Welcombe X: Road through the pitches

General

  • Small family-run site near Welcombe, on the Devon/Cornwall border
  • Easily accessible from the A39 Atlantic Highway and next to a bus stop
  • Two miles from beaches and the South West Coast Path

Welcome to… Welcombe X. And get prepped to stay here for quite some time: have a quick gander of the pics to see just why.

Welcombe X is a small site near the village of Welcombe, on the border of Devon and Cornwall between Bideford and Bude, and two miles from the coast. It's a friendly and laidback place, lauded by grateful guests as 'perfect', 'lovely', 'fabulous' and 'very friendly and extremely helpful' among many more accolades… obvs you'll have to go and investigate for yourself…

And as for what do to along the coast? You could stretch your legs on the South West Coast Path or take to the waves in the surfing mecca of Bude… or trot up the cobbled streets at the old fishing village of Clovelly… or decide firmly to do nowt more than bask on as many splendid beaches as is humanly poss. A bus stop is outside the site if you've decided firmly not to do any driving while here.

The site has a peaceful rural atmosphere but is well connected, with direct access from the A39 Atlantic Highway. It's a five-minute walk to the village shop if you need to pick up groceries.

Fabulous little campsite with good sized pitches. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. All shared facilities were spotlessly clean and the shower rota system was a fantastic idea as we are still coming out of COVID restrictions.

    Disliked:

Pitches are right next to the A39. Not a problem if you are a heavy sleeper or have a good set of earplugs.

From the second we arrived we felt part of a very welcoming family. Nothing is too much for Ratty and Bob, any questions on where to visit, best beeches for dogs and in the case of our visit, the best vets! A relatively new site being developed with so much attention to detail, and being done so by a family of very experienced campers, meaning they know what people need. Their covid precautions are by far the best we have experienced, with everyone's safety covered, using a time slot system for the showers. Anti bacteria available for both toilet, shower, laundry and pot washing area. The whole family pitches in here, Ratty parents, and friends. They always have time for a chat and they all absolutely made our week..they never stopped working ensuring everyone was OK and had everything they needed. We had a lovely corner pitch (no5) opposite a new toilet block which was ideal. The weather was exceptionally hot so we didn't do much during the day trying to keep our dog as cool as possible but in the evenings we visited many of the beautiful beaches within a few minutes drive from the site. This is an ideal site to base yourself to explore the stunning area. Turning straight onto it from the A39 makes it the ideal place to begin your holiday adventures. We will most definitely be back and can't thank every single person we met to make this week's holiday most certainly one of the very best.

    Disliked:

Absolutely nothing to dislike. This is a developing site which like a good wine will mature with age.

This site is probably the best one we have ever stayed. The owners were very friendly and very helpful. I think we laughed from arriving to leaving. They also don't suffer fools gladly, which I rate very good as sometimes people just don't think about anyone else when holidaying. They have a variety of other things available to hire, with breakfast delivered every morning if wanted. The toilets and wash rooms are spotless too.
    All in all, well recommended

Local attractions

It's a mere two miles or five minute' drive from here to the nearest stretch of sand, the sandy, secluded and mighty peaceful beach at Welcombe Mouth.

The same distance will land you at the South West Coast Path for spectacularly scenic hikes around the entire Devon coast (and those of Cornwall, Doreset and Somerset, should you be so inclined). Take the path north to Clovelly or south to Bude, alongside your substantial picnic, and leave time afterwards for a potter around either town.

Kids' attractions and activities are all around, such as the The Milky Way adventure park 10 minutes' drive away at Bideford and famed and fab The Big Sheep amusement park is within 20 minutes' drive. Do also mosey along to the Gnome Reserve and Wild Flower Garden (15 minutes), set up as a 'pastoral refuge for garden gnomes'. Splendid.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (14.6 miles)
  • Tintagel Castle (22.3 miles)
