again one day. It was great to have a phone chat. Best wishes, Pam.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely and quiet with a beautiful view of the countryside as you drive though the gates. Charming restaurant and bar area and although we didn’t have a meal, we tried the local cider and homemade cake, both of which were delicious. We purchased wood from the site and had a firepit next to our tent after our dinner which was a lovely touch. The facilities were nice and clean and had everything we needed. The location is perfect for exploring Devon and Dorset and we’ll definitely be back at some point

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour). Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea. Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
