Bovey's Down Farm: Bovey's Down Farm

General

  • Quiet rural site on a working farm 10 minutes' drive from Honiton
  • A 15-minute drive from Seaton, Sidmouth and the South West Coast Path
  • Farm shop and tea room on site for homemade meals and takeaway food

Foodies who fancy a farm break, step this way… Bovey's Down Farm is a place where it’s possible to eat very well indeed.

This rural site on a working beef farm in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, 10 minutes’ drive from Honiton. And with that setting comes some splendid feasting material: pick up home-cooked cakes, pies, traditional pasties and homemade burgers from the farmhouse kitchen to eat at the picnic area, or settle in for drinks, lunches, cream teas and evening meals in the tea room or beer garden. You can also acquire bread, ribeye steaks and gluten-free sausages from the site for an evening barbecue or campfire brekkie.

Once suitably fed and watered, there’s plenty to do nearby: you can get down to the Devon coast (and the resorts of Sidmouth and Seaton) in about 15 minutes’ drive, get out and about for walks/bike rides on the many country lanes and bridleways in the area or play a round of golf a couple of miles away.

Getting a taste of farm life is pretty straightforward too: guests can join owner Gerald for a walking tour to meet the Aberdeen Angus cattle, ducks and hens and pick up tips on the wildlife that can be spotted around the place (lots of birdlife and the occasional fox or badger…)

Facilities on site include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a free wifi connection to help you plan all those days out.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.

Group bookings of 6 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

The tearoom is open 8.30am to 6pm Wednesday to Monday, and is closed on Tuesday.

The restaurant/bar is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 7pm to 10pm.

I chose the wrong weekend to go. I was the only one on site and the managers were off-site catering for a wedding event the first evening. The weather was atrocious (not their fault!!). The arrival time states 3.00pm so I arrived after that, but as the place was completely empty it would have been great to have been notified that I could have got there much earlier and then I could have had a whole day of walking with the dog and settling in before the weather set in. I left a day early as the next wave of storms was coming in.so I really only got half a break. It is difficult to provide a fair review as it was just me and the dog on site and it was out of season. I would imagine that it is very different on sunny summer days,

From the manager...

Hi,
Thank you for your review.
Choosing to stay at quieter times is always going to be different with little or no other campers. in saying that we had over 20 tents the previous weekend.
As you can see from the pitch-up listing, we are open in the tearoom & restaurant every day except Tuesdays (we have to keep a never changing check in window for lots of reasons & no we don't email as to how many are camping)
We are open until 10pm Thurs/Fri/Sat. on your weekend stay here I was in fact on site the whole time but locked up at 9pm as no one came down from the site. If you had come to the bar or wanted anything it would have been a pleasure to meet you. I did not go off site but Gerald and the team did obviously go and work a wedding hog roast. We always make sure that if any campers, even just one are here the place is never unattended in case of emergencies.
We do hope you would consider coming again as it is a lovely site with very obliging owners.
Pam.

Sloping pitch, burgers were nice but we were disappointed we couldn’t get any of the well advertised steaks

From the manager...

Good morning & thank you for your review. Sadly, the steaks had sold out prior to the bank holiday weekend which goes to show how fantastic they are. We are small producers so of course only a limited supply.
Did you get the chance of trying our tearoom & restaurant, including the bar with local cider & ale? A treat not to be missed.
I have just checked the pitch numbers for your group and yes slightly sloping but are the most requested for repeat visits as guests tend to position the tents so as to have fantastic uninterrupted views of the Coly valley.

Local attractions

Once you’ve met the animals on site, get set to say hi to some more furry pals at The Donkey Sanctuary (10 minutes’ drive) before greeting some rather more exotic beasts at Axe Valley Wildlife Park (20 minutes) and Yarak Birds of Prey (half an hour).

Trading countryside for coast is a fine idea for a day or two as well – it’ll take you around 15 minutes to drive down to Seaton or Sidmouth for beach days, paddles and strolls on the South West Coast Path. Lovely Lyme Regis (25 minutes) is another fab option – sign up for fishing trips here and you might be lucky enough to take home a fistful of mackerel for tea.

Got a bit more time to fill? How about a day of horse riding (five minutes), floral wanders at Burrow Farm Gardens (20 minutes) and Bicton Park Botanical Gardens (25 minutes) or a whole heap of outdoor rides, indoor soft play areas and shows at Crealy Theme Park (half an hour)? Lyme Bay Winery is 20 minutes away too, should you need a tipple to go with your evening barbecue…
