  • Secluded grass pitches on a working farm near Newport, Isle of Wight
  • A 10-minute drive to Thorness Bay beach; 25 minutes to Osborne
  • Tree-shaded wild camping meadow with compost toilets and running water
Near Newport on the Isle of Wight, Pigsty Farm is a start-up therapy farm designed to look after military veterans as well as disadvantaged children. Despite the site's name, you won't be sharing space with any pigs while you're here – although they can sometimes be seen sunning themselves happily on a neighbouring farm. The off-grid grass pitches are set in a large meadow, sheltered by mature trees and well away from the main road. It has a wild-camping vibe to it, with basic facilities stretching to running water at several points around the pitches as well as compost toilets. Guests have far-reaching views over farmland and Parkhurst Forest from the pitches, and there are strolls through the woodland to buzzy Newport (90 minutes’ walk) for groceries and all manner of provisions, as well as pubs and shops. Turn in the opposite direction along the same traffic-free footpath for Thorness Bay beach (45 minutes’ walk) and views of sailing boats in the Solent.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Lovely setting.

Disliked Aptly named. I really want to like this site. The owner is lovely but it is cluttered with old bits of stuff everywhere. The shower doesn’t drain well as others have said and this makes the floor very dirty. A weekend spent tidying up, could make it a goldmine!

From the manager: Thank you for your constructive comments, alway appreciated no matter how good or bad. First of all the shower has been fixed, our primary job is a working farm, so there will be some stuff around. After a very wet winter we are slowly recovering from the damaged that caused, hence stuff are slowly going with only 2 workers with both have secondary jobs to keep farm going.. I hope you had a lovely cycle.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Super chilled, friendly site. Loved waking up to sheep looking through the fence at me and the cows and pigs in the fields. Was walking the coastal path with my teenage son and camping along the way so this was a good location for us.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Nature, staff genuinely friendly.

Disliked Campsite on an incline which isn't ideam. Bigger problem seems to have been a lack of investment.

Composting toilets work well when you climb stairs and it is a giant bucket so other ppls poo is a long way away, these appear to be ground level not much bigger than buckets. There is only so much compromise I want to do for saving the world.

Shower suffers from drainage problems and isn't super clean, I really didn't want to end up standing in that murky water. The door also is impossible to clean from the inside...

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, thanks for your review. The compost toilets were from a German company specialising in this. The buckets were of proper size, understand you think it needs to be deeper, but we suffer from underground water hence they are higher. I will look into this and see what we can do! As for the shower door, I'm not sure what you mean.

Can't do much about the slope, we are a working farm and it is wild camping for only a short period of 2 months.

Thanks for your suggestions

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked This place was so quiet and peaceful. There are a couple of fields adjacent to a farm but with only a few other people staying here, so on some nights I had a whole field to myself. In spite of the rural location, it is only about 4 miles from Newport so a great place for touring around the island. Yes, the toilet and washing facilities were a bit limited but this was not a problem when there were very few other people with whom to have to share them and they allowed me to gain access to an electricity supply in one of the farm sheds for charging camera batteries, mobile phones etc. The site owners/managers were very friendly and helpful

Disliked May be they could put a larger sign outside the entrance as the place is easy to miss when driving past

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked Lots of spaces, some animals to look at in the fields alongside the campsite. Owners friendly and around to talk to. Quiet area

Disliked Where we were the ground had large ruts and holes which wasn’t ideal for the kids to play as I was afraid they would hurt themselves.

Also we paid £44 for two nights in a nt and there were motorbikes that we camped with that only paid £10 per night so felt a little off. That’s the only thing that would put me going back it the discrepancy in charging but the motorhomes booked directly with a the campsite rather than pitch up so would recommend going directly to starter than using pitch up tbh.

First and last time using pitch up. But I would consider rebooking with the campsite itself

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi, the motorhomes were a local Isle of Wight group who we try and encourage to stay, hence the price. This group supports local community interest companies and selected us this year as their favoured charity.

As for the cracks in the soil we have been under constant sun since Aprill, since we are a clay soil farm, the heat dries out the clay and creates hard cracks in the ground which is a real problem, completely the opposite in the winter where we have to wear wellies or sink in th clay! So, sorry about that, it is very frustrating for us as well. But it is wild camping

I appreciate this review and gives us an idea what if anything we could do about it!!

Tony
