Bovey's Down Farm: Dogs welcome

General

  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm shop and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food

Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed.

This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie.

Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away.

Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…)

Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a free wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

    Rural setting

    Disliked:

Scruffy waste area, unkempt camping area, poor chem disposal

From the manager...

Hello, thank you for taking the time to review, albeit unfavourable. We are pleased you liked the rural setting if nothing else.
Our waste area is screened and has weekly commercial emptying of bins and recycling. We keep the grass cut when ever we can , on a weekly basis but the 10 days before your arrival we were fully booked for the bank holiday and half term ,making cutting almost impossible , for safety reasons.. I am not at all sure of your reasons for suggesting poor chemical disposal? We have a 2000lite underground tank, with flushing and wash out facilities, which was emptied exactly one week before your arrival, which Always cleansing keep regularly emptied .
Our showers and toilets are cleaned every hour of each day, so again , I am not sure why you could give no rating to the cleanliness.
We are a working farm but always take time to chat with our campers and do our best for your relaxation by providing some meals when ever possible, opening every day at 8.30 am until 6pm ( except Tuesday) with Thurs/Fri Sat, food until 10pm.
Gerald and Pam Sweetland.

Only 4 toilets on the site, the booking showers because of covid is a great idea unless like us you got a 9pm slot not great, very hilly site do slept on a wink, will not return

From the manager...

Hello,
Thank you for your review. We are very sorry you did not find anything to like here.
We do actually have 6 toilets and 2 urinals , but maybe you did not discover these.
Thankfully most can see the beauty of this farm. and realise that whilst the staycation is in progress we gave in to demand and accepted more guests ( our toilet numbers are within the legal limit) ,there are also lots of level pitches but sadly you seem not to have had the perfect one but it do mean everyone gets a view. Regards, Gerald & Pam

Location good in terms of proximity to local attractions and beaches.

    Disliked:

Our pitch was close to a road, was quite noisy at times due to lorries/farm equipment going past.
We were allocated a time slot for shower, the time slots available were not very convenient 10pm, 4pm, 11am. The site would benefit from more shower facilities.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, albeit not favourable. Sadly we cannot make the road traffic any less. Farm tractors and machinery is a must in the countryside.
We do apologise for your 11am shower time allocation. We declined many times before we finally accepted more campers & upped our pitch numbers for the benefit of tourists and the staycation. Since the start of the pandemic our part of the hospitality industry ( weddings) has been wrecked and there was no way we could afford to install more showers for what will probably be a short term requirement.

Kind regards P & G

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour).

Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea.

Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
