Andark Lake: The grass pitch

General

  • Peaceful site near the River Hamble: two pubs within walking distance
  • Six miles from Southampton and 12 from Portsmouth's ferry terminal
  • Set in scuba diving and open-water swimming lake grounds

Get set to get wet… with the Solent coast a couple of miles away, the Hamble river down the road and of course the lake on site, it’s safe to say that life pretty much revolves around the water at Andark Lake, a small and quiet grassy site six miles from the centre of Southampton.

The main focal point here is the purpose-built scuba diving training lake, where wetsuit-clad types can sign up for training courses and recreational dives, hire kit and fill air tanks. Open-water swims can be had for an extra charge at the weekends, when staff are on site and the place isn't in use by divers. Outside of swim time, there’s more water-based activity (sailing, paddleboarding, kitesurfing and windsurfing) along the riverside or at Swanwick Marina.

Should all this aquatic activity have worked up a bit of a hunger, trot over to the site café for snacks and light lunches, plus hot and cold drinks throughout the day. For your evening meals, three pubs are within walking distance, or you can pick up supermarket supplies two miles away for a sunset sausage sizzle.

Other amenities on site include a drinking water tap and a toilet block with male and female changing rooms, lockers and showers, all open 24/7. A coldwater sink is available in the pitching field where guests can wash pots and pans, and an accessible toilet is available on request.

Please note

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Lake open-water swimming is not included in the rate and is charged at £7 per person for a day ticket . Swimming is only available Wednesday to Sunday.

No swimming while divers are in the lake. The lake must not be used after hours or when no staff are on site, as it's a deep diving training lake and can be dangerous.

Dogs are not allowed in the lake at any time.

For me it was a perfect location between Portsmouth and Southampton. 5min walk to pubs and food. Short drive to supermarkets. 5min walk also to the sea and marinas. The site was well looked after, attentive and friendly staff and everything you need during your stay such as food, hot drinks etc….WI-FI was reachable from my pitch and was plenty fast enough.

    Disliked:

To management, just a recommendation….a light sensor above the showers in block as when starting to get dark the only sensor is as you walk into changing rooms, which switches lights on, but once in showers they went off and will pick up movement from shower location therefore showered in the dark and had to find my way to door way to trigger the lights once more.

Andark is a peaceful site with nice facilities, the loo blocks were clean and modern and also not moon miles away in the middle of the night. The Café looked pleasant though we did not make use of it. The pitch size is good and doesn't have any hidden extras such as charges for gazebos. The staff we met were all very pleasant but also very hands off, which is nice compared to come sites where your every move is monitored!
There are several pubs within close walking distance, we especially liked The Bold Forester. There are also some lovely beaches within short driving distance.

    Disliked:

It was a shame that the lake was very expensive for an hours swim, though it is discounted to £5 for campers, that is still more than it costs to swim at a leisure centre. I understand that the site is primarily aimed at diving, so while we found it prohibitive, I am cognisant of the fact that they will have to maintain aspects of it in order to run their training facility, hence there being a charge, but a further reduced price, say £2 per person, would have led us to stay and use the lake, and probably the cafe, rather than seeking out alternatives.

My biggest (not insurmountable) grumble would be the lack of hot water for pan washing. That said it would not deter me from returning.

We had just gotten off an evening ferry so it was great being able to arrive so late. Nice lake and cafe.

    Disliked:

Our pitch was tiny - really not a pitch at all. Seemed to be more of a car park with a tiny grass verge. Which is a shame as it could have been lovely spot overlooking the lake. We only have a VW so not a big camper but we still couldn’t pitch our awning (which we use for extra sleeping space) we asked to move but unfortunately no pitches available so we decided to move on 😢
