  • Secluded grass pitches on a working farm near Newport, Isle of Wight
  • A 10-minute drive to Thorness Bay beach; 25 minutes to Osborne
  • Tree-shaded wild camping meadow with compost toilets and running water
Near Newport on the Isle of Wight, Pigsty Farm is a start-up therapy farm designed to look after military veterans as well as disadvantaged children. Despite the site's name, you won't be sharing space with any pigs while you're here – although they can sometimes be seen sunning themselves happily on a neighbouring farm. The off-grid grass pitches are set in a large meadow, sheltered by mature trees and well away from the main road. It has a wild-camping vibe to it, with basic facilities stretching to running water at several points around the pitches as well as compost toilets. Guests have far-reaching views over farmland and Parkhurst Forest from the pitches, and there are strolls through the woodland to buzzy Newport (90 minutes’ walk) for groceries and all manner of provisions, as well as pubs and shops. Turn in the opposite direction along the same traffic-free footpath for Thorness Bay beach (45 minutes’ walk) and views of sailing boats in the Solent.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Fantastic views

Disliked: Composting toilets very cramped and needs completely refurbished / rebuilt. Washing facilities are a disgrace, I know it wild camping but if its open to the public there still needs to be some privacy

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Last minute booking on a stormy weekend. Met up with the owner as he was leaving site and was very helpful and kindly offered extra shelter if needed. Good quiet spot - all I needed for a wild camping experience. Toilets well maintained. The site is sloped so I think there are only a few places where a good pitch is possible. However no issues for me as there was only one other camper! Highly recommended, as long as you know what you’re doing/ aware it’s more leaning to the wild camping crowd. Will be booking again when in the IOW.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: It was such an amazing site, the scene were so beautiful. At the far side of the field is a woodland with a lake and it was so fun to explore. The pigs that were at the top of the field were so adorable and the owner gave us food to feed them. We were the only people camping so we had the whole site to ourselves and honestly it was so perfect. The facilities were minimal but it’s proper camping so what was expected.

Disliked: There’s limited spaces around the field that isn’t sloped and where it is flat, the ground is bumpy so make sure to bring something soft to sleep on. We slept on the ground but it’s was absolutely fine for us. The toilet situation was not as bad as we were expecting. There were two toilets in little sheds. If you don’t like proper camping especially when it comes to toilets potentially look elsewhere but honestly for the 7 of us it was not bad at all.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Really peaceful, secluded and welcoming site - they even left us a couple of plastic chairs undercover when it rained. The compost toilets were kept really clean and there’s a sink for washing up.

Disliked: There wasn’t a shower on site which was listed on Pitch up.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: The hosts were really welcoming and generous. They helped us out with any issues we had, even going as far to give us a lift into town. Toilets were easy to use and well-kept. Ground was level and relatively soft as well. Would absolutely come back here.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Easy bike ride to and from Isle of Wight festival, requires very good flashing bike lights due to darkness on route back.

Disliked: If you want luxury camping then this site isn’t for you. Toilets are clean and cleaned regular but if you want a modern functioning loo then you might want to pass on this time.
