Bovey's Down Farm: Dogs welcome

General

  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Kitchen door sales and tea room for homemade meals and takeaway food

Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed.

This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie.

Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away.

Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…)

Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a free wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Everything - great pitch, wonderful drinks and food. Services are good and clean. It is fairly hilly so expect a few slopes to and from the toilet and shower block. The owners were really fun and we had a superb meal there - steak to die for!

From the manager...

Good afternoon, Disliked the noise from a road so small it doesn't even have a number?
Choosing your own pitch, as you discovered is totally impractical. all pitches are preselected, nothing unusual about that ,not only ensuring families and friends are able to be together ,but also tents and caravans need different area's. As for the WIFI & 4G did you even come down and collect the password from me to enable you both to connect to our recently installed full site signal ?( only added in July, at a huge expense to ourselves for your benefit.)
Happily, we get many returning campers, having stayed numerous times in the the past 27 years.
Kind regards, Boveys Down Farm.

So we booked this trip as was only 15mins from where we live but was our 1st camping trip for the family along with another family with young kids. Will definitely be returning. Everything we needed for a 1st trip. All tents beside us friendly enough apart from 1 moaning about the noise. Gerald came to our rescue a few times due to electrical issues and even lent us a extention lead. Pam very friendly welcoming us. Toilet/showers always clean and never a cue to get in. Thank you.

Well went went as a group of three families and we were well accommodated by the hosts.
The set times for the showers were a bit of a bind but totally understandable.
We had a lovely meal in the club house and my stepson even said the chicken was better than Nando's . He wanted the recipe but it was a close guarded secret .

The camp was well kept and in beautiful scenery.
You could get Wi-Fi all over the campsite which was great for the kids when they wanted some quiet time.

We would go again if were were down that way .

This is not all dislikes just an honest review but there was no other box to put it in.... We arrived on site a little early and was sent away and told to come back at 3 which was fine, however when we returned there was a massive queue for check in and the lady doing it wasn't very pleasant (I assumed a little flustered as she was super friendly when we were leaving)
We were in a group of 6 tents which we had previously called and agreed but was told we may not be able to pitch together and the electric hook ups were on a first come first served basis even though we had paid for it.... After A LOT of faff it was sorted
The site was a lot more hilly than expected although not an issue we just had to pitch at an angle.
There were only 3 showers on site which you were given an allocated time for (22 of us to use 1 shower in a 1hr slot was never going to happen) so some got told off for using showers outside of our time.

However you get what you pay for and we still had a lovely time just some little tweeks and it could be a cracking little site

From the manager...

Firstly, i apologise if you thought I was unfriendly to start off, but when check in time is between 3pm & 7pm we hope our guests will keep to that window and respect us for the reasons in doing so and not throw their weight around trying to pitch much earlier in the day. A sight such as ours has pitches changing on a daily basis and we allocated all close together for you, this was planned earlier and they all had EHU, which is always the case and never on a first come first served basis.
Obviously you misinterpreted the shower rota as your allocation after the first night was a 3 hour window from 7pm until 10pm daily , in unit C, by the kitchen, we did wonder why no one came and used that 3 hour space & also a double in mornings. We do the rota totally for the campers health and safety, to be COVID secure for everyone . If things like that are an issue it would be much better to come direct to us and discuss things face to face.
We cannot do anything about the rolling Devon hills, just sit back and enjoy the view..

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour).

Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea.

Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
